Forgotten Memories
Forgotten Memories is a piece of hand-stitched, textile artwork that I created in 2022, to express the way I feel about not being able to access so much of my personal history, as a result of having Aphantasia.
The piece comprises 144 incidents from an old diary of mine, events that I had since forgotten. Each has been hand-embroidered onto organza and then coiled up, so it returns to its previous inaccessibility, while teasing us with the knowledge that there is something there, which we can't quite get at.
This parallels my inability to access past events from my life: a common issue for aphantasics because, without a mind's eye to allow them to reinforce memories visually, they slip away more quickly and more completely than is usual.

Lynne Chapman: a Life Just Out of Sight
zhlédnutí 686Před 10 měsíci
Textile fine artist Lynne Chapman talks candidly about recent projects which explore her relationship with the symptoms of Aphantasia (having no mind’s eye). The film focusses particularly upon Erosion, the 'ruby memory dress' which deals with the severe autobiographical memory-loss often associated with Aphantasia. The film considers how an obsession with recording her life experience in sketc...
Urban Stitching - test piece for a brand new project idea!
zhlédnutí 195Před rokem
A sneak preview of a new idea I've been testing. I am working on a continuous, linear piece of textile artwork, created in the streets, hand-stitching while I'm walking a spiral route. I've been making one stitch per step, recording interactions with the people I meet, plus adding different elements to record the nature of my surroundings and the weather conditions, as I move through them. Ever...

'Wearable Art' from plastic waste: Art Hat no 7

This is another in the series of Art hats I have been creating from all different kinds of single-use waste plastics which I collect from my own use and from my neighbours. The work is a statement about the outrageous amounts of these materials that pass though our hands and the environmental impact of so much plastic. However, I wanted to make joyful artwork, despite the alarming nature of the...

In Autumn 2019, I was invited to create a 4m x 1.5m suspended installation for the entrance to York Racecourse, for the Art& exhibition. 'Woe Betide Us' was the result, using heat-treated plastic bags, hand-stitched together to make a gigantic plastic quilt, which was draped over bolsters made from large plastic water bottles, to create a wave of plastic waste. The spiky pieces suspended beside...

This is the 5th Art Hat that Lynne has made from different forms of domestic waste plastic. This time, she asked people to send her cheap plastic toys, the kind of thing that is given away with fast food, or comes out of Christmas crackers, then almost immediately ends up in our bins. Her waste plastic work is a way of drawing attention to single-use plastics, while simultaneously 'locking' the...

I also can’t picture faces in my head, come to think of it. I have occasionally wondered how anyone can describe the appearance of a person to the police, for example! Perhaps I need to look into this for myself.

This is a great video that explains Aphantasia so well. Sadly when trying to recall someone or a place I see nothing at all. Not even for a second. I have lived my life relying totally on memory and assumed it was the same for everybody. It’s only now (as an artist) I feel I was cheated of an important tool in my life. Though I have to say you have managed extremely well, even with Aphantasia.

Glad you enjoyed the film. I feel the same - a bit as though I have had one arm tied behind my back all my life as an artist and have only recently realised. The up-side is that you live in the moment, which makes me a fairly happy person I think.

Did you do a video about adding colour? How long did it take you to create each page?I have written several children’s books and I am searching for illustrators but as I am a novice at this I am Ill-equipped to guide them. What computer program did you use to manipulate the images? Do you ever cut and paste your drawings from one to the next to conserve time? How large a scanner do you use and at what resolution?

Lynn Chapman, I noticed you have the line art done on white paper. Once you moved onto the pink pastel paper, did you draw the same line art onto the pink paper with pencil before you started colouring in or did you go into colouring with pastels free-hand? Thanks for sharing your process with us. Your work is very expressive, fun and beautiful.

How do you transfer your drawings into your books . And also what’s the easiest way to add color ? Im so happy I found this video - great to see people still happy to give advice without getting paid for it. Very useful video, thank you for sharing! I have a question regarding the process of getting your drawings into finished book. my plan: use line-drawings & watercolour to make my scetches -> scan them high resolution -> upload my digital scanned files to Adobe Indesign, where I will create the whole book. My question is if I need to use a profesional firm to scan my pictures, or do you think using a normal home-scanner will be sufficient, with the many features adobe ( creative cloud) have included? Are you adding your colours in Adobe inDesign or is that the designers job? Trying to figure if I should add watercolour to my sketches or add all colours in photoshoop. I will be doing everything myself :) Thank you so much again, & looking forward to hear from u!

      @LynneChapmanArtist Před 2 lety

It varies a little, but the final artwork is always larger than the book size, because pastels are easiest to work with when things are not too fiddly. A double page spread is something close to A2 size. If you look at my video Creating an Illustration in Pastels, you can see me working on a smaller piece, but also see a finished spread on my desk, which gives you an idea.
