- In this episode of Whatever Bites we are kayak bass fishing in Newport Beach/Harbor with a few different fishing lures trying to catch well...whatever bites. My god it was a slow day but we had a good time none the less! We were kayak fishing for Spotted Bay Bass primarily but it was cool to see a few different species come through. I have an inflatable fishing paddle board.
Would you risk trying one in the bay?
My fear is shark bite, or a puncture from a spine. My board has 3 chambers as this was one of my purchase decisions before hand. It is a star rival isup 13'.
Hmm not sure man Iâve not had any experience with them but Iâve seen it done for sure. I wouldnât worry about sharks in the bays. Iâd say give it a shot! Just keep it close to shore and fish for spotties until you feel more comfortable getting out further. If it deflates at least your right next to shore.

We all have days like that. Thereâs not much you can do if the fish arenât ready to play.
You could go back there next week and use the same lures and fish them the same way and have a totally productive day.
Next time you go to PV try fishing the kelp beds with some shrimp and tie off to the kelpđđ

My coworker made a cast and pulled the eye partly off my new Phenix Black Diamond. Man was I pissed and it took a long time to get over lol

I wouldnât go lighter than 12lb flouro in Newport it all around structure and the areas with grass can get some really big halibut for the light gear

Throw a 2.8inch keitech on a 1/4 oz head and after you cast put the reel in gear and let it fall towards you until it hits the bottom. Than slowly crank it in right off the bottom. I feel like your retrieve was way too fast. The eel grass patches and morring fields are best in newport. Also try to get yo right against pilons and drop down right next to them and then jig it a few times once it hits the bottom. Any fish on the pilon will eat it if there is a fish. 8lb is fine just be careful fishing around structure and set ur drag right. Newport is a little more tricky than other harbors but you swim it low and slow you'll get bit on alot of different things. Those irons will work very good at the bait reciever drop right next to the barge or cast and you get cudas calicos sandbass and sometimes spotties. Anywhere else soft plastics work the best and usually the smaller the better unless it's in the warmer months and the fish are more active. My favorite baits to fish in Newport are
2.8inch keitech
Zoom fluke
3 inch bighammer
1/4 oz hookup baits
Creature baits

I fish Newport bay a lot on my skiff . All I use there is 8 lbs Pline fluorocarbon with hookup bait or the ultra heavy weight in the red gold and with flakes.
Never have any break offs with the 8lb?

No my wife and I do very good with the 8lbs . We catch lots of spotted bay bass , sand bass and halibut
One day my son hooked up on a nice legal size halibut in front of Davey locker but he broke off at the boat
Ahh that sucks! Iâm still waiting on my legal halibut. Was like a half inch short once in Alamitos Bay. Are there a lot of halibut in Newport?
