@@bobfredwhatever3384 oh no. i got one detail wrong about a game i haven't played in a good 10 years. i'm a monster. and you aren't wrong, you can dive REAL deep into that game. There's a lot there.
Let's just say, if my wife went missing in south Louisiana, I wouldn't have far to travel. Also, some of the swamps and mangroves in south Louisiana ARE that remote, even with gps and whatnot.
I plan to do it as I have a lot to say about that game, but I'm hoping my RE vids will get more traffic before I do. They're a bit sparse at the moment!
Personally, I found the big increase in the player's power at the end complementary as it was the fulfillment of that string of hope the game had dangled throughout the first 85% of the game. Relative to the start, you are OP by the end and it is cathartic to tear apart those swamp monsters with ease that used to be frightening; you feel like Ethan evolves to the badass he needed to be.
This game is more than just well timed jump scares, I played it in vr a d for 3 nights after that first day I had nightmares about Mia, and I never have nightmares. It gets in your head man...especially in VR, I can't imagine playing it any other way
stand out moments for me was the fun house area (and how to beat it) , and the section near the start where you find all puzzle pieces for a secret door and ethan says 'who the fuck makes these things' , nice bit of self awareness form teh devs xd
I completely agree with you about the sudden Michael Bay tone change near the end. However I could help but enjoy it. Something about when Mia says "Now go kill that bitch" just made me feel like enough is enough. It's time to load up on all your weapons and supplies and just go to town on these bastards. The tonal shift is definitely noticeable, but personally I found quite satisfying.
Great video! My favourite game of all time. It's good to see how much your production quality improved over the years, but it was already really good at this point.
how can someone sound so different after already reaching adulthood with only a 5year time difference? You really upped the audio quality and testosterone levels throughout the years
My absolute favorite game in the series. It's just familiar enough to be recognized, but so new and unique. The music, the atmosphere, the controls. This game is a masterpiece. I have played it over and over. This is the first game in the franchise since the first one where I felt actually scared. There were times I had to stop the game and just take a minute. If I had to choose 2 top games, The Evil WIthin and RE7 would be those 2 games.
I was so impressed when I find out that there is variety in seemingly scripted scenes in this game. You could lose a leg as a tutorial, and I've never encountered it because I played well enough. And that scene in garage has quite a bit of different outcomes too depending on how you tackle it - it's like a high pressure point-and-click game. Garage fight is absolutely brilliant game design.
Finally bought this game this past year with a 20 dollar PSN card that I got for my 41st birthday... and it's fucking BRILLIANT. Now... I am a fan of RE since the beginning. I even enjoy playing RE5 and 6... a lot. Even with all the changes from what the games used to be taken into consideration. I especially like Leon's campaign in 6. All that said, RE Biohazard is the first game in a VERY long time that actually succeeded in immersing me into a world of tension, horror, and fear. Definitely gave me Resident Evil and RE2 vibes. Even the DLC content, like Chris' mini campaign, The End of Zoe, Banned Footage, and the rest are top notch. This is one of the best games I have ever played... forget horror... It may be the best, most immersive video game I have ever played . Well done, Capcom.
I know I'm late to the party, but the limb reattaching has to do with the heavy implication that Ethan is infected. In fact if Jack hacks your leg off in his first encounter he will pretty much show you that can happen. Ethan will even ask what the fuck when it happens
I gotta say, the Resident Evil series has blown me away, the past 4 months I've played RE4, RE7 and REmake 2. They're all 3 completely different seeming games, but I almost enjoyed them all equally as much. I hope you make a retrospective of Resident Evil 2 Remake as well because I'd love to see what you think of it.
I think the brightness here is too high. It recommends in the game options to have the brightness setting quite low. I think it makes it a creepier experience.
Sir Joey The White :) So you've had a Resident Evil binge then, I've played all the games u mentioned and RE5, the RE remake on Nintendo GameCube and loved them all! RE4 is in my top 20 best games ever played i still remember buying my monthly gaming magazine reading about it getting hyped and boy was I not disappointed! I only played RE2 remake about 2 months ago for the first time and Capcom have got a great engine with RE Engine haven't they, it's impressive! I got so familiar with the police station I loved that! Some linearity isn't a bad thing all the time! I ended up getting the platinum trophy so was pleased, now I'm hyped for RE3...another RE that will be new to me :)
Realistically speaking who you gonna choose, your wife or a stranger? Sure you as the player may not have gotten to know either of them well, but the choice for the character himself should be obvious
Especially for a southern cutie. Your ‘wife’ was a liar and kept things from you , and gets possessed occasionally and tries to kill you. The choice isn’t really that obvious .
