People usually ask for their songs that have music videos at the beginning of a reactor’s journey, and they are amazing MVs and beautiful songs, but the song that get music videos are the title tracks, so not necessarily their best songs but the more catchy to make people want to hear more. I think you would really like « First Love » on their Wings album. It’s a song dedicated to SUGA’s love for music and it is heart wrenching. The best translations are usually on doolset lyrics and there are lyric videos on CZcams if you want.

    Notes from a retired ballerina:
Swan Lake it's one of the most iconic ballets of all time. In the story, the White Swan is the protagonist and the Black Swan is the identical looking villan. Map of the Soul, the album that contains Black Swan, is based on jungian psycology and I think the Black Swan in this context represents the artist's shadow.
This concept can be aplied to any form of art. Namjoon mentioned the quote in the beggining of the video as an inspiration for writing this song. So basically, for an artist, not being able to express themselfs artisticly feels like death.
BTS reached the top of the music industry and I feel like in this song the boys are expressing the fear of losing passion for what they do. When everything is about numbers and money, what happens to true expression? What happens to the art? This deep fear is their shadow, the Black Swan.

Blake, I really appreciate that you took the time to interpret what you got from the dancing even though you were out of your comfort zone. I believe that was partially BTS' motivation in debuting the song with this art film. They wanted to underline the message and the art, rather than them on camera.
I watched this early in the morning in the dark and I sobbed. I used to be able to dance, and you could say I already died my first death due to physical inability. My way of expressing myself through dance had died. This song has become my favorite BTS song.
My second favorite is called Butterfly, so I suggest you listen to it. Butterfly Prologue Mix is the most beloved version.

In the movie Black Swan, the protagonist was denying/fighting her dark sides questioning it's existence within her with morality. Shadow can represent a lot things: your fears, your greed, lust etc. in order for her to fully show and identify her true self, she has to accept her shadow as it also part of her. The same concept was shown in this video. The main dancer was constantly fighting his shadows (as you can see, there are a lot people who played as his shadow indicating he has so many worries and fears or many sides of him that he hides from other people). In the end, they're dancing in unison implying he has accepted his shadows. And acceptance is the first step to loving yourself.

You were pretty accurate with your interpretation, it's a part of their Map of the Soul series which deals with Persona, Shadow and Ego aspects, Black swan being the main track for shadow. It would be great if you did Intro Persona, Boy With Luv, Interlude Shadow, Outro Ego and On, would give you an idea about how the album plays out and you get another solo track from J-hope plus the other rappers RM and Suga. Also, RM writes a large part of BTS's songs including Black Swan, he mentioned in his live chat how difficult it was for him to write it, so you might also like his solo Wildflower which also talks about his struggle with success.

BTS debut in 2013 and, for the most part, have had multiple album releases each year. They also tour most of the year. Between making new music, learning choreography, filming music videos, and doing their various online shows, I would be surprised if, within a year, they even had a month off. The rap line (SUGA, J-Hope, and RM) are the most involved lyrics and production wise out of the whole group. You said in one video that there are probably thousands of songs we will never hear, and you are absolutely right. We know this because BTS and the members release free songs and albums on SoundCloud as gifts for us ARMYs. In their latest album PROOF, an anthology album, they even released the demos of some of the songs they have released. Some sound like completely different songs than the final product. BTS have always been vocal about some of their struggles with mental health. In one award show, they even mentioned almost disbanding because of it. In a live stream, they announced their temporary hiatus as a group but not as individuals. Although this was partly due to a law in South Korea in which every able body male must serve in the Korean army for about 2 years before they are 30, it wasn't the only or main reason. The leader, RM, broke down and talked about how they were just so burned out. To the point that nothing would come out anymore. Sorry for the information overload, but you are absolutely right in your analysis of this song.

one of their idols is Epik high. Epik high was not doing good in their career so they released an album called SWAN SONGS. One of the members of Epik High said that in literature, the last cry/song of a swan before it dies is the most beautiful. Ironically, this album made them popular so their career didn't end. One of the songs that inspired the BTS rappers to rap was their song FLY in this album. Anyways, RM once said that he watched the movie BLACKSWAN for this song and in that movie the protagonist (playing the swan in the ballet) dies while performing her best performance before dying. At this point in their career, BTS was becoming huge, and doubted whether they can keep up artistically with the fame. This song says "Would This be my first death, I've been always afraid of?....what if the moment is right now?" referring to the quote of the first death of an artist by choreographer Martha Graham: “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.”

