Finland being the only country not to give Sweden a single televote point is actually hilarious since it's coming from the televoters. Had it been the juries voting like that it would've been shady and you'd have cause to believe foul play was going on behind the scenes, but the fact that millions of Finns were so disciplined on the night to vote tactically like that is actually impressive.
    I can't even be mad.

I just got to say, Finland actually freaking loved Alessandra! It’s a perfect storm, every finn is just as shocked about the finnish votes as the rest of Europe. It’s truly amazing and unusual, but not some sort of nation wide conspiracy against Sweden. Some of media has behaved grossly, but Käärijä himself has been very vocal about respectibg Loreen and not standing for baseless bullying.
We always complain about neighbor voting, but also seem to take it as self evident part of Eurovision, something that SOULD happen, even if what we say out loud is the polar opposite. Nobody is entitled to any particular points. This would have been worthy of criticism if our juries had done the same - but on purpose. They did not, and it’s petty to complain about Finland when Sweden received 12 points from us anyway.

My voting behavior was shaped by social media.
As a Finn I gave most of my votes to Norway and Slovenia. The final show did not affected my points anymore, they were already decided a long before.
Alessandra and Bojan have given me along with Käärijä so much joy, laugh and happiness via social media during the Eurovision journey that it almost feld like voting a friend. It did not mattered at all that on which country they are from.
I also love their songs but I'm not sure which came first, the love for person or for the song.
The rest of votes went for Austria and Germany based on social media, interviews and reaction videos but I also love their songs.
My algorithm hasn't shown any similar good moods videos of Loreen, if it had I could have voted for her too. The only video I've seen was Melodifestivalen participants' reactions to songs from other countries, and that video gave more of a negative than a positive feeling.
I always vote for the person behind the show. In the end the song, singing ability or the country doesn't matter after I found a person that I like. I don't know if I'm the only one who thinks like this, maybe not?

And in the end I voted him to win (also voted for Croatia, Czechia, Spain and Ukraine bc great songs and performances). Ofc I also wanted Loreen to win (couldn't vote). On the other hand I had some artists that turned me off by their lack of personality or for beeing kind of arrogant (imo). But I wouldn't have voted for them anyway since the songs wasn't doing it for me (besides UK. Liked the song but she turned me off). It's interesting that likeability is so important to some of us. But I think it has been a huge factor even before social media exploded.

In the Grand Final the performances by Norway, France, and Finland, for example, were clearly better than those given in the evening for juries.
All the votes (juries and televote) should refer to the same performance, this would eliminate a factor of divergence between the jury votes and the televote.

Alessandra's jury performance, while not as good as the grand final, was not that bad. I could see her losing some points (i.e. instead of getting 1-2 points from some countries she got 0 due to being perhaps 11th rated overall by jury), but it doesn't account for the slaughter she experienced. Probably a good reminder that the biggest jury steal in esc history was when Keiino won the popular vote but ended up 6th place. For some reason, international juries largely do not want to give points to Norway even if their viewers in those same countries do.. Some could perhaps be fixed by making sure the juries are larger (at least 10 per country), that they match the viewer profile better in age/sex and so on. Also, increase votes for both tele and jury by ranking every single entry from 0 to 25 for each country. That way, countries that fall just outside the top 10 everywhere don't lose ALL the points.

"This is not about block or neighbouring voting..." In case of Sweden, no, juries from everywhere gave points to Sweden, but in vote for some other songs, we've witnessed "the neighbouring or cultural area's inclinations" (some, not all, it's still ok), both from the public and from the jury.
When we talk about juries, we know they are composed of persons appointed by the heads of their national broadcasters, and these managers are usually politically appointed, they know and meet each other at EBU's meetings and events. The world composed of national broadcasters is the world of powerful sharks by definition 😁.
It isn't "funny" when one country's vox populi differs so much from the vote of their broadcaster's "official" jury, as in Finland. It shows Finnish public strongly wanted their song to win and, eventually, people was more "strategic" about it than their jury. Finns (public) voted almost complety the opposite than their jury: Sweden got 12 points from J, 0 from P, Swiss got 10p from J, 1 from P, then they've slightly "alligned" with Czechia (a quality song with strong performance and message), 8p from J and 10 from P; 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7p from J to Portugal, UK, Belgium, Italy and France met 0p from P to all of them. They were in agreement only on Austria, rewarded by 2p by both, but 1p from J to Cyprus also matched 0 from P. All other P votes result in 0 from J: Norway (12), Australia (8), Slovenia (7), Estonia (6), Germany (5), Croatia (4) and Moldova (3). Such a huge difference is unusual, and it occurred in many other countries, too. It's difficult to say if this non-allignement of stars (paraphrasing a verse from Tattoo), between an "official" and public vote is a good or a bad sign, but to me it looks more disturbing than funny.