Part of the reason for the long reattachment thing is that you're infected and are becoming just as durable as Jack on your own way. That's how your forearm gets reattached (well, plus staples), as well as the leg cutscene. It's also why you start seeing Evelyn everywhere towards the end and why you see Zoe and Jack in the dream sequence when you're captured (little bit of fridge brilliance foreshadowing that they're both still alive and under Evie's hive mind despite their apparent deaths). Anyway, I otherwise agree with your review.
As for the choice of which Waifu you take home with you one of them you already have a better chance of sleeping with (your wife, who is also a secret agent which is kinda cool) or the other girl who while she is cuter and hasn’t used a chainsaw to chop off your hand is just a random stranger. But you did promise you’d take her with you and it’s thanks to her help that you survived in the first place(no thanks to your supposed wife). Kinda tough choice to be honest.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this series of retrospectives, thank you TCD. I know this is a bit old now but did you ever play F.E.A.R.? I'd love to see you do a review of that classic.
I now live in Central Southern Louisiana. The mold is this bad, and everyone would know about that boat and wouldn't touch it. Also there are no basements here. 😃 After I moved here I retrospectively realized how well they crafted the regional elements.
Hey drinker, Apologies for sounding like a pretentious know-it-all, BUT... The Olympic park in NW Washington st. It's the largest area in the U S. with no roads, arguably the most remote area in the country. However, absolutely, someone should've noticed that giant boat in the swamp! Love your videos, keep up the great content!
I can’t help but feel that your Resident Evil retrospective series is incomplete without going over Resident Evil Revelations and Resident Evil Revelations 2. I don’t think a discussion of the series is complete without them. I’m kind of disappointed, as I would love to hear your opinions on them.
I really hated Evelin, she seems like she was transplanted from a Silent Hill style supernatural horror game, rather than the kind of bio horror that Resident Evil is best at. It's obnoxious that being a bio weapon gives her god like powers, on top of the played out cliche of 'creepy kid with powers' horror. It comes across as confused as to what it's genre should be. It's not scary when kids run around giggling, just annoying.
Just re played this on my ps5 , Looks amazing, runs incredible. (Opening scene has sky tearing needs to be patched) Great upgrade on the new system though, cant wait till 8 releases next Friday!
In all RE's a save room is sacred and not even Mr X will violate sanctuary. Item crafting is also classic RE and the 'chem fluid' idea while a bit silly is an attempt at a general crafting agent, but they should have stuck with the gunpowder mixes of RE2. I found the game shifting gears netween action and exploration gives it variety and satisfies the human need to shoot things.
This game really needed some more enemy variations. The molded got old, and the bakers were just bosses. A saving grace was the weapon upgrades that reminded of earlier games and increased replay value. Overall fun game though.
I believe the Resident Evil series is niw 25 years old...damn, I started playing when it first released in 1996. That makes me feel so damn old. At any rate, Resident Evil 7 was quite the departure from the other games but in the end I just had to play it. I really enjoyed the 7th entry of the venerable series but there were things in it I didn't care for. I have never been a fan of the unkillable stalker enemy. I did however enjoy the Molded enemies even though they were in very small numbers. The Bakers themselves were interesting and the Mia twist was fantastic but I wanted so much more from the game and I felt the last part was over far too fast. Flash forward to RE8 and wow is it one if the best in the entire saga. I know I have left a few posts on other videos about RE8 but I'm hoping one catches your attention Drinker. It is so good that I find it very hard to put down. I'm dying to see what you have to say about the 8th entry into the Resident Evil franchise.
Shame there wasn't a review on the VR portions of the game, which admittedly are hampered pretty severely by the PS4's really shitty hardware - but since VR is (last I heard) still platform locked to the PS4, it's the best/only option available. And really, after two playthroughs in VR, it has to be the standout VR title for the technology even to this day. Especially for it's integration into a AAA title. A game which provides the total immersion which VR promises, while circumventing the hokey and clunky controls that more often than not limits and ruins gameplay - having you play the entire game with a traditional controller and using the head-tracking for aiming. Would definitely recommend the experience, but I wouldn't be too upset at anybody who still wanted to hold out for a PC version or for the improvements the PS5 version will bring.
