On a roadtrip and my van hasn’t been running well. But I carry on through the beautiful state of Oregon. I stayed at Manzanita Rest Area just outside Grant’s Pass. It wasn’t ideal but I slept well and am ready to get back to driving.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

A quick and cheap maintenance tip. Change your air filter. It takes about 5 minutes to change out. Probably cost less than $20 bucks to buy a new one.
Absolutely, was just about to suggest this. A potential cheap and easy fix.
Yes, I’ve already replaced it. I did check it though and still looks new with a few hundred miles on it
So what about getting a valve job?
A little windy and bad gas? Possibly it's all that Yellow Bird.
Ok coffee and Scott time I’m ready thanks Scott 😀
Thanks Lee
Every Monday at midnight is when you come on here, love your humour and vids, hope the van is OK Scott.
Sending you light and love! Life is filled with obstacles and challenges. Nothing we can do but keep on keeping on. I’m glad your life is what you want it to be!
Thank you. Things are good
You are cute and you make me laugh too. I hope you're feeling better.
Thank you Scott. Excited to see where you show up next.
Me too
Hi Scott glad the van is still getting you around and you're felling better safe travels linda in Scotland ❤
Thanks Scott. ✌🏼
I'm so glad the van is okay for now😊
Maybe your van engine just needed the cobwebs blown out of it with a longer road trip. Fixed. easy peasy. 😅
Ahaha, counting hatched chickens?!?! As you were describing the pillows and blankets to block you in, I was thinking, like a baby, but, hey, whatever works -- ya gotta be comfy and relaxed. Hope you sleep well tonite parked at a better angle and van gets a rest, too. Be well and good luck.
I've got my fingers crossed for your van. Keep chuggin' along.
Since the company knows the engines are defective they should replace the engines
There’s a test to be taken and I was denied
czcams.com/video/uMBDKAcSoPk/video.htmlsi=Q2r15QFOueyr1Lwr
Van engine problems; may I suggest replacing the HT - high tension - power leads that connect the distributor to each of the spark plugs. Excessive oil consumption; changing to a slightly higher viscosity oil may be of help in ameliorating the problems you are experiencing, albeit whilst not directly addressing the fundamental design flaw(s) you describe. Great vlogs, hope this helps - Mike RM
It’s been shown that using a heavier weight of oil exacerbates the variable valve timing issue. There are some great engine rebuild companies that have shared information on the subject. Seems these engines can last a long time if the oil is kept fresh
Hi there scott I'm really concerned about your van hopefully the van keeps being reliable for you transmission and engine concerns subside I hope. That sandwich on sourdough looked great by the way
Thanks Calvin. It’s nothing to be overly concerned about. This is simply what we vehicle dwellers deal with on a daily basis
Nice video. Yes less mileage is a good way to go. After all, you channel is called static camper
Being static does make me happiest
I use Lucas injector cleaner in a tank full of gas, once or twice a year.
It works for me. They run two for $9 specials at O’Reillys.
As you know, in Oregon, you may not fill your own tank and when they fill it they usually top it off, which is not good for your car. You can ask them not to top it off, or better still, ask for a specific amount to avoid the problem altogether. I never like to see gas pouring onto the highway after a fill-up. I am not a mechanic, but this advice was given to me by a mechanic when I was driving in Oregon.
We are allowed to fill our own tanks now
Good to know. It's been awhile since I was there last.
Good to see you again , I love your channel and appreciate the videos
Thanks Kris
Hi Scott, I enjoy watching your videos,I'm in the Seattle area, still working for another 4 years, but I'm a full timer van life.I have a 2000 Toyota Seinna XLT.After owning for a couple years,I have found it runs better on Chevron gas,a little more expensive, but it has techron in it,which is an engine cleaner.Since using this gas,I no longer have the symptoms you were describing.Safe travels!
Just s thought on winter vs. summer gas. The change takes place in early June to less volatile fuel because of evaporation in summer. So no telling you may have put in summer gas which your motor may prefer. Something to research? Safe travels Scott.
Thank you for sharing your travels! I hope your van feels better soon. And you too!
Thanks Madison
Yes, I do block myself in, helps heaps, I can't sleep head down, too uncomfortable
Every time I pass a Home Depot I keep thinking about stopping and buying some blocks of wood to block up under the bed. One of these days.
@@StaticCamperVan I just use extra blankets and jackets
I understand the angst of van troubles..it's a real fear! I've also learned not to use additives in an old vehicle..got head gasket blown ..
That’s terrible!
