    • @rafaelsmith5737

@@BlakeMakesMusic The line "FILM ME NOW" means "immortalize the moment"
      (Film - capture the moments)
If you're an artist and you know you're slowly losing your passion, the only thing you can do is cherish your remaining time or "capture" the moments where you still have that burning passion
Hence the term "film me now"
If you notice, there's this lines that goes:
      Do your thang
Do your thang with me now
      What's my thang?
What's my thang tell me now
      Yeah yeah
The "thang" is literally any action that makes you passionate
Or in simpler terms, it's your passion
If you're a painter, then your "thang" is to paint
If you're an actor, your "thang" is to act
If you're a singer, then your "thang" is to sing
      So basically, in that song
BTS is asking you, to do what your "thang" with them
      Do your thang
Do your thang with me now
But the next line is saddest part in this song
      What's my thang?
What's my thang tell me now
      Yeah yeah
Cause it's literally the feeling of EVERYONE when they slowly lose their passion
It's like you're getting old, cause you can't even remember the "things" you are passionate about but you still desperately clung into it
In the first verse they had already shown their fear, the loss of passion for music is literally like "DEATH" to them:
Ay, my heart no longer races
      When hearing the music play
      Tryna pull up
Oh, that would be my first death
      I've been always afraid of
      Every sounds has been cut
      Killin' me now
Killin' me now, do you hear me yeah?
No songs can no longer affect me
      Crying out a silent cry
Although this song is quite dark cause it's literally BTS openly admitting that they are slowly losing their passion for music
But this particular line completely changes it's meaning
      "What's my thang"
"What's my thang tell me now"
Cause it means even if that's the case they are slowly falling out with music, they are still not willing to give up
      "Nothing can devour me"
"I shout out with all my might"

This is indeed about musical burnout. It falls in the ‘shadow’ theme of their Map of the Soul album series, which explores the Jungian psychological archetypes ‘persona’, ‘shadow’, and ‘ego’.
Although this song was released in early 2020, we as fans didn’t fully appreciate the depth of its significance to the members until their livestream with ARMY for Festa 2022 which elicited a lot of tears from both the members and ARMYs worldwide).
The ‘black swan’ reference is to the movie Black Swan about a ballerina, based in the context of her performing the ballet Swan Lake (which is a tragic love story involving an enchanted human/white swan and a human black swan), but the movie itself is deeply psychological and too much to explain here.