I didn't give any moral (good/bad, honest/dishonest), rational (smart/unwise), ideological value or a value connected with musical taste or preference, why do you think I was "biased" or lacked logical thinking?
Your statement "the public was at least 10 times more geopolitical this year than in the past" somehow connects with my "Such a huge difference (between the vote of jury and public) is unusual, and it occurred in many other countries, too." Thank you for your in-depth analysis! I love playing with numbers too.
One thing that keeps on going though my mind is: "statistical probabilities". The ESC has become so professionalised, many millions watch it, many thousands contribute to the betting odds. The most successful coutries (like Sweden and Italy) have expensive, complex and big preselection shows, and a voting system similar to that in the actual final show. Each country is perfecting their song to the most modern standards. It's all big numbers.
And statistics says: The bigger the numbers the more predictable the results. I am a bit afraid that the ESC has become the victim of its own success. Bacause everybody watches it, it becomes predictable. We actually knew the winner shortly after Sweden had voted for Loreen.
I am curious which innovations we will see in the future. I fear that if nothing changes, the ESC will stay very predictable...

I guess the geopolitics do count a lot if you're only good or average. For this reason, another marking system would probably make more sense. Why allow undue advantages with the 12 points (4 marks more if you're ranked 1st than the one ranked 3rd) when some of them are actually not meaningful, either coming from the juries or the televotes ?

For the Swedes who think that we Finns owe to vote for them, I'd just like to point out that if we count all the points through the years, Finland has received much less votes from Sweden than vice versa, and we aren't complaining about that.
As for me, I never would vote Sweden just because it's Sweden. I can vote for them, if they in my opinion have the best song, which might happen more often than in the case of some other countries, because the Swedish music is more familiar to a Finn. But this year I think Sweden just sent a rerun from the year 2012, and I wasn't touched by it. In my personal opinion the best songs beside Finland came this year from Portugal and Switzerland, so I voted for them. I also considered France beforehand, but something went wrong, so I spared my votes only to Portugal and Switzerland.

I think that the public in the Nordic countries acknowledged Israel as the biggest threat to them and therefore voted strategically in favor of the Nordic countries (meaning: didn't give any points to Israel regardless of what they actually thought about the song and the performance).
Btw, since we have a large impartial "test group" such as the ROTW voting, it is impossible statistically that the public in the Nordic countries voted "objectively" in the case of Israel since a gap of 100% from the test group (0 vs 12) is not only unlikely but rather statistical impossibility. But there's really no way to avoid such kind of bias.
In contrast, Cudos to the very fair Israeli public that did the opposite, and gave the 12P to Finland, which deserved it objectively!

But with the televote I just think there were a handful of countries that took a big chunck of it and there wasn't that much left for the rest. Portugal did really well last year and the year before that with entries that weren't exactly young and current. According to the odds from before the show.

2016: 38 points to the top 5 favourites according to the odds
    2017: 40
    2018: 20
    2019: 23
    2021: 24
    2022: 27
    2023: 0
In 2021 Finland was also in the top 5 but still gave 24 points to the other 4.
Every year since 2016 they have given points to both the winner and the favourite.

Finnish public voting tactically this ESC is the biggest argument in favor of having the juries I've seen so far. We don't want a song contest turn into some weird exercise in game theory, where each country has to think about not sending their best performer, in case they get left without votes, because they're seen as a threat. One of the jury's jobs is to stay impartial of these kind of details and take the songs at face value.
The biggest problem I see with the juries is that there's often big differences between what an expert thinks is a good song and what an average person does. As someone who works in a creative field I've seen this pattern often. The experts don't truly know what makes a good work, they know how to make or recognize certain qualities of a work that help them being good. This however causes a blindness towards other qualities the songs could have. They start to think: "When a song has this and this quality, then it's a good song. Therefore if a song doesn't have these qualities, it must be worse for it".
This format then ends up heavily favoring ballads, because they have a clear qualities related to success, that are both easy for a creator to follow and a judge to recognize.
I think I'd still like to see some exploration done towards changing the weights between the score given by the jury and the public. Something like 1 to 3 or 2 to 5.

    • @xichotl
      @xichotl Před rokem +7

I would say the presence of the juries is what inspires people to vote tactically. Everyone was talking about how Loreen would obviously win the jury vote, so I can imagine that may have inspired some people to not vote for her if they wanted to increase Käärijä's odds.
I have mixed feelings about juries personally, but I thought I'd put this possibility out there. I think the jury system needs to be reworked. Increase the number of jurors, perhaps decrese their impact, and also only consider the top ten in jury votes. Now I believe they look at the whole 26 and so if one juror puts someone first and another one last, they cancel each other out. They should also not be allowed to chat with each other while evaluating the acts. There's no way that's not influencing opinions.
