    I love the dark behind the TV in order to disguise it somewhat. The dark blue wall paper is amazing, I'm doing that! Your confession about TV makes me love you even more Julie K!! Hubby heard you and was like "ooh ask her how much that will cost" when you mentioned built ins. I laughed and said "honey! We can't afford her but we can still learn from her" thanks for being a good teacher! xoxo

      Haha custom built-ins depend on the material and how complex it is of course Esther! Start saving some looks and get bids from local fabricators. I love using Yelp to find carpenters and millwork vendors 👍🏻☺️

    Thanks for this guidance, right on time! I have an open concept living room/dining space and the TV is the focal point. I have moved my chaise sofa every possible way. I keep thinking about the placement of the sofa and TV, so everyone can see and I need to get key furniture pieces, but not overcrowd the space. But, with grandkids , I like the idea of making a second area for lounging etc... while keeping an eye on everyone.
    I recently found your channel and I love your style and videos!

      Not everyone needs to view the TV Lisa. You won’t be able to create a conversational seating group this way. Some will stay glued to their iPads and phones so you’re free to design away! 😂

We are postponing to buy the TV for our new house as long as possible (not a fan! :)) but we were ready and we painted the wall black where the TV will (potentially) go. Very useful video, Julie! Thank you!
    I have an open plan in my flat: sitting area, dining area and kitchen. What I did, since I live alone, was create a TV corner. I have a buffet table w a 50” TV and a 1,5 person sofa that opens as a chaise longue and single bed; also a side table with a lamp, coaster for a drink, vase w natural dry roses and a photo of my family when I was little. It is the coziest spot, and the best thing is there is no TV in the sitting area.

    I'm so excited about the options shown, especially the dark wall/book shelf ideas. I've been thinking about it, and I think it will work for our space perfectly. We just built a new home with a gorgeous corner, floor to ceiling stacked stone fireplace, and the main wall beside it will be the media wall, with the furniture grouping centered around it. I'm thinking I'll paint or wallpaper it black until I figure out some built in shelving. I will never, ever understand a TV over a fireplace. We're spending way too much money on that gorgeous stone. Some people think a corner fireplaceb is awkward, but it's the perfect solution for being able to center the TV for viewing.

    Very good advice. I have placed TVs in almost all my rooms too. We live in such a different age. The tv provides more than just programmed formats. You can cast from your phone put art work on it or even blend it into the wall like the Samsung Frame tv. It’s no longer an eyesore. I like having art on my frame tv so it doesn’t look like a black rectangle on a white wall. Sectionals are key but I did not think about a corner chair. Good idea!

    I have my TV over the fireplace and it’s great. It’s a little high, but I’m willing to get a crook in my neck for the perfect focal point/aesthetics. 🤣🤣🤣 I have a great view of my great room TV from the kitchen, which is great when looking at cooking demos. Other than that, we don’t really look at that TV.

    Hi Julie! Your videos are so nice I watch them even if they are irrelevant to me sometimes lol. I live in a tiny 1-bedroom condo, so media rooms sound like a dream. I do, however, have a couple of questions that I'll be grateful if you could answer...
    1) Would you ever consider putting dark furniture on dark flooring? I have dark wood flooring but have fallen in love with a gorgeous dark walnut desk that gives a mid-century feel. In a small square living room, I want to place this on the wall opposite my small sectional so that when guests are over, I can remove my laptop and place a nice lamp/vase to make it function like a console. Would it work if I only place a rectangular rug under the sectional, but don't have a rug under the desk to break the matchy-matchy feel?
    2) Or would you suggest I get a big square rug to put the front legs of both the sectional and the desk on it?
    I know this is such a long, painful read haha, but if you could reply with your suggestions it'll mean a lot to me! Thanks! x

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  Před 2 lety +1

    Thank you very much. I watch your videos and I learn so much about creating a functional space. I built my own house based on an open concept. After reviewing my space I noted that my living room space is smaller than I thought. The seating is about 7 feet away from the TV. In my open concept have a L shaped kitchen and a four-seater island and in my living room I am planning to place a 3 seater a two seaator and two accent chairs aa individual seating so people can enjoy the view outside. My space is 25 feet wide and 24 feet long..is it okay to have auxh a amall living room space where the tv ia juat 5 to7 feet away fdom the sofa?

    Hi Julie, I started following you recently and I’m already in love with your work. I will be moving to a new house in the summer and this time I’m making sure I decorate well. I will be bringing my current furniture with me so it won’t be super easy to decorate since I have stuff that probably isn’t great will it will have to do. In the new house there is a large corner that doesn’t have a purpose yet and I’m thinking of installing a fireplace. My concern is that the furniture will not be facing the fireplace since there is a tv in the living room that all furniture will be facing. Is that ok?

      Thank you for watching Shawnnie! Make sure the seat height matches your dining chairs (usually 18”-20” high), no arms so it’s easy to get in and out of, the length should mirror how many people sit across from it. For instance, I can seat 3-4 ppl on the long side of the dining table, so the sofa should fit the same amount. Hope that helps! 🙏🏻☺️

    The problem is that the televisions are engineered to be watched at eyesight level. This is why so many people complain about a murky picture in dark scenes. The center of the television should always be at eye level for maximum performance. Which is usually roughly 40 inches off the floor, for most sofas - If your seating is elevated, as with bar stools or on a platform, cinema style, then it can be raised.
    At 60-65" to see the picture clearly you will need to stand, be on a bar stool, or aggressively angle the television, to see the screen clearly, and unless it's in a cabinet where it's not obvious, it will look strange.

    • @neksraven
      @neksraven Před 2 lety

      I first became aware of people doing this during Game of Thrones, when a friend of mine had bought a giant LED screen worth $2700K to watch it, and I was still using my old LCD from 2005, and I could see the whole thing perfectly.
      I told him to go get the bar stools and watch it, and he could see the Battle of The Bastards just fine.
      Newer screens have a lot of leeway from side to side, but the light still emits most efficiently straight and forward.

    • @neksraven
      @neksraven Před 2 lety

      To get around this engineering problem, you can always get a short throw projector, which is a lot more forgiving, and then you also don't have to design around a big black box, you can use a hideaway screen, or paint the wall with a reflective paint....

    I’ve watched several times as well as most of your videos. When your main focal point is tv, mounting above lower cabinet, when the only other wall space in the room is above sectional is it okay to mount an electric fireplace above the sectional as your only art (and function)? The other side of sectional has windows and door and the 4th side is an open kitchen only 30” away from oversized sectional, this is the only space other than bedroom and bath, so how do I fit the fireplace in? The sectional takes up most of the room at 11’ long, deep, super comfy and sparks hoy in a plush fabric, it can also allow for guest sleep over if needed.

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  Před 2 lety

      Hi Brenda- I answered your question in a previous thread. That’s not the place I would put your focal point. Best if the sectional flanks the windows and faces the fireplace to fully enjoy it. But it’s your space, your design intent. Do what makes sense to you.

    I still think some of those TVs are too high. The ideal height should be somewhere in the range of your eye height while seated, in line with the center or lower half should be fine. Some people might need a shorter console than what was suggested for this. Some examples of good heights shown don't fit this, some even being completely above head height which is a big no-no for TV nerds. Granted this is probably dipping towards function over form a lot more than the video intends, but thought it was worth highlighting. If you think your TV is too low after watching this video, then you might be alright.