“Black Swan” is inspired by a quote: “A dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful”. “Black swan” is about their fear that some day they’ll lose their passion for music and this would be their first death.
They chose to use autotune in this song was to show the group's shadow (they're deepest collective fears/secrets) vocally, the fear being that they would fall out of love with their craft. It was RMs idea to use the autotune to blend their voices, (which makes sense since he adores Kanye and Kanye uses autotune on his vocals). Black swan is based on Jung's work of the map of the soul where the shadow, ego and persona (and more) are all equally important parts to a person's construct. The dance moves in particular you can see in the beginning they pluck what seems to be invisible string instruments, while at the end of the choreography they seem to be hanging by those very strings like puppets. Their shadow (fear/secret) has consumed them.
Ok, so... the song draws inspiration from both the ballet (Swan Lake) in it's choreo and imagery, but also draws a lot of inspiration from the movie "Black Swan", which in turn is heavily based on the Japanese anime film "Perfect Blue". Both movies break identity and deal (in a non-obvious way) with Carl Jung's theory of the self: Persona, Ego, Shadow. In these movies, a female performer spirals into insanity as increased pressures in her career cause her to lose grip of herself and reality. “Black Swan” tells the story of Nina, a passionate ballerina (Natalie Portman) who struggles to maintain her sanity while competing for the main role (the White Swan, Odette) in “Swan Lake.” Meanwhile, “Perfect Blue” follows Mima, a former (Japanese) pop idol whose sense of reality begins to waiver as she attempts to transition into a career as a serious actress. Both stories feature a female protagonist is put in highly stressful situations and that makes them question their identity and ultimately conjure up a doppelgänger that messes with their psyche (persona, shadow and ego, basically clash). Just as Nina suffers from the pressures of being a ballerina, Mima is also forced to deal with the strict expectations of being a Japanese idol. Their personal conflicts also bleed into their professional lives causing them to spiral out of control. In Nina’s case, it comes in the form of her oppressive mother and in Mima’s situation, it’s an obsessive stalker fan. At the core of the film, both protagonists have a psychological battle with themselves that results in hallucinations that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. In the end, like I said, these films break the self and deal with themes like loss of passion and the heartbreak that come with working for your dreams. Black Swan (BTS), at its core, reflects these themes. I think that Perfect Blue can be chillingly on point for BTS, since they too are idols and experience some of the things that Mima experienced as an idol and continues to go through. BTS reflect the core concepts of these movies, identity, and conceptualise them to reflect their fear of losing their passion for music and, by extension, losing themselves. They portray people who are afraid that music is all there is to them and are afraid of losing themselves if they lose their passion.
This song became even more heartbreaking for us after their FESTA Dinner 2022, when they announced they’re taking a break from making music as a group. They expressed that they had been feeling lost and unsure of their identity as a group since the MOTS: 7 (this song’s album) release and the plan to take a break had been in place since then. They planned on having their world tour (MOTS Tour, which got canceled due to COVID-19) and then taking a break to work on their solo music, not only to find their unique flavour as artists, but also to rekindle their passion for music. Reading the lyrics for Black Swan, it makes sense that RM cried after writing this song. It expresses their fears at the time, how they felt like they no longer had an identity and feared they’d die if they lost their passion for music.
And ohhhh boy, Jimin's dance haha he did train in ballet, albeit very minimally and as part of his main focus, which was contemporary and that's what he mostly trained for during high school. He is "professionally" trained in contemporary, hip-hop and idol dance. Even the members have said that Black Swan is Jimin's song, that he embodies the black swan. This is further highlighted in the 2020 MAMA version of Black Swan, where he does a duet with Jungkook! (here's the link for a breakdown of the moment twitter.com/mintynkks/status/1335236325373448192?s=20&t=2C90i3inGV9MBv5dgoiYQA & twitter.com/sopeshopes/status/1567652963367239680?s=20&t=7xjj1LVpvBUJbNtYOWfnMg… Spoiler alert, since I dunno if you plan to react to the 2020MAMA performance. Which I HIGHLY recommend, it has an amazing performance of Dynamite as well). Anygays, Jimin's dance style is unique and probably near impossible to replicate since its highly influenced by his 8+ years experience in martial arts + hiphop training. +idol training + his contemporary (and minimal ballet and Korean traditional) training. He does a lot of tricking and aerials you could see with his medialuna (which is a very dangerous movement to do, because you can easily over rotate and injure your ankles) and with his movements here twitter.com/pjmgem/status/1466261374355402757?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA and here twitter.com/jikookheart/status/1465173437589110788?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA, during the live performance, where he basically does a one-handed cartwheel to cover more space. I always tell people instead of looking at BTS like a typical boy band, look at them as 7 individual artists who are also a group. I can't imagine BTS any other way except with these 7 young men and each one of them bring something special to the group that can't be replaced. The fact that all 7 of them can work on solo projects and they celebrate each other's successes and no one gets a big ego or jealous. And that's why BTS will last a long time if that's what they want to do. They are more than a group or even friends, they consider each other family. And I can't speak for anyone else but what you said hit the nail right on the head for me. I used to love so much music growing up and then something changed and I thought it was just me getting older and not liking modern music anymore. Everything was so vulgar with no meaning or heart, every performance I watched was all about shock value with people who are half naked onstage. So much profanity used in songs and songs about partying 24/7, constantly getting drunk/high, sleeping around, being rich etc. stuff I just couldn't relate to. I really thought I would never like another current music artist again until BTS came along. They were like a breath of fresh air to me. Performances that reminded me of the days of me watching Michael Jackson. Music that actually talked about what so many of us go through no matter our age or backgrounds. Their music really just encompassed everything I wanted in a music artist. And while BTS do occasionally curse in their music it's not overdone which I think makes the cursing more impactful when they do decide to curse in songs. BTS helped me discover my love for music again and I'm so thankful to them.

