The "Frankenstein" 286 repairing episode 1: it's ALIVE!

  • Several months ago my father bought an AST premium 286 from Chinese Ebay. It arrived with a generic AT motherboard and a horrifying burn mark in the chassis. I decided to take this chance, buy a bunch of original AST parts for the premium 286, and try to restore this PC to its former flory.

    Wikid Awesome! My first computer was a Packard Bell 286. Commander Keen 1... KEEN1.exe was my first and still my favorite video game

    Wow! I never seen a motherboard without ram sockets, didn't know it was possible for the cpu to access ram and load the bios through the isa bus :D

      Yes ! Most early PCs (XT and 5150) where expanded via that same bus to as much as a full Megabyte of RAM. You might want to look up the S-100 bus as well, since I suspect that was a influence.

    12:00 hasn't that always been how they did it in PCs? looks a little weird when swapping parts since it's not really an error then but in normal operation if size changes due to chip failure it would be

    i ended up with this ast motherboard, but i cant see sending the money for the memory board.

      The motherboard is pretty useless without the memory card, so why did you but it in the first place?

      @@andyhu9542 I basically bought a bunch of boards at once, 486, 386, slot 1 and didnt know what was other than being a 286 board. Its not too big deal as i also found another 286 with built in 1024 kb later.
