I love how Buckley and his ilk necessarily removes the violence from its context. Yes, the Nazis did horrible things and so did the Vietcong, does that mean they are straight up the same or can we look at how one of these was a highly industrialized nation pursuing an imperialist, eugenicist project of industrialized genocide and conquest whereas the other was a rebel group in their own occupied lands that were fighting for self-determination, and maybe draw upon some kind of nuance from that? According to Buckley et al, we cannot, since the smallest action of resistance that does not fall perfectly in line with a utopian path of pacifism is outright delegitimizing - a standard that is magically never applied to the US, Israel, or other friends of western capital.

In one of Buckley’s biographies, he admitted he *cried when his brothers burned a cross on the lawn of a Jewish organisation* because his parents wouldn’t let him go help them because he was too young. This is the man trying to use dead Jewish people to downplay the liberation of the Vietnamese against American occupation and attempted genocide.
What always gets forgotten is that before this moment and during this moment the US had already reconstituted Nazis, fascists and imperial Japanese politicians into power, they were using Nazi stormtroopers to overthrow governments, do terrorism, suppress rebellions and protect mineral assets in the Congo and Buckley 100% would support all of that.
What gets lost is that leading up to this the US had reconstituted fascists into power in Germany, Italy and Japan, it was using ex fascist storm troopers to do counter insurgency (a lot of methods later used were taught by fascists) protect mineral assets, over throw governments, do terrorism and lead rebellions against communist bloc countries, etc. Buckley 100% would have supported all of that.

Buckley's show reminds me a bit of Piers Morgan but more extreme: a right-winger having "uncensored" opinions on his show. The difference being that Chomsky is definitely more radical than Hasan (who endorses parliamentary politics and adjusts rhetoric to the audience) and was considered as such at the time by the establishment. Buckley was even more right-wing than Piers is but he still had him on. And yet it is still more difficult for lefties like Hasan to get on talkshows today than someone like Noam back then. It's really only the vindication of Vietnam that gets Noam a spot to talk now but he can't chime in on mainstream media as often as he could in the past and neither can anyone on the left except maybe Yanis Varoufakis - and that's only because he was fucking finance minister! But it just goes to show the speed and intensity of monopolisation happening in media. Socialism is criticised for this and yet it's Capitalism that tends towards monopolisation and unity of "opinion."
Yes, the way Buckley was talking about Germany, as if they hadn't done any violence/torture, prior to Normandy ... like wtf? No. Much like Piers acting as if the issue with Israel-Palestine began on Oct 7.
Part of Buckley's mission was to take big-C American Conservatism away from violent shlt-heels and inbred racists of the segregated South and bestow it a veneer of intellectualism. He was very embarrassed by its association with such brutality and stupidity.
Of course, American Conservatism has recently come to absolute power via the SCOTUS. It has utterly abandoned these pretensions; completely surrendering to the darkest imaginings of its adherents' collective Id. There's no reason to hide it anymore. No conservative ever talks about William F Buckley, Jr. (Except maybe on the editorial pages of the NYT.) They would judge him as swishy and effete, at best.
Buckley was definitely going for more of an “academic” angle - he published a journal for conservative writers and tried to carry himself as an erudite intellectual. Morgan is just a trash tv host who tries to spin outrage into ratings (and also he tries to portray himself as more of an “enlightened centrist”)
Just need to remind everyone.... James Baldwin legit dogwalked William F Buckley better than any Westminister vet - - love rewatching that clip every Juneteenth.

😮😮😮
Under no circumstances do you have to hand it to the Nazis, ever. The instant Buckley tried to bring them up as if they were a good parallel, he made the grave mistake of standing with them. That's a group nobody should have problems condemning, and even playing devil's advocate opens the question of why you'd attempt to give them credit, or tolerate them, especially if you're debating a Jewish man who you cut off at every opportunity in a desperate attempt to stop him from speaking.
It's esp gross when you think of how much closer in time they were to the events, too. Most people alive today don't remember the rise & plunge into WW2 as a time they lived thru. Most people watching that broadcast when it aired would absolutely remember, if not directly themselves, certainly they knew people who had been directly touched by WW2. & at that point, the footage of the camps had been widely reported on, at least the camps the Americans liberated, after the war.
So Buckley's saying that to a Jewish man who very likely personally knows victims of the Nazi regime, on top of the rest of the ugliness on display. Buckley's got this veneer of gentility but he's def being provocative here bc there's no way he wouldn't know this, & he's specifically wielding that here.

there were SEVERAL American vets who came back from Vietnam (while the conflict was going on) and spoke out against the war.