one of their idols is Epik high. Epik high was not doing good in their career so they released an album called SWAN SONGS. One of the members of Epik High said that in literature, the last cry/song of a swan before it dies is the most beautiful. Ironically, this album made them popular so their career didn't end. One of the songs that inspired the BTS rappers to rap was their song FLY in this album. Anyways, RM once said that he watched the movie BLACKSWAN for this song and in that movie the protagonist (playing the swan in the ballet) dies while performing her best performance before dying. At this point in their career, BTS was becoming huge, and doubted whether they can keep up artistically with the fame. This song says "Would This be my first death, I've been always afraid of?....what if the moment is right now?" referring to the quote of the first death of an artist by choreographer Martha Graham: “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.”

Him: Is this song about musical burnout?
    Me: YAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
Black Swan is a reference Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" ballet. It also takes from famous ballerina, Martha Graham's quote, “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” As someone that danced ballet/Hip Hop and Jazz all throughout childhood and stopped I understand the pain in this quote. Also as a singer I understand the depth of this quote. Any artist can understand the chasm sometimes between your love for art and your mind, that often plays tricks on you. It is very much part of being an artist and a human being. I'm so glad that this song resonated with you. I had a feeling it would so I'm glad you took Army up on the suggestion of checking it out. There is plenty of depth to the MV. I'm not sure if you noticed but there was a lot of references to the shadow. a common theme throughout the Map of the Soul era. I'd suggest checking out some explanation videos on this song. Helped me to connect even more to it. And, yes, some will happily listen to anything these boys put out but most of us have a pretty wide range of musical and life interests and find meaning in their music and lyrics that enrich our daily lives. We're also vocal when we're not happy with a song. The boys put a lot of pressure on themselves to make the next album even better than the last.
I got sucked in by J-hope's dancing but Black Swan made me Army. I felt the depth of that song from the very beginning and as an artist it struck at my core. You may wanna check out the PTD live performance of it. Was my favorite of all the songs of the PTD tour.

Bang Shi Hyuk, the man who created BTS has said that from the beginning he didn’t put any restrictions on the boys. They could create whatever kind of music they wanted, but his one condition was that, “Their songs had to tell the story of their inner selves.” And that has been something they have always done even though their inner selves have changed a lot since they debuted as teenagers (Jungkook was only 15 ) through their 20s, and now on the brink of entering their 30s. And I think that their stories will continue to change, which is why BTS will never become stagnant or irrelevant, and their inner struggles are similar to what everyone experiences, so they can strike a chord with a larger audience.

This song was released in early 2020 off their album Map of the Soul: 7 and BTS were due to go on a world tour in 2020 and after their tour they were going to start enlisting in the military for their mandatory service. Then the pandemic happened and everything they had planned to promote their album was cancelled and the entire tour was postponed (eventually cancelled). During the pandemic they did their best to keep fans spirits high by doing online concerts, releasing 3 fully English songs to spread positivity, and made their album BE which BTS talked about their thoughts and feelings about the pandemic. BTS were still hoping the pandemic wouldn't last too long and they would be able to tour 1 last time before enlisting but unfortunately it never happened. Eventually they did get to perform in person concerts again in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Seoul, South Korea. But during their annual festa to celebrate their anniversary as a group last year they revealed how burnt out they were and they just needed a break to find themselves as people and as artists. They had spent pretty much every day over the last 10 years together and constantly working and only having 2 extended breaks that whole time. They also lived with each other and it wasn't until last year that they all moved into their own houses. So yes this song is about the fear of one day losing their passion and love for music.

