Focal points cannot compete but must guide you through space. Depending on your open space, perhaps choosing one focal point is enough, or depending on the visuals, it may be that two works better. :)
Oh my gosh this is exactly how my house is! As soon as you walk in there’s the dining and living room in one- there is no entry foyer or anything . Also my house has so many windows so her suggestion that a bed should be the focal point as soon as you walk in the bedroom doesn’t work because right in front of the door there’s a huge wall of windows. Can’t put a bed there.
You are so great at explaining everything I cant believe how important interior design is. my room felt bare bones and after watching your video's I finally did something about it and made some changes, upgraded my room with a few things. Cheers!😀

When ceiling is a focus wall, which material would you use as good alternates to real wood in a wooden ceiling? Is plywood with laminate better than engineered wood( wooden floor material used in ceiling instead!).

Question - what do you do when your living room has a natural but unattractive focal point that you can't change? For example, in my living room the fireplace area is central, dark, heavy and unattractive. The rest of the room is light and white. (I'm a renter so I can't make any structural changes or paint the fireplace area.) Can I try to create a focal point that I find beautiful or will it just compete with the fireplace in an unsuccessful way?

I have built in shelving and tv unit right next to a fireplace. Any thoughts? We use the room mostly for tv watching but the fireplace is also beautiful with a marble surround. I own an apartment which has got living room and kitchen in one place. Its an open kitchen. Moreoever dining table is in the living space. I tried to keep things in neutral color with few colour pops which goes with the theme, yet i ended up with an unsatisfactory result. I never find what im looking for or what suits my place.