About this performance video. In it, seven dancers dressed in black-one, shirtless, is the black swan-tell the emotional story of the song. The six, fully clothed dancers are at turns the swan’s inner demons, his tormentors, his prison, and eventually, his wings, as they knock him down, tread on him, chase him, and keep him inside a cage made of beams of light.
Briefly, the black swan attempts to leave his demons behind, separating himself from the other dancers, seemingly packing his bird-like motions away during a decrescendo of the string section. He walks as a human might, as if to exit the mall, in near-silence. But just as artists like BTS cannot separate themselves from their fears, the music returns full-throated, as do the dancers. This time, the black swan calmly accepts the darkness inherent in his nature. He returns to bird-like movements, introducing both a literal and figurative inversion and commanding the other dancers rather than being consumed by them. Once his tormentors and inner demons, the other dancers now become his wings, helping him mount to the sky

I always kind of thought of the dancers in black as embodying the fears, doubts, burdens of fame that BTS deals with. And that bit at the end where they lift the main dancer is them using those things as something to rise above, tools to keep going. And as for the location, I read somewhere it was an unfinished abandoned mall.

Black Swan is from the ballet 'Swan Lake', a very dark Rusian Folktale. The 2011 movie 'Black Swan' is about your own darkness, When your passion, what you love to do, is destroying you. The protagonist is so exhausted and stressed that dance becomes her hell. And his demons, his shadows, are all in her mind. The shadows chase the white swan, until they become part of him turning black.
This song is part of a trilogy of conceptual albumes based on the Joung Archetypes and the psychology book Map of the Soul.
It is related to the Shadow archetype. (Shadow, person, Ego).
For some BTS songs it is good to know the context, most of their albumes are conceptual and the songs are in a certain order because tell a story.

I appreciate your willingness to go beyond where you're comfortable. For what it's worth, you were connecting with the dance just fine. You don't need to understand dance to appreciate it any more than you need to understand painting to appreciate a work of art - or to understand production to appreciate music. 😁
I'm not trying to convert you to loving dance as an art form or anything, just, maybe, giving you permission to let yourself enjoy it.
I love this version of Black Swan. It's so uncomfortable... Which makes sense for the concept. The emotions of the song really come through in the dance and the changed instrumentation. If you dig into the music, it essentially breaks apart until it's silent in the middle.
I mentioned it in another comment, but I think you might enjoy following this one up with On. It's their answer to Black Swan's question, and it's a very good song. And the most popular video for it is actually not the official MV, it's a dance version. I think you'd find that dance pretty accessible 😁

It'd help to know that this song is a part of the Map of the Soul album, and is one of the representations of the Shadow section. You're right, the shadows (doubt/fear/burnout) is something the swan is fighting off at first until it realised that it can be worked with and accepted to become a part of oneself that can make them even stronger and better. If we accept the darkest parts of ourselves as a part of us instead of something we fight against, we become a better version of ourselves. Artists die twice, the song is about the fear of the approaching first death. We love it so much ^^

  • @marinal.
    @marinal. Před rokem +1

Hi I am back. Good reaction, ty. BTS share different themes in this song. One is burn out or the loss of passion. They have been out here almost 10 yrs. They only had vacation twice in all that time. If u don't live what can u write about. U know. Being an idol is run, run, run. And so RM and Suga who write the most for the group as well as others ... it just became really painful for them. They needed a rest. Plus, a whole lot was going on with their military enlistment. So much stress. They talk about some of this in last year's Festa Dinner. It was hard to watch. I cried for a week. I hate seeing them hurting.
Yes, the half naked guy is the Black Swan. He moves like a bird because he is one. Black swan is a movie based on a book. This one has beautiful deep meaning of their lyrics. As you notice like lines " It would be my first death. That's what I'm afraid of ." It has that emotional theme of an artist fear for losing their passion for what they do. With this song BTS dives deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden. The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. The very moment they come face to face with the ‘Black Swan’ within themselves, however, they are stricken with a paradoxical realization that music is all they have. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself. It's also inspired from Martha Graham, who said “A dancer dies twice once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” Now with the band on a break from group work and focusing more on solo projects (solo albums). We know this was also a hint to us that they were struggling. Stay safe. - 2019 ARMY NY USA 💜