@@leonkuwata4510 Tatiana was The Drinker's super sexy stripper girlfriend but left him for a "more fulfilling life" whatever that means. She'll be back...
I agree with almost everything you said here, but I disagree with the criticism of the save rooms. It's a classic RE feature and I'm happy they brought it back.
For me one of the best parts of original RE games were these ridiculous af puzzles in the unlikeliest of places, well that and zombie survival part is cool too
I mean this is resident evil. A severed limb being reattached is pretty tame. One thing i kinda liked is that chris aims his weapons in the dlc whereas mia and ethan do not, showing chris is more comfortable and capable at shooting.
This got me into Resident Evil. I mean, I was too scared to actually play the game but it’s still a great game and it led to get the RE2 remake, which has made me almost shit myself more times than I’d care to admit.
Honestly, RE is one of the only gaming franchises that isn't online based that I could go back to any of the titles and have a good time. For how different each of em are, that's an accomplishment on it's own.
For all the many positives I agree with many of your criticisms I had them also, I wanted to know more about what kind of person Mia was? Ethan was to bland and the quips were lost on me he hardly even panics after losing a limb! I'd like to of seen he's frightened and got to question Mia about her job, keeping it secret etc, more enemy variety would of been nice not to many just a couple more would do, I much preferred the parts of the game near the start when it's slower moving and more focus is on exploring and building atmosphere rather than the action heavy sections that come later, also Eveline was a real disappointment as a final boss huh! :( she could of been way scarier and downright terrifying done right but instead we got...that 😔. Still for all my complaints I could easily give as many plaudits and the foundation is 1 big plus point! RE Engine is quality.
Hey, Drinker! Kinda late here. The first part at the Baker’s house is very satisfying to play & feels just like RCPD or the Spencer Mansion. By my second playthrough, I came to enjoy the ship session - it throws you off at first but it is very survival horror: you have no weapons at first, it is a bizarre environment, you approach everything slowly. The final part though - that you wisely glossed over - is frustrating, since you are now at generic cave, disposing of generic monsters, up the ass in weapons, not atmospheric at all. Also, Ethan is too bland! Besides that, having played every main line RE, I really enjoyed 7! The good parts are memorable, & struck fear & tension very competently. Great vid! 🇧🇷
I just noticed a small connection to resident evil gaiden the black sheep of the series for Gameboy color from the ship part altho not the same but still nice little touch from that game
I’m late to the party on these RE games. Played RE4 for the first time earlier this year and it easily became one of my favourite games of all time. I then played RE2 and that game became another favourite. From there I finished Village, 3 then 7 and they are all so excellent and legitimate creepy to play. The only game I’ve been told I can skip is 6
RE Revelations 2 played with the choice mechanic in a similar way to RE7. And by that, I mean much of the same outcome. It was during a boss fight with Claire and Moira though. If Claire uses the gun to deliver the finishing blow. You get the bad ending. If Moira uses the gun you get a visual of her trauma with guns. And you get one more boss fight with all the playable characters surviving.
I stopped the video at 19:37 so I didn't spoil the ending because I haven't beaten the game yet. About this review though, this time it really seemed like the "critical" part of his name came out. The dude does some very good essay style reviews, I just think he was a bit hard on this one. Given what the series was doing before RE7, and also what RE3R turned out to be, looking back I think we were very lucky to get this game the way we did. It's a gritty horror game in the vein of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, complete with tons of gore, filth, dread, and depravity. It has some rough edges, but overall is an incredible experience comparatively.
This game MUST be experienced in VR. It's a shame the RE2/3 remakes used basically the same engine but didn't have VR support...imagine actually being in the police station and looking up at (or fleeing in terror from) Tyrant/Nemesis. Yes please.
RE3 shotguns are notoriously blunderbuss-like, seeing them used in first person is an effin tragedy. No matter how "bad" the guy who can load, reload, fire and avoid-malfunction is, they shouldn't be putting out shot at sub one metre that's spreading like a garden sprinkler. Bullet sponge is the bane of immersion almost more than taking control away from the player with QTE and cutscenes. If you go first person with horror, the enemies need to be horrific enough to believeably disregard the power of human technology or they need to turn into jam&catfood like all things do when subjected to near-unstoppable forces.
