- Illustrator Lynne Chapman shows sheets of her original sketches and explains how she creates different animal personalities, bringing them to life as picture book characters. Using the drawings of the various animals from her book Jungle Grumble, she shows how photographic reference helps to identify key features and talks you through subtle ways to adjust facial proportions to suggest different character types.
Jungle Grumble, written by Julia Jarman, is published by Piccadilly Press.

Lovely work! Also, amazing insights. I am currently working on a project and taking notes. Thank you! Debbie sends regards!
Lynne, I love how animated you become, when talking about your work. It's genuinely refreshing! It makes me even more passionate about making a move towards illustration (and away from graphic design). Thank you.
Thank you. That's such lovely feedback and I'm so sorry for the crazy delay in answering your comment. I have trouble with notifications, so only just saw it.
Lynne! This video helped me so much! I'm developing characters (human and animal) for books. But since I tend to draw realistically, I was having a hard time switching to a simpler style. Watching you, with the photos, helped me see how I can make the characters more simple and fun! Thank you so much for sharing! ♥

Thanks for sharing your expertise. I am also a Chapman but in California and also an artist wanting to get into making children's books.

Absolutely love this video. I want to become a children’s book illustrator myself . I love drawing and my sister would love if I could use my drawing for her books . How do you transfer your drawings into your books . And also what’s the easiest way to add color ? I’ve seen you color some of your characters in the past using pastels, but is there a way to add color to them digitally?
So good, i love your illustrations !

You are so cute! Love your work! Thank you for making these videos!!!
Learn from you
Hi Lynne,
Great video. Thank you for sharing. How much time did you devote to the "character" creation portion of the project?
Your work is lovely! Do you have any suggestions on learning how to draw characters from different angles, perspective, facial expressions, while being cohesive through an entire picture book? I've only ever done one offs and it's so challenging to try to figure out how to create a character that I can reproduce in a consistent way.
Lynne I have just come across your channel and I'm loving your videos. A lifetime dream of mine is to create and illustrate a children's book. Do you have any advice for a beginner. I wouldn't have a clue where to start in creating a book
Hi Lindsey. I am SO sorry not to have picked up your question earlier.
Illustrating picture books is great fun, but it is an incredibly hard field to break into and there are no easy ways to go about it. So one answer is just to do it for your own pleasure, rather than try to go professional. However, if you do want to give it a go, the key is to draw and draw and draw. You have to be able to draw characters, animals and people, really well. I have written several blog posts to help people get a folio together and find a publisher, which you can see link to here:
www.lynnechapman.co.uk/learning-resources/my-hot-tips/
I have also created a class with Craftsy, on how to draw expressive picture book characters, which you can find here: www.craftsy.com/drawing/classes/expressive-picture-book-characters/45923
Good luck!
Cool video, thanks. It would be nice to be able to watch all your videos in 720p or 1080p (more pleasant for the eyes).
Do you give any private (children book illustration) course ? (i live in uk, near Winsor/Slough/Gerrards Cross)

About children books...
If someone is author & illustrator and created a complete dummy book, should this person send his "actual work" or "a copy of it" or "samples" to the publisher ?
Barely can understand what she says
I'm sorry about that. The sounds plays okay on my computer. I'm so sorry for the crazy delay in answering your comment. I have trouble with notifications, so only just saw it.
