One of my first jobs was in a body shop. We were working on an avocado green 1969 Chrysler 300 and it was missing a couple of letters from each side. We were able to move the lettering around and fully spell “THREE HUNDRED” on one side. The other side ended up as “THE HUDRE”. Funny, fifty years later!
I don’t remember ever seeing a Newport or a 300 convertible in person. I’m old enough that I remember when these were introduced. I was 12 years old and a hopeless car nut! I have lived in Wisconsin my entire life. Maybe if had grown up in SoCal or Florida it would be different.
In the early 1970s, I recall that there was a gorgeous red 1969 300 convertible with the famous road wheels, usually parked along my walk to elementary school. More than half a century later, it stands out because I believe that only the 1969 model year had "THREE HUNDRED" spelled out along the rear quarter panels. I grew up in Montreal in an equally (if not more so) hostile climate as Wisconsin. Sadly, it only took a few winters for the road salt to turn the most beautiful cars (well, the ugly ones too) into rot boxes.
