Reportage Sketching - 'Unfolding Stories' with Lynne Chapman

  • A unique and fascinating sketching project: Lynne Chapman spent 10 months as a fly-on-the-wall with a team of sociologists at the University of Manchester. The 44 concertina sketchbooks she created are woven with intricate, painted stories of her experiences, all of them created entirely on location.
"In October 2015, I began sketching a year-in-the-life of The Morgan Centre for Research into Everyday Lives. I was given the freedom to draw pretty much anything - following individual academics on research interviews; poking around in professors’ desk drawers; ear-wigging students’ conversations in the refectory… I recorded it all in a series of 2 metre long sketchbooks, which were exhibited to celebrate the Morgan Centre’s 10th anniversary."
The residency was also interactive: a dozen academics, most of whom had no drawing experience, volunteered to keep sketchbooks throughout the year. To help empower them, Lynne ran workshops and SketchCrawls. She also passed chain-sketchbooks round the department, using the concertina format, to mirror her own work.

Thanks so much folks. I'm so pleased with the wonderful job the film maker Howard Warmsley made of the project. There were so many threads to tie together, but he made it seamless. You can see more of the sketchbooks on my new website if you are interested to get a closer look: www.lynnechapmanurbansketching.co.uk/projects/

A great video, Lynne! I love the celebration of ordinary and extraordinary things. Lots to talk about and maybe act upon in Beijing. Bring your sketch book!

I absolutely love this! The idea of it is wonderful. To see snapshots of everyday life through different perspectives is beautiful. In fact, I think I may pick up a watercolor sketch book specifically for capturing the everyday. I have always loved to draw and paint but until now have not had the chance to expand that. My children are getting older and I am gaining more free time. My hopes are to grow my artistic ability and maybe branch into so editorial illustration work. You are so very helpful and inspirational. Thank you for sharing!

This is so interesting. Thank you for sharing. I remember reading about your project some months ago. I'm still interested in sketching some special things that are tucked away... almost forgotten.... maybe to be brought back to mind through a sketch.