Black Swan ballet: changing from white to black swan - growing up, losing innocence.
Black Swan movie - sacrificing mental and physical health to reach the top.
    Shadow/mirror images - self reflection.
Black Swan: Mainly written by RM, the one you like, is about their fears of losing all passion for music, either writing it or performing on stage. It's also based on a quote by Martha Graham who was an important figure in the world of modern dance, "A dancer dies twice. Once when they stop dancing and this death is more painful." They've been doing this for a long time now and for some of them it's all they've ever done from a young age but realized music is their life.
    MsBeatrice_81 said on 3/19/22
Fun fact: Before BTS began doing it, it wasn't normal at all for Korean idol groups to release songs with deeper meanings, discuss serious topics in their songs, acknowledge issues of vulnerability like burnout, depression or mental illness. It wasn't normal for idols to open up about their personal troubles at all. In fact, doing so got some idols thrown out of their companies. It was also not normal or common to have a running storyline/theme that is carried through multiple albums and/or MVs and songs. But BTS did it all so successfully, and broke those stigmas, to the point that now many other Korean idol groups have started trying to do those things, with varying degrees of sincerity and success.
This song, its lyrics and MV are part of the "Shadow" portion of BTS's Map of the Soul era, in which they released albums and songs based on Carl Jung's theories regarding the Persona, Shadow, and Ego. This track is an exploration of their "shadow" selves' fear that they may someday lose their passion for their art - they ask if perhaps they are already losing it- and they wonder what comes after that "first death" of the loss of passion. In the end, they continue to fight for their passion and their art, claiming they won't be swept away by these fears again. I would encourage you to think about how counter-cultural BTS is being in songs like this: Not only are they dealing with topics that were taboo only a few years ago, but they're being unbelievably personally vulnerable, sincere and open. This is why we love them so much, and I'm sure you will, too! 💜
Example: A couple of weeks ago Jimmy Fallon had BTS on his late night show. They performed a song called Idol at This Idol performance at Gyeongbokgung Palace as a background and wearing hanboks. IT IS ABOUT MUSICAL BURN OUT
Sometimes he flows with his own shadows sometimes he is being held back or get traped by them, so this conveys the stugless of being an artist who is at the top of their fame and has to learn to live a life dealing with those demons (expectations of making better music everytime is just one of them) as u said. They will never go away bcs theyre part of you. You can sometimes rely on them too and make them sway with you, not let them dominate your whole persona but rather use them in your favor (inspiration that comes from struggles) bcs as sometimes is being said 'the best art comes from pain' and that quote simply represents BTSs journey as a group (For the ones who know their history and even their current situation.)

If black swan is the pain n dark side of the artist/musician for losing their passion for their art, there is another song from BTS about the joy n crazy side of the artist/musician making their art as if as they are being drunk for their art creation. But among the joy, it still have a pain of creation for making the art. The title is "Dionysus". The genre is more to rock
They use Dionysus (the god of wine n party in greek myth) as mirrored with musican/artist. Dionysus put his effort to make the finest wine and he get drunk with his wine. While musician/artist put their effort to make finest art and they being drunk with their art creation. Dionysus have a party every night until dawn, while musician/artist having party at their studio every night until dawn.

Any creative mind experiences burnout at one point or another and the fear of never being able to create again. For me, the dancers in black are the art form, at first dancing with the lead dancer, his first wings. They cage him and he starts to feel his art imprisoning him, resenting it and the wings that do nothing to help him escape. He tears them off, desperate for a breath of freedom. Once he escapes, he flees and there is a sense of relief and power followed by a loneliness as the lead realizes he's now alone. He goes down the escalator and it feels like something is missing in this quiet world. He is an ordinary man now. When the art comes back, he fights it. It is a fear of being imprisoned again but it is also a desperation to not be alone again. This is its own prison. There's turmoil and a frantic beating of wings as he tames it and bends it to his will, regaining his freedom, this time with his art. It is a part of him, the wings once more in harmony with him as they raise him up. A lovely reassurance that burnout does not mean the artist has died their first death.

They made the song inspired by the movie Black Swan. The key point is to face your own deep inner self. That's why these lyrics came out.
...Deeper. Yeah I think I'm goin' deeper. Inside I saw myself, myself...
If you watch the movie Black Swan, this song will be more impressive.

When they have performed this live in concert BTS uses a variation of the orchestral version, before transitioning to the MV official” version it’s so so beautiful and unexpected. One of the most visually interesting things they have done and shows their love of art in all forms. RM in particular spends all his free time touring art museums around the world (so much that’s he’s got a huge reputation now as any exhibit he visits gets an instant boost from Army exposure and will be an ongoing hit… so much so in just Korea they’ve started saying there are two categories of museums those he has visited and those he hasn’t). He also owns he’s a huge amount of art and has done an art tour of his house which is filled with paintings and sculptures. All of BTS paint and obviously dance etc. they just love art.