This song really got to me the first time I heard it. I am a 54 yr old woman that, before I heard BTS, listened to Rock, Heavy metal, and the like for 50 years and I was feeling so burned out on all the music I used to love. That did feel like a death in so many ways. Music has always been my escape and a pick me up but it wasn't anymore. BTS gave me back my love of music and now I can even go back and hear my old favorites in a new light, BTS finds you when you need them the most. They really do! I will always be thankful to BTS for giving me a reason to love music again! Great reaction!

Most of ARMY has found a BTS song that speaks to us, one that we have a special connection to. Often, more than one. I've lost count of the number of people that I've heard say that BTS saved their lives, usually because they found a song that gave them strength and support when they needed it most. I got Covid in early 2020 and it was asymptomatic, but it had adjusted my body chemistry, which I was unaware of. I started getting major headaches, so bad that I began throwing up from the pain. One day it got so bad that I ended up on the floor, sitting in my own vomit and on the verge of just giving up. Life was too difficult and too painful and there was a lot of work to do to clean myself and everything up, while I was still sick and in pain. A BTS song started going through my head, on loop. I was so out of it that I can't remember which song, but it gave me the strength to get myself up, get everything cleaned up and get to the hospital. I ended up being admitted. A medication that I'd been on for over three years was not being absorbed by my body the way it had been and it was driving my blood pressure up to critical levels, even causing a series of mini strokes. That moment, sitting in my floor, was a turning point for me. I could do nothing, which would have led to my death, literally, or I could fight to get up and get help. Because of BTS, I chose to get up and there are thousands of people with similar stories, where they had to make a choice and BTS gave them the strength to choose life. We aren't exaggerating when we say that BTS has saved our lives. They even have a song, "Louder Than Bombs" that acknowledges how much they have helped people. Their song, "Bulletproof: Eternal" touches on how much ARMY has done for them, in return. ARMY even created a song called, "Seven Reasons" to explain why we're still waking with them. They are a lot more than just a boy band or even a music group to us. I'm glad that you're learning that for yourself, but at the same time, I wish that you didn't have such pain in your life. Borahae.

The biggest difference I personally have felt when it comes to BTS is THE fact that they speak to every ONE. The words hit differently for each of us and yet speaks to each of us! When I try to explain my attraction to their music, I always state, that it makes me want to learn! Learn the meaning behind their words, the symbolism used in their MVs, how and who originated the song.. and yes the instrumentals are damn catchy!! BTS is a group that has no age, sex, race, religion barriers! Their style is always changing and growing. This group have always hyped up other groups, solo artists, and themselves. They're the group I've been searching for without knowing how disjointed I felt from the music industry!

YES 💜 YES 💜 YES!!! I am so glad you found the song that speaks to you. I was one of the ones in the beginning who was tying to explain their music in relation to actual art. 🖼️ Your thoughts ring true to me. And when I found BTS thru their cover of I’ll Be Missing You 13 months ago, MY appreciation of them quickly centered around all the tired old girls, drugs, sex, violence, blah blah blah songs that seem to win Grammys every year. It is SO refreshing to listen to music that is actually about SOMETHING REAL. There’s nothing wrong with those songs… they are just not relatable after a awhile. I’m happy for everyone popping bottles & bitches on the daily, but enough already.
And BTS is what they sing and present. They are good people. Empathetic, kind, generous and funny. I knew if you kept trying them, you would find your open door. I’m a writer, and to me this song is about all artistic burnout.
So happy you found this. Thanks for the reaction. 🎉

