I agree that the US did not want the hassle of taking on Assange in an election year and instructed the UK on the decision. Assange is doing really poorly in Belmarsh and of course an appeal will take more time. The US is hoping that Assange will not last too much longer, and the "problem" will be gone without the US loosing face. We should be demanding his immediate release and the Australian gov. also, must do more! So far only RFK is speaking about dropping charges.

Anyone care to discuss why....how....the US has jurisdiction to try Julian Assange in the first place? You speak so casually about whether or not he violated US law. My question is, how does the United States have any right to try a foreign publisher operating outside the US FOR ANYTHING??? Are we merely acquiescing to the idea that the US can try anyone, anywhere in the world for violating US law? The fact that no one in the media has even bothered to raise the question, tells me that the answer is a resounding "yes".

Assange is being politically persecuted for doing his job as a journalist.
So, Assange is not a US citizen and not a US national. Assange is an Australian citizen. To the best of my knowledge, WikiLeaks was founded in Iceland.
So why would United States Law apply to someone not living in the USA who is not a citizen or national of the USA for a business they founded in a country that is not the USA where that person journalistically wrote about leaked information provided to him by a whistle blower about unethical and illegal activities the USA was performing?
This is an extremely grotesque abuse of power by the USA against a journalists doing what a journalist should do when a whistle blower presents them with information about a government committing unethical an criminal acts.
Or is there something I am missing here?
