    On the 10 points from Austria for Croatia: Yes, there is a big ex-yugoslav community here, but that usually wouldn't be enough for 10 points. Really, with the Croat entry this year, it came down to cultural sensibilities. We love satire and dark humour here, and there was quite a bit of discussion in the media about how intelligent the lyrics of Let 3's song actually are. The song is a great display of conveying a message between the lines, of being very in-your-face but also very subtle. So I am not at all surprised about the 10 points

    This analysis shows how much impact block voting / regional voting / diaspora voting still has on televotes especially. It won't help a country win or even necessarily get a good result, however, it will guarantee enough points to avoid placing last. It also highlights how televoters focus on a small amount of songs, if you exclude these types of votes.

    The thing that I am most proud of for this year is me predicting our (Australia’s) jury 12 to Belgium 🇧🇪 and actually that they’d do well in the televote here as well. I did that because we just typically vote for them as a sort of historical vote thing probably because of similar musical taste and due to the fact we have to e wake up early making memorable performances stick out more to viewers who would mostly be fans I’d assume due to the inconvenience of having to wake up at 5 am (in Sydney) and as early as 3 am in Perth due to time zones (which I go through ofc). We have them 12 in 2016 and both of them are actually kind of similar because the vocal performance are quite impressive and the songs generally appeal to the juries due to them being slick pop songs and I was correct. The televote could be explained by these two reasons, similar to the jury vote, meaning I made complete sense when making that prediction making the fact that it came true super expected.

  • @CallistoTheWarriorQueen
    @CallistoTheWarriorQueen Před rokem +6

    I think there are 2 main reasons that Australia didn't do well in the televotes. One is simply that a lot of people don't think we belong in the competition because we aren't a part of Europe. The other is that a lot of Rock/Metal fans who may have spread their votes between Finland, Australia and Germany used all their votes on trying to get Finland to beat Sweden because we knew the Juries would give Sweden such a massive lead.

    About Joker Out - I'm pretty sure that if the song were in English televotes would look different. Slovenian sounds really pleasant to people speaking other slavic languages, I'm Polish and I can understand little bit of the lyrics even though I've never learnt Slovenian (and haven't heard much of it in music till now ;)) There's something 'familiar in a nice way' in the song. I voted for it myself and most of my friends who love ESC did as well. I guess it might not sound so good to western Europeans...?

    • @AammaK
      @AammaK Před rokem +3

      I'm Finnish, my family had the same though, even though there's nothing particularly familiar in the language itself for us. The Slovanian really did elavate the song, I think in english it might have had a similar faith to Malta or Azerbaijan, sadly. We speculated if the Georgian entry too could have been saved if it was in native language. The english lyrics make zero sense, which is quite distracting even if the song sounds so great otherwise. We also joked about how Germany would have gotten even higher points from us Finns if it was in German instead. And I genuinely wonder if Central Europeans might have preferred it that way also, even if metal in itself is way more everyday and familiar for the Nordics. It would have been interesting to see, hope they dare to try in the future.
      I'm so glad we had such a nice year for native language songs! I tend to like ESC enstries from the Balkans in native language, and always feel sad whenever I hear any of the songs being translated for the semifinals after national selection. I hope countries dare to keep it up and not shy away from sending something other than english. When it was mandatory to sing in one of the official languages in ESC, the Finns really did think we'd never have a chance with a Finnish song. Personally I'm dreaming of a year of all Nordics sending a native language song! Would be fire.

I would really love to see the actual numbers of individual votes. Like how many people voted in total in each country, and how much did everyone get. We don't see what's the difference between 12 and 10 points in each country. Is it a landslide or is it down to 2 people not having their phones charged and just missed the voting window.

    • @Kessra
      @Kessra Před rokem

      It would also be interesting to see how many people just watch without voting (like I do) as at times I have really troubles to understand what most people find "so appealing" in a song. Seeing that a vote costs 0.99 Cents + the cost of the SMS i.e. which varies from like 20 Cents in Germany to 1 € 19 Cents in Romania, also means dedication to particular songs or artists which I for the most part am not willing to do as most of those songs will be forgotten rather quickly after ESC anyways.

    • @sarahenchanted
      @sarahenchanted Před rokem

      personally I think yes. for example, the fact that back when Turkey was in the competition, Germany would consistently give them a high amount of televote points and there are a large amount of Turks there shows the diaspora was pretty damn powerful. Also I think if a diaspora community is big enough in X country, people who aren't in it may appreciate that culture a lot and the culture might be deep in society. This might not be a great example, but in the US we have many different diasporas from Latin America and many of their foods, music, the Spanish language, etc have become a huge part of American culture. Thus it's not impossible for let's say Polish culture to become a big part of British culture because of the diaspora having large numbers.

      @@eurovisionhistories Lithuania and Estonia supported each other maybe in 2000`s and a little bit later. But now I don`t see that. Estonia is more concentrated to Finland, Scandinavian countries. For Lithuania those countries are: Latvia, Ukraine, and I would say Poland, Georgia.

    Looking at my country Italy the televote gave 12 to Moldova we often vote them as the language is latin base and has some similarities to Italian and the ethnic sound reminds a bit of Italian folk in some regions. Jury gave Israel 12 points which was not strategic because they beat us for third place by exactly 12 points 🤣🤣🤣 So Italian jury didn't favour itself. Televote gave 10 points to Norway because Alessandra was born in Italy in fact the Rai presenter was saying that every five minutes 😂😂😂

      In general in Croatia people would always listen to Slovenian, Serbian, Italian etc. entry as soon as these are chosen. Not just Eurovision fans but also media would promote those. Just like, for instance, Slovenian TV had a long interview with Let 3 just a few days after they won Dora. In short, Croatians are always more familiar with songs from their neighbourhood, and in the case of Slovenia, although languages are pretty different, some parts of Croatia can understand Slovenian enough to get the meaning of the song

    Belgium (and overall most of this video tbh, but Belgium is downright shocking) is a reminder to those that want only televote that juries are indeed more than needed.
    You're only mad that Finland didn't win, but you forgot to care about every single other countrie's result. Y'all would've murdered Spain (which, admittedly, I would've also done, I legit am annoyed by every second of that song and I find it hard to listen to for more than 30 seconds).

    Croatia saved the producers' asses this year. The second half paled in comparison to the first and having that burst of life before the end was so important. They should have put them last or at least Moldova, but instead they shot themselves in the foot with Mae 🫠