You got it right. It is about musical burnout. This song was my introduction to BTS in May of 2021, though it was released in 2020. I loved the artistic quality of it - musically, visually, and the lyrics as well. Then I found out it was based on a movie of the same name where a ballerina couldn't dance anymore (her first death) which is said to be worse than real death - when you lose your passion for your art. I believe BTS have been going through that as a group but we didn't really find that out until their 2022 Festa Dinner when they announced they would be taking a break for group music and focusing on solo work, and we later found out they would also be performing their mandatory military service in South Korea one by one. So far only Jin enlisted in Dec 2022, but they are all expected to do so once their solo efforts are completed. They've been going at this hard since pre-debut (debut was June 13, 2013) with only 2 breaks as of the end of 2019. Then the pandemic hit and they stuck together through that as well. They have not disbanded, but they are trying to live a life they haven't been able to in the past, gain more experiences and get back that passion that was getting buried (at least for some of them). Great observation and reaction. If you get to know BTS' back story, you may become more obsessed with these guys (as I have). Also, I find it refreshing that their songs have more meaning than just dating, doing the "thing", etc. etc. I'm older and kind of over all that stuff (sad to say I guess). I've always gravitated to artists that write deeper lyrics while also sounding great, no matter the genre. Example, Avi Kaplan is another one and totally different. Crosby, Stills and Nash were a favorite for a long, long time. Simon and Garfunkel, poets for sure, back in the day. Showing my age now. lol Anyway, now I'm ARMY Forever, BTS Forever!

They are honest, genuine, clever, musical masterpieces. It's to the point where I am mostly repulsed by mainstream pop music, and other kpop and really only listen to bts, and maybe few other artists. I think you nailed exactly why they are different and why their music is so good and why they completely deserve the success they have, and honestly should be recognised more for their stellar songwriting and musical compostions, song topics along with their performance abilities, wit, humour, team work, passion, humility and grit.

Watching you connect with this song to the point where you stopped analysing it and just sank into the experience - it was so beautiful. I appreciated your vulnerability, and I think most ARMY folks will. We love sincere emotion. Thank you for sharing it with us.
It's about their fear of losing their passion for music, for art. It was a very real fear, that they've talked about more since then. They gave BTS their twenties and at least some of them felt like if the music was gone they wouldn't know who was left.
I haven't seen your work before, I don't think, so I don't know what else you've seen, but On serves as the answer to Black Swan. It has two videos, both of them interesting, and I think you'd enjoy it from a production perspective - but it's also just good to counter the shadow.
And just personally - I don't think you need to react to it, but I really think you should listen to Suga's song First Love. There's a live performance in Tokyo that I think is the best. He's onstage with a piano beside him and it's more of a poem than anything else. I think you'll connect with it very deeply and I suspect you'll find it almost a healing experience... I know I do.

I first heard Black Swan after reaching a point of burnout where I felt those things were slipping away - if not gone altogether. What do you do when the thing you felt passionate about, that had always defined you, no longer brings you joy? When the well of inspiration runs dry? This song hit that feeling all too well for me. Also 'Blue and Grey'. I love both those songs, but I love even more that they went on to create many more.

The "film it out" line explaination. They did write this as others said in 2020 that was the year they were suppose to go on hiatus because they had been going since the debut for 7 years. They wrote most of their songs from 2015 til 2020 so 5 years they wrote songs while they were in concert. They had missed holidays, birthdays, family time for 7 years. They were in 2020 extremely tired. They poured their souls out to write these songs for 'Map of the Soul 7'. They had said they even thought of breaking up because of emotional drama in 2018 so this is 2 years after that. So they were not only physically tired but emotionally tired. They felt the burden of their fame as if they were in the bottom of an ocean and they couldn't even hear anymore because of that burden except for film it now. They were tired, exhausted, drained and all they heard was film it now, film it now. Then they say "do your thang, what's my thang". This song is extemely emotional and just so sad.
Black Swan is a reference to the movie "Black Swan" which is a ballet called "Black Swan" about a dancer that has come to the end of her career and not being able to let go and end the end losing herself. So at the beginning of the classical dance there is a saying by a famous choreographer Martha Graham - A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.

I’ve always personally interpreted the “film it now” line as a way to express how even though they are at their lowest, darkest place creatively, they still feel the pressure to create. The line speaks of artists who are taking advantage of every single moment they can to produce, this is them realizing they can make at least one thing out of this emptiness. “Film it now” they say urgently as this might be the last thing they do before they burn out. And so Black Swan was made.

