Pinscreen
Vložit
- čas přidán 28. 02. 2012
- Pinscreen consists of an array of pins arranged in a perforated block. By pushing an object against the back of Pinscreen, an 'image' of the object appears at the front, created out of the pins that have been pushed forward. Tilt the Pinscreen backwards, and all the pins return to their starting position, and the picture is erased.
The Pinscreen was originally created in 1976 by Ward Fleming, an American inventor. His early creations were large screens that appeared in museums and art galleries. In the 1980s he created the smaller hand held version that you see here.
We think this is the largest version of the handheld Pinscreen, at 13 x 18cm.
The pins have been cut off and blunted at the back, so as not to be dangerous. However it is important that people do not try and create an image of their face, with their eyes open. Even blunted pins are not a good thing to get in your eye! For this reason, we suggest the pinscreen should be used by people age 16+.

"And now I have to replace my seriously scratched glasses"
Hello, just reminding you of your comment 7 years ago.
AKSHUALLY! You'll find that as glass is harder than steel, the pins won't have caused any noticeable scratching on the lenses.
@@bombkangaroo most modern glasses are made with plastic lenses. You so much as touch them they'll get micro scratches. This thing with ruin them
@@bombkangaroo Most eyeglasses today are made of Poly-carbonate (plastic), not actual glass, which is a good thing because glass shatters if it gets hit by something, and you don't want glass shards going into your eye.

My brother had one of these when I was a kid. I'd always find it when he wasn't home and play around with it, putting toys and of course my face on it to see what it looked like. I hadn't seen one for years until I happened upon this video! Very fun stuff, I'd love to see some sort of virtual program that simulates it, lots of physics-based objects to account for, it'd probably be pretty tough to program, but lots of fun regardless.
You should watch the "NIN -Only" video ;)
And the making of said video. Not physics collision, but still cool stuff.

This was so satisfying back then. Too bad some of the pins bent down because of the kids.
I actually had one of those growing up. I think my parents still have it tucked away somewhere.
I still have a very large one from the 90's. It's 2 feet by 3 feet. I loved pressing it against my body parts that are not easily seen. My ears were the coolest to do, because the depth of the ear.
In fact I'm going downstairs to get it out and mess with it again. So many memories in such a simplistic idea.

Hey! I have one of this. But in a film I see one with entire body size O_O
I have one of these too. They're pretty fun.
This is my favourite. I remember when I see that thing for the first time in a store, was magic.

i had one of these as a kid, The best part was the weird texture, it has a strange, ticklish feel to it
Puts a face into the toy. Gorilla with sunglasses appear.
i remember the first time i saw this...must have been around 1978, i was just a lil kid and we were on vacation in toronto, visiting the museum of science and technology, and they had a GIANT pinboard in one of the hallways. it was probably like 6' tall and 4' wide (or at least it seemed that big to my little eyes) an i was utterly fascinated by it, but too scared to go over and touch it myself. lol, i must have sat on a bench watching people play with it for at least an hour.
I really like these, I don't know why. But they feel so commonplace! It's interesting to see you review a toy I know and like! c:
I had a girlfriend when I was a teen who's father owned one of these. Found it to be quite fun! Tried it out with all kinds of things, surprising that it only came about in the 70s. It's so simple, it could easily have been invented decades or even centuries before then. Just takes someone with some imagination to come up with it.
I tried this at home
My eyes were good i had no glasses
I still don't have glasses....or eyes.
I became daredevil and now i am good at typinh wiyhoot seeing

There *HAS* to be some analogue-to-digital computer application for this principle. But for the life of me, I can't find anything on it!
Yes they are. On MIT they made something like pin-art manual interface with motor drives for touching objects on a distance via internet data transmission.
Whoah, was not expecting the accuracy when pressed upon the face, I though it could only do one default image
I used to have one of those, actually!! Mine was purple, and I always found it fascinating how when you pushed something against it, it makes a perfect, almost mirror image of the original item. This brings back loads of memories.
I like how he talks so calmly after just pushing his face into a thousand pins

I've had one of these displayed above my PC monitor for the past 30 years. The current imprint is LEGO Luke Skywalker having a lightsaber duel with LEGO Darth Vader.
I may switch that for an imprint Cyberfrog once I get the PVC statue.