I truly am in a middle stance with this game. I love the slow paced feeling, while not making it too tanky. The gun mechanics were, eh. The graphics and environment were great. The game felt a little more linear compared to others, and some parts were very scripted at times. Story can be dicey at times, but gets the job done.
As someone from Louisiana, the thing that bothered me the most was that the house was in the goddamn swamp but somehow still had a basement.
Perhaps it was built on a hill/high ground? Either way, it’s rather odd.
It actually leaks and gets flooded. At least it was accurate in that regard 🤣

I personally loved RE7
Me too
RE7 was fantastic
One of my favorite games ever. Played through it in VR and I absolutely shat myself.
Damn I wish you still reviewed games, good stuff
Let's just say, if my wife went missing in south Louisiana, I wouldn't have far to travel. Also, some of the swamps and mangroves in south Louisiana ARE that remote, even with gps and whatnot.
Eff off. Nowhere on mainland USA could a tanker wash up in, a, swamp. Just couldn’t happen for a bunch of reasons
Looking forward to your RE2 remake review.
I plan to do it as I have a lot to say about that game, but I'm hoping my RE vids will get more traffic before I do. They're a bit sparse at the moment!
Me too. Or maybe Resident Evil Gaiden on the GBA? :D
@@TheCriticalDrinker I was hoping you'd do Revelations 1&2.
It gets in your head man...especially in VR, I can't imagine playing it any other way
I love vr, too. It’s hardly talked about, but this game was great in vr and made getting a ps4 worth the money.
stand out moments for me was the fun house area (and how to beat it) , and the section near the start where you find all puzzle pieces for a secret door and ethan says 'who the fuck makes these things' , nice bit of self awareness form teh devs xd
I suppose after feeling nearly powerless for most of the game, this whole Taking Your Life Back part would make sense for motivating players.
Same. What's a good resi game without blowing up an end boss to kingdom come
This is review is excellent man. Very in depth and informative. Plans on doing more of these? This has to be one of the best RE7 reviews on CZcams
Great video! My favourite game of all time. It's good to see how much your production quality improved over the years, but it was already really good at this point.
That finger-removal bit...years after this video, I believe Capcom heard you.
how can someone sound so different after already reaching adulthood with only a 5year time difference? You really upped the audio quality and testosterone levels throughout the years
He also got progressively drunker.
Nice vid!
(Cool to see you've got a serious side about ya', too...)
It may be the best, most immersive video game I have ever played
. Well done, Capcom.
SAMEEE
I know I'm late to the party, but the limb reattaching has to do with the heavy implication that Ethan is infected. In fact if Jack hacks your leg off in his first encounter he will pretty much show you that can happen. Ethan will even ask what the fuck when it happens
And then RE8 explained it
This is the drinker? Hard to beleave jajja man you áre amazing i will LOVE to see more videogame videos
Woah! It's wild to hear Drinker's old vocal cadence and mic quality
Born and raised in south Louisiana, pretty normal shit if you’ve ever gotten lost looking for a bonfire party around Houma.
I've came here from your newer videos and thought I went to the wrong channel when the voice came on!
Ethan could handle all of that insanity with such grace because he's from Texas. Obviously
He's a short man from Texas, a man of can do.

Yea if u have the chance to get rid of the old bat, who wouldn't take it?
Especially for a southern cutie. Your ‘wife’ was a liar and kept things from you , and gets possessed occasionally and tries to kill you. The choice isn’t really that obvious .
I chose Zoe without thinking a second.

Brilliant review as always love this game my drink in Scottish weather
As for the choice of which Waifu you take home with you one of them you already have a better chance of sleeping with (your wife, who is also a secret agent which is kinda cool) or the other girl who while she is cuter and hasn’t used a chainsaw to chop off your hand is just a random stranger. But you did promise you’d take her with you and it’s thanks to her help that you survived in the first place(no thanks to your supposed wife). Kinda tough choice to be honest.
Minor Spoiler Alert...
In one of the DLCs for the game, Redfield gets the chance to save the other girl after all. So both get out alive.
I'm not used to hearing you sound so positive, and sober...
well RE8 kinda explains why Ethan can handle RE7 the way he does, hes a mold man too after Jack says "Welcome to the family, son."