Thanks, Scott
That van, the way you understand it, it's like an extension of your body. You travel through such beautiful scenery.
Hey Scott, when you pass through Newport maybe give it another try. I’m spending my 3rd summer here. While the city has made a lot of changes, it’s still very receptive to nomads. Street parking overnight is prevalent and state parks and coastlines for days. I stay here because of the grocery stores, the ocean and river views, abundance of parking. What isn’t allowed anymore is abuse. Staying in one place for weeks, leaving trash, that sort of thing. Thanks for another interesting vid!!
For some reason, I am not very popular in Newport
Newport sounds like they get it. Good to see the crackdown on bad apples only.
It’s always a good idea to sit there for a while!
You are headed back north just as I am moving from Seattle to NY.
You shared a trail with me a couple of years ago in the Olympics and I hiked that trail so many times after that. Thanks!
I will definitely keep watching from the east coast so I can live vicariously through your videos.
New York?!?
Great vid!
It's rose festival week in ptld.
I enjoy watching your video thank you
i feel like 9 years and 100k miles is just breaking in, these cargo vans go forever don't they, lol, obviously not forever, but i see their bigger brothers like the e150s and savanas go for 300k miles or more. keep the dream alive in that small rig! i love this rig! haha!
Well… this is a Chrysler product 😂😭
@@StaticCamperVan what made you go for it when you were buying it over other brands? and what would you get now if god forbid this one died tomorrow? knock on wood.
@GimmeSomeAdventure it was well reviewed at the time and had everything I was hoping for. There isn’t a vehicle being sold in North America that I would like at the moment. Hopefully that changes when the time comes
Oh Scott. .remember it isn't good when you sleep with your head down cause of the van's position.❤😊Be safe
Welcome to the neighborhood! ✌
Safe travels Scott. The PNW is so beautiful.
I'm glad the van is still getting you where you need to go and also happy to hear you are feeling better. Looking forward to seeing what adventures the van will take you on next.
And oh my! I wish I could sleep even 8 hours! I just wake up!
If you're worried about your van's engine, take it to mechanic and have him/her drive it. They will know and tell you for sure.
Prayers for you and your van 🙏❌⭕
Usually a compression test for the engine is not too hard to do and provides a good insight to the engine condish. Yes to the fuel filter swap out too. Plus the air filter sunlight/mileage check.
Glad you're feeling better. Such beautiful eggs - I love Natural Grocers!
Sending you prayers.
Next week I will be seeing that view but in Pennsylvania ❤
Maybe at some point give the van a good service. Change all filters. Maybe even the coolant. The van probably needs a good run from time to time. Just seen your other video about the engineering problems with the engine.
You make me laugh Scott, "toddler", "gas". 😄 Beautiful views, & hope your van holds up a while yet. Stay safe out there!
It happens in older vehicles when you change altitude, just clean all your fuel lines and replace your fuel filters.
You should see a dramatic difference. It happened to me back in 1988 when I drove my Toyota 4x4 from Florida to Colorado,
The fuel filters clogged when I got just outside of Tennessee. Luckily I found a mechanic to help in the middle of nowhere.
Gorgeous countryside ❤ Love your humour-slept like a toddler 😅 Enjoy your videos. From Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺
🙋♀️☕️Truly a beautiful park setting to stop for the evening. I'm eyeing up that picnic table. Looks like a delightful place to have a cup of coffee and to simply take in the beauty 🌿🏞🌲
❤Good Evening ✨🌆 Scott ! Gald your Van is in Good Shape & your on Top of it! Your Lunch looks Delicious 😋😋😋 The Highways your driving on are so Beautiful ❤️ with the Mountains and Trees! 🤩 Gald your having a Good Breeze today and its not real 🥵 Thank You for Sharing your Adventures ,enjoy them, see you on the Next 1 👍🤞👌✌️🌻🌞🙏🙌🌟🌅🌄✨🎆🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Thanks for the video. Hope your van keeps chugging along for a long time. Safe travels!
Thanks Rosie
Can't wait for next episode, see where you end up... hee!
Hi Scott...beautiful place. Hope the van issues get better. Praying for you. Try to rest before you go on the road again.❤❤😊😊😊
O ALSO MY HONDA HAS ALOT OF MILES OVER TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND THANK GOD IT STILL RUNS WE WOULD BE REALLY SCREWD
I'm familiar with that stretch of I-5, it IS noisy! Once we made it to that area and pulled into Indian Mary campground (county) and they happened to have a couple of spots available. I think it was about $20 but well worth it to us, very quiet, beautiful and nice people as camp hosts. Bonus: showers.
