I was there! I was there! Yes, I'm an old man now, but I was there...back when they had this original "star studded" line-up. These guys are truly the most underrated rockers on the planet...with talent to spare. I've never seen a live act play as grippingly well as this band. Anybody who knows "live music" knows that Chicago was the pinnacle of the "live artform". Their brass section, as if Cetera, Kath, Lamm, etc. were not enough, that brass section was so darn precise...floating in and out of songs with meticulous beauty. You just gotta love this most original of all bands. Depaul University proved it could do much more than just produce great basketball teams...and Demon Dogs (of the Vienna variety). How a band like the Beatles or Chicago could contain such talent from irrational exuberance, one will always wonder?
Holy Moly! I hope you realize how lucky you were to have been there..What an amazing moment in time to see arguably one of the best bands in the world.
I am envious you saw this performance! I have seen them 5 times in the 70's and 80's and remain convinced there were truly underrated but one of the best bands ever. I miss those days!
21 years on, and I still can't hold back the tears watching Terry sing and play. Even though his time on Earth was short, his playing and singing are immortal.
Wow, is that spot-on. He was not only an amazingly gifted musician, he was the heart and soul of Chicago. To this day, Lee Loughnane can't talk about him without tearing up.
In your 20's if you aren't a Democrat you have no heart it is said. If you are not a Republican by 30 you have no soul. And if by 40 you do not realize both parties are filled with corrupt incompetent people and voting is useless you just might narcoleptic.

Kath, Lamm, and Cetera were what made this band awesome and as though that wasn't good enough they added the brass section which was unheard of for rock bands. Cetera chewing gum as he sings and plays, Kath with his phenomenal guitar playing and singing, and Lamm playing the keys and singing along with the brass sounding off is a band of sheer talent.
I've seen Lou Gramm when Foreigner was in their prime chewing gum while singing. It actually keeps the mouth from feeling dry and keeps the throat feeling lubricated.
@PianoMan84 Thanks for responding. Yes, that's the main purpose that gum is chewed while singing. I used to do that (as a singer myself, but I stopped chewing gum years ago though I still sing), but honestly, I would never recommend a singer to do that because this could Happen (1). The gum could fly out of your mouth while singing especially in front of people (2) You could unwittingly swallow the gum while singing because you have to also swallow between the words of a song to also lubricate the throat and you have to catch your breathe too. There's a lot to maintaining the voice than people realize.
He was such a GOOD MAN, Terry Kath, the world lost a bit of its luster when he died. I adored his songs, his playing, his voice. We lost a big thing that may have helped change the world when he passed.

With all due respect Terry couldn't reach those high notes like Peter, so both Cetera and Kath made this smoke , good writing by Lamm. Similar to TOTOs Steve Lukather and Bobby Kimball on "Rosanna" written by David Paich..
Chicago was my first favorite favorite band, starting around 1970. I don’t normally cry when people I don’t know die, but when Terry died , I went to my bedroom and sat on the end of my bed and cried. They were never quite the same after that
This song is just one example of how well Peter and Terry's voices blended together and how those two really got into their music. They were the absolute best!
Peter: (Original lyric) "Well, I hope the President Knows what he's into, I don't know. Oh, I just don't know". (at approx 1:45) Last line Peter ad libed in: "NIXON HAD TO GO"
Funny how Nixon got blamed by the left for Vietnam when it was Kennedy who got us into it and LBJ who escalated it. Nixon was looking for a way out from the beginning. I never agreed with Chicago's politics, but remain a huge fan, because it's about the music.
The true, real and genuine Chicago pop,rock/jazz band that I know is no longer the same after their great, amazing and incredible lead guitarist Terry Alan Kath passed away.I still missed him terribly even to this very day including his "Ray Charles" baritone voice. And the musical talent/talents of the late Terry Alan Kath only comes "every years 100 years or even longer."And continue to rest in peace,Terry!!!
Two wonderful singers. You could not compare them to each other because they each had their own Sound of Music music. I listen to this everyday and remember the good days. Long live the Old Chicago
Pete's bass and vocals trumped all instruments during the performance, but thank you Mr. Lamm for the writing! Terry, you are so for real nearly 40 years after your passing.

This has always been my favourite CHICAGO song. To see it live, real faces performing, almost matches my imagination of what singers look like etc....Just an amazing band!
Oh the countless hours I use to play air guitar to Terry’s solos as a kid and then later on on an actual guitar, I’ll forever be in awe of his playing, you left us way too soon brother.
I would've loved to have heard this song develop in a jam session in the early 70's! ALL of you guys together in the early days really were incredible, even looking at it today. Peter Cetera was amazing with a Bass Guitar in his hand. And Terry Kath. Damn it, man. You died WAY too soon! We needed SO much more out of you.
I believe Robert Lamm did most of his songwriting alone, but then he presented his stuff to the group and just let them fill in the gaps. Must have been awesome in that studio as this all came together.
It's amazing how Terry and Peter look like brothers. You could tell Terry was the quarterback as they put it. Even Lamm kind of looked like Terry and Pete. Brothers. What a band. A band that will always be in my heart. They went to a level many bands don't.
Pete isn't recognized as one of great bass guitarists of the 1970's. He is. His tone and choice of notes were killer. A master at laying down fat grooves.✌
Great concise comment regarding Peter's musical/creative abilities. Terry and Peter were so well balanced in call and answer not only vocally but with their instruments as well.Terry Kath, you are sorely missed by all but if there is a rock 'n roll heaven well you know they've got a hell of a band...
Yeah, Peter was-and probably still is-an amazing bass player, in addition to being a stellar and unique vocalist. Bobby was also a strong singer and keys man, and Danny’s drumming was phenomenal! The horn section and arrangements were just fabulous. The songwriting was fantastic. There’ll never again be as one-of-a-kind, talented and creative a group of artists as these, especially since the recording business nowadays, sadly, does not value and nurture musicianship and innovation so much as recording efficiency, adherence to formulas and profitability!

As legend has it: Chicago opened for Jimi Hendrix once at the Whiskey A Go-Go in LA....and Jimi was so blown away by Terry Kath’s guitar playing he did NOT want to ever follow them again, lol....a greater tribute to Kath’s guitar talent, I cannot think of!
I saw CTA open for Hendrix at the Forum in 1969, and the audience was so blown away they clamored for more, but Jimi was waiting to go on..
How would you like to have Jimi Hendrix tell you that you blow him away on guitar! That’s exactly what Hendrix said!! Wow
I remember watching this on TV. New Years Eve.
Many of the lyrics in the song still ring true in 2017.
That’s what makes it a classic
I had the same haircut as Terry in 1975. I miss his guitar sound. RIP Terry.
that sumbitch sure knew how to use that wah peddle....
I still love this song. It has a great lyric, fantastic music and incredibly gifted performers!!