I thought that was a great fun nod to video game mechanics as well. Especially when he just slaps his hand back on after lady cuts it off lol.
Can’t wait for your review for Village
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this series of retrospectives, thank you TCD.
I know this is a bit old now but did you ever play F.E.A.R.? I'd love to see you do a review of that classic.
Re 7 may very well be my favorite game of all time.
Been replayimg this masterpiece in prep for RE: VIllage.
Can't wait.
I now live in Central Southern Louisiana. The mold is this bad, and everyone would know about that boat and wouldn't touch it. Also there are no basements here. 😃 After I moved here I retrospectively realized how well they crafted the regional elements.
Hey drinker,
Apologies for sounding like a pretentious know-it-all, BUT...
The Olympic park in NW Washington st. It's the largest area in the U S. with no roads, arguably the most remote area in the country. However, absolutely, someone should've noticed that giant boat in the swamp!
Love your videos, keep up the great content!
I am so glad you found the "drunk" voice!! LOL
Resident Evil 7 was amazing
I can’t help but feel that your Resident Evil retrospective series is incomplete without going over Resident Evil Revelations and Resident Evil Revelations 2. I don’t think a discussion of the series is complete without them. I’m kind of disappointed, as I would love to hear your opinions on them.
Haha I don’t know if it’s just me but the molded scare the shit out of me. Especially that first encounter...whew, man, that was a moment.
Ever play the F.E.A.R. series?
I used to have the first game. Shame it isn’t reverse compatible for Xbox 1...
@@TexasHollowEarth yeah, isnt RE7 writn by the same guy? Personally in a series as absurd as Resident Evil, Eveline didn't feel out of place.
An amazing review
Just found this old video and you sound so weird sober. Have a few drinks. I'm buying. 🍻
Back when The Drinker was just Will
Wow, your character has certainly developed over the years, when you first started talking, I literally said “who’s that,” lol!
Watched the first 2 mins..is this the critical drinker? really? where? sry... i don't know... go away now!

I agree with almost everything you said here, but I disagree with the criticism of the save rooms. It's a classic RE feature and I'm happy they brought it back.
For me one of the best parts of original RE games were these ridiculous af puzzles in the unlikeliest of places, well that and zombie survival part is cool too
Brother, I like your regular speaking voice a lot more than your "drunken" version. Great video!
I loved the game, beat it for the first time recently
I mean this is resident evil. A severed limb being reattached is pretty tame. One thing i kinda liked is that chris aims his weapons in the dlc whereas mia and ethan do not, showing chris is more comfortable and capable at shooting.
Good review, but part of me really wants a drinker character version
This channel is great!
Drinker is so nice and polite here it makes me wonder what made him so jaded lol
I saved Zoey. The chopper thing upset me too. The Village just f that.
Nice to hear a fellow Scot on CZcams great vid.
Thanks
Hey mr drinker, started drinking and watching your vids, gotta ask, would you review the trailer of resident evil village
Great vid! 🇧🇷
Playing this on the Playstation 4 with VR was pretty cool
I just noticed a small connection to resident evil gaiden the black sheep of the series for Gameboy color from the ship part altho not the same but still nice little touch from that game
Krauser's 1st appearance before RE4.
@murat balamsa- I swore he was in Gaiden. I'm well-aware of his DSC appearance, as that was after RE4 & on Wii.
I played this on vr after taking LSD !!! Crazy 😜
The DLC is also the best DLC that has ever come out for any game ever.
The intro song is ❤️❤️
Play it on the PS4 VR. This game is bloody freaky then. Even the second half. It’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. Even with the cliches.
Alien Isolation is quite good for that. At best you can push it back, never kill it.
I dont know if Id call a look back on a year old game a "retrospective" but I like them anyway! Great job!
I truly am in a middle stance with this game. I love the slow paced feeling, while not making it too tanky. The gun mechanics were, eh. The graphics and environment were great. The game felt a little more linear compared to others, and some parts were very scripted at times. Story can be dicey at times, but gets the job done.
Well done!
That's not the first time you fight Jack. The first time is in the garage...and goddamn it's epic as hell!
Wow. So fresh-faced with a cheap mic. From humble beginnings… Not bad, but so much better now. Keep up the great content.