I'm with you, Scott ... if I can get 8-10 hours of sleep I'm happy.
I love this channel. It fuels my wanderlust! 🔥🔥♥️♥️
Thank you!
Uneven ground is hard. I've done the same for my bed. Little tuck here and there will fix the uneven.
The cooler the temperature (in the Summer) the better !
8:01 Ok, so I see you’re headed North of Grants Pass I5. Interesting to see where yr going! I’m in Portland but I’m sure u already passed or diverted by the time this is posted.
I wish you’d have a meet and greet near Oregon or on the Oregon Coast! 😃👏🏻
Yes Scott you are correct Natural Grocers is a Colorado based company. I used to work at the one in Bend Oregon. Good company.
I like their store in Las Cruces. Good store.
Toddler lol that will be my new line from now on. I catch myself saying oh well.anyway so glad you and your van is better.
Tasty brunch sandwich, you got some great quick fix setups dude. Today I saw what looked like an identical white 2016 ram promaster at an intersection, coming back from the doctor in Michigan, but pretty sure it wasn't you. Roll on.
Dehydration can be caused from a lack of nutients and/or vitamins. Potatoes, beans rice and leafy greens will help. Bananas also. The more we dont eat, the less we want to eat. We must nurture our relationship with food. Just passing on what ive learned.
Take it easy Scott have a save trip, always like to watch your videos
Thanks Terry
If you ever drive your vehicle with the fuel level under a 1/4 of a tank, it could be fuel filter. My engine started acting up, i needed a filter. The mechanic said that driving on low fuel causes trash in the gas or tank to become more concentrated and clog gas filter.
Good looking egg samich.
I love Natural Grocers! I buy my herbs and other natural things there. Texas is full of those stores.
I’m enjoying some Oregon weather myself. Funny how the extra warm days emptied out the campgrounds.
I’m sorry to ask the obvious. Since hot air is thinner, how old is your air filter? A easy fix. But I’m sure you thought of that.
It’s clean with less than 800 miles on it. I checked it a few weeks ago
Very enjoyable video to watch Scott! Glad you are escaping that awful extreme heat. 👍😃😉
Summer is here!
Thanks for the video tonight. Best wishes that the van problem gets sorted out. By the way, never pass gas [carriage return] stations when the next one a long way away.
Happy trails and stay safe my friend
Thank you
Good luck with your trip North. I stayed at that rest stop many times. Never had any problems. It reminds me of a park.
Thinking back, I think I stayed on the southbound side once a few years ago
Hi Scott, waking up to another great video, watching it with a coffee thank you.
When I’ve previously had issues similar to your van, first thing I’ve done is just change the fuel filter. This often gets overlooked, but does cause issues if not changed regularly.
Just a thought, hope it’s helpful 😊
A few years ago I did a sleep study. They picked me in a limo and I noticed it had 350 miles on it. The driver said these cars run forever if you take good care of them. Looks like you have a long way to go with that van as long as your engine is good. Happy trails.
What a lovely scenic drive! 🌲 Thanks for taking us along for the ride! 👍
Thanks for riding along
@@StaticCamperVan, anytime! 😁
Im sure youve already thought of the fuel filter but your van seems to have some of the classic symptoms. Anyway you have a good vlog and travel one of my favorite areas...and a big plus is you love coffee. Hope both you and your van get to feeling better.
Great video
Thanks Alvin
Back forty of this rest area , is good size should be safe.
I'm here in Colorado and I love Natural Grocers. Glad you're feeling better.
Thanks Shaun
The other day you made me laugh when you said you got to Oregon and your ankle bracelet didnt go off. Good one.
Hey Scott, I tried a light decaf and an Ethiopian mix. At first I wasnt sure cause I normally do med roasts. But I like it! Thanks!
Awesome
Wow it’s so beautiful up there ! U mentioned chronic illness now I feel sad 😢 ! I will 🙏🏾 for u ! Godspeed !
Nothing to be concerned about. I’m like everyone else. Thank you
I think I may have got bad gas at Arco 87 octane. Some reviews say it causes pinging, depending on the motor. And many people say Arco is good. I haven't tried 89 or 92. Chevron and Shell get good reviews which I will try next. I used Royal Purple octane boost which was recommend over Lucas. I think it helped but still get a bit pinging when motor not fully hot. Also learned how clean / new are gas station tanks, how clean is fuel truck and how busy the gas staion is all affects cleanliness of fuel.