I don't know if people told you this. But this is very important to know..
Black swan is from the Map of the soul:7 album which was based on the book JUNG'S MAP OF THE SOUL by Murray Stein. Its a book on Jungian Psychology.
There are 3 ideas taken from book: PERSONA, SHADOW and EGO.
Boy With Luv is about the Persona
Likewise, Black Swan is about BTS'S Shadow.
And ON is about integrating the shadow with the EGO.
The themes are more directly explored in the songs: INTRO PERSONA by rm, INTERLUDE SHADOW by suga and OUTRO EGO by jhope.
Which is the intro, interlude and outro of the MAP OF THE SOUL:7 album.
PERSONA is the external mask one wears while interacting with the world.
SHADOW is the repressed part of our personality hidden away in the unconsciousness. It is repressed cus these parts, if let out could damage our idea of the self and taint our persona.
EGO is the conscious idea of the self. Our Ego is the one repressing the Shadow so that our external image(Persona) can be protected, therefore protecting the external world from our unwanted parts.
Shadow often is our deepest fears or parts we hate about ourself.
For example a gay person may repress the fact hat he is gay in a society that does not accept homosexuality. This will end up being his shadow which is part of his unconscious self. But since he is denying a part of himself this shadow grows and then lashes out into the world in other forms.
So in order to be a healthy human being he need to bring out this shadow and accept it as part of his idea of the self (ego).
So Black swan is about that but from a musicians perspective.
BTS had this fear that they may loose interest in music. But since they are public celebrities with a certain image(like in boy with luv), them admitting this might be painful for the world to hear.
But if this fear stays repressed it might grow into some sort of hatred of themselves.
So it's them bringing out this shadow of Fear in order to heal.
A musician admitting that they are afraid they may loose interest in music.
In this podcast I linked below at about the 38 minute mark Murray Stien the author of the book himself breaksdown this art film and the Martha Graham quotes meaning. Give it a listen if you are interested.

BTS music and videos are open to interpretation, my interpretation of this video is that it is the BTS story. At first he was behind and ignored (by the Kpop industry, )then he started doing things differently. He gets attacked for being different and dragged back to the pack. (The lasers. )Again he gets attacked until he breaks free and runs by himself. He learns how to be strong and then goes down to face the others. He gets attacked by them again but can fight them off this time.
He then has to face the people who want to bring him down (haters , media etc..) but he can defend himself and overcomes the attacks. Lastly he shows KPoP what he is doing and the others follow him (braking into the US). Then they all try to copy the moves but he is way ahead of them and will always fly higher.
Just what l see when watching this video. You probably don’t know the BTS story of how they were treated badly and held down, How they went against the system and fought so hard to succeed.

I'm very new to BTS. Heard V sing a Christmas song while holding his cute dog. So a few months. Immersing myself in their videos, music and crazy fun.
I watched your other one. I love contemporary dance. Not a trained dancer, but love dancing in the moonlight. I believe women need to release toxins from their cells with body movement of some kind. Men could benefit from this practice. I'm typing this after listening the first time with sound on. Mute because methinks thou doth protest too much. What you resist, persists. Sorry, couldn't help it. Music to me is more dance than thought. Just imagine what could be.
I actually was raised by 2 logical thinkers. My Father could do math in his head but he did play piano by ear. My Mother loved nutrition and was a nurse. I just hung out in the woods with my horse and wrote little songs. Sang for myself but learning some body movement did help to free me from insecurity. Good luck to you.

This version is just a bit different and hits different because the music is orchestral. This story is also about burnout. The story of the dance is a swan whose wings feel like a prison to him he feels the wings are holding him back and he is trying to escape them but can't. In the end he learns that his wings themselves are his way of flying and journeying away. It reminds me of a saying: That which others see as beauty in us, feel like a prison to us. So many times we find that which is our talent, the thing that binds us and makes us stifled at times.

It’s ten tracks and about 30mins. Fireworks (lead single) and Still Life with Anderson Paak have music videos, but RM says the album is intended to be listened to in order. He covers a lot of genres. I believe the dance group did this dance in an old shopping Mall or parkade.
But two things... a lot of their movements are meant to emulate scenes from the movie...and the flogging his back you mentioned at the beginning of your review becomes explained clearly in the movie...

Not so much about fame… more about the loss of passion or inspiration in one’s art (hence, my first death). Blake has it right when he interprets it as musical burnout. The silence at the bottom of the ocean is an internal state. After prolific creativity and intense touring for 7 years, our artists felt drained and badly needed new direction and energy.

This MV is how BTS introduced the song and album Map Of The Soul:7 to the world and ARMY.