The Lucas will cause the engine to clean stuff out and with your low miles daily and then going high speeds for long periods of time will get the gunk out too. Just gotta be patient with your van. Plus the mountains there are rough. I’ve been through there a lot growing up
🚨Do not add octane booster to your van if it is not a high performance motor. You will blow head gaskets, crack exhaust manifolds and a host of other stuff that is really expensive. 🚨
Thanks
@StaticCamperVan maybe at your earliest convenience you should add gas to dilute what you already have in it. I used to put octane booster in a brand new 350 Chevy crate motor. In 2 months, blown head gaskets, cracked heads, and cracked exhaust manifolds. That was 30 years ago. I'm sure in today's cars it could do a lot worse. I enjoy watching your videos when you're happy, not when you're unhappy, so I'm just looking out for ya. Safe travels, and I'm looking forward to your next video.
There is too much heat and compression.
@@chrishogansr3063 do you know that all of my videos go up on a two to four week delay?
@StaticCamperVan no I didn't. Me and my wife just spent the night at the Noyo Harbor Inn in Fort Bragg for a little get away. I was telling my wife were gonna bump into you one day. Looking forward it. I'm from Lake County.
Oh, you were in my town (Eugene)! That Natural Grocers is right up the street from where I used to live :) We have lots of local natural foods stores as well if you ever find yourself back here--we're a buncha hippies around here.
Good to know!
Have ever refilled the radiator at some point because overheating can also occur if u get an air bubble in the cooling system which will require you bleeding that air out, also when was last time u changed the air filter ? Worth a look. Using the correct oil viscosity is important for an aging engine. U have done the plugs, what about your leads ? If they are old u could lose power under heavy work load. I could go on but I’m sure ur friend has mentioned all these anyway. Good luck
This van has never had cooling issues. Plugs are new, just changed them a few weeks ago, I have a video on it
My 94 chevy started acting up with the heat like that.
Goodness! yeah, I hope it was bad gasoline and it will heal. Fingers crossed for you. Yes, Oregon is a gorgeous state. Enjoy the time there. Soy in eggs? Oh dear. I need to look into that because soy is on my 'naughty' list. Here's hoping that your time with your mechanic friend will have time for some laughs and not all be work. Best to you and your van.
I don’t have bad gas! Oh wait, sorry. Got me again. Yes, soy is used heavily in animal feed of all kinds
I hear you on the car worries! Last year alternator, starter, new spark plugs...this year started out January front end work struts, cost a pretty penny...Couple weeks back need new rear shocks and initiation switch acting up.we got so fed up...a person needs dependable transportation..So at a 150 miles and car still looks pretty good we traded her in.we hated to go in debt again but what's the choise.wishing you good luck in figuring it out .interesting video!
I enjoy your videos here from Redding Ca
Thank you. Hope you’re staying cool
Toddler …you had me laughing out loud. When I had my 1984 Volvo during the 90’s, I never ever put cheap gas, oil or anything because it was a very old car. Only one time I put in regular gasoline and my car was sluggish and I knew I had to use really good gas to keep it going. Sometimes, you have to ‘baby’ it a little. Miss my car.🚗
To be honest, I was very fussy yesterday but much better today
I am a big fan of fuel and carburetor cleaner additive. At Walmart it is about $2. I add it about every 3 tanks. To me, it seems to work after several years of use. Just a suggestion.
Thanks!
Hey Thanks Ken. Hope you’re doing great
It's good to see you ~. Hope your trails are good till we see you again on monday.
Thanks Julie. I’ll try and get a video up for you channel members before Monday
@@StaticCamperVan don't stress it. Take care of yourself first.
Sometimes high altitudes also affect engines.
Interesting, not something I was aware of, or considered. Ref the HT leads, I have been told that they can deteriorate over time, depending on the type of material used to make the lead, carbon or copper. If they are the original factory fitted ones, replacements would , at worst, eliminate one area of doubt if nothing else. Here's hoping it doesn't come to a costly rebuild, fingers crossed, and good luck in your endeavours. Best wishes Mike R M
You're blessed to have the option of so much space in the U.S. Living in Ireland - options are somewhat limited. There is a ship passage to spain but everyone owns something in europe. It is my dream to move to the U.S and have that sense of freedom. That one can go somewhere so remote - no one can find you.
Hope you get it straightened out for very little money good luck
Peace
Could be the O2 Lambda sensor Scott
Sounds like you might need to check the air filter, spark plugs . Ther are many reasons for slow acceleration. But it's nothing to do with the engine