  • @ralphy383

The song is interpreted through several lenses all at once because its based on several things all at once.
    1. The Jungian concept of the repressed Shadow.
Their albums Map of the Soul Persona and 7 are both based on 'Jung's Map of the Soul' by Murray Stein, a text about Jungian concepts.
    2. The FEAR of loosing love for your art
    3. The movie black swan.
    4. Artistic burnout.
    5. BTSs military service which they were planning to do.
Film it now is definitely referring to 'record this moment so that I can see it forever'.

Black Swan I think is referencing the show Black Swan, which why the music video is in a theater and why the dancing is more contemporary. It is also why they have a ballet and orchestra version of this song. Like others have said, it is inspired about, by the legendary dancer, Martha Graham's quote, that “a dancer dies twice-once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” BTS relate this song to their art and their passion for music...

@@Anne-pd2hk Untrue. There are references in the visual.
For example when Jin turns around and his mirror images don't. Not to mention the obvious ballett references.
The movie is based on the ballett piece "Swan Lake":
The fairytale is simple: A prince finds a lake with white swans on it who turn into women at dusk. He falls for the princess and promises her loyalty. The wizard who cursed her to be a swan during the day is unhappy. So he turns his daughter into the "black swan". Unable to see the difference the prince dances with her, breaking his vow. The princess kills herself. (not sure if he does, too)
What makes it special is that traditionally the prima ballerina dances both the white and the black swan. Both needs to be danced with entirely different emotions which makes it very hard.
That is also the challenge that drives the MC of the movie insane: the exploration of her "dark" side to understand her role as the "black" swan as the "white" swan is "easy" compared for her.
The duality plays into the "shadow" aspect coming from their "white" "persona" part.
Because it is the "shadow" we fear, that hurt us and what we wish did not exist, the stuff we even hide from ourself in the unconscious part of ourself.
In their case: the loss of passion for their art.

But then you will die if you stop doing what you love. It’s complicated and BTS channels it and understands. This song is a masterpiece. This is why their fan base ARMY loves them.

Thanks for your reaction, you nailed the meaning of the song... Specially becaused You can personally relate to it.
The “Black Swan” performances represent BTS acknowledging their deepest fears and choosing instead to use those fears to grow creatively.
The song was inspired by Martha Graham's phrase: "a dancer dies twice - when he stops dancing, and this death is the most painful"
The song refers to the internal struggle of an artist falling out of love with their art. The song lends voice to the band’s darkest fears-the music they do will one day cease to touch or move them. Yet, every time they come face to face with this “Black swan” within themselves, they hear voices calling out from deep within their hearts and are stricken with the realization that music is all they have. This track is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself. At the same time, it represents the hope and internal strength that we must have to hold on to what has made us feel alive at some time, not to give up, only we will be able to face our shadows and stop being our worst enemy.
Also they song was inspired by the 2010 Darren Aronofsky film of the same name and, in turn, the ballet Swan Lake. In the film, a ballerina performing Swan Lake is tormented by her visions of a dark version of herself as she squares off against a rival, her understudy, who aims to replace her. During a livestream with fans, RM shared that he rewatched the film to write the song, saying he cried several times throughout the process.
Bringing their audience into such a deeply personal fear is standard for Bangtan, who have made it a point to comfort their fans by sharing their own human struggles. Still, that makes it no less powerful for them to share such a vulnerable fear when they’re at the top of their game, especially one that deals so directly with their ability to continue their careers.
The song’s music video, depicts the members as having a shadow within them, fighting perhaps to escape or take over. That all plays into the overall Jungian concepts that the band plays with throughout the album "Map of the soul:7"

You're spot on in your interpretation about it being about musical burnout. Also I think the true unifying power of this track is that it can apply to all creatives. The very act of making your talent, personality and imagination the basis of your career is a brave thing. It means your career is fuelled by your creativity and your perspective, your innermost thoughts and feelings. It's a vulnerable thing to put that into a piece of art and share it with others for both enjoyment and criticism. It's easy to feel like if your art isn't good enough, that means that you aren't good enough. It seems like a common thought that creatives have during burnout. Black Swan feels like an empathetic track. It shares BTS's fears and insecurities with us while also comforting those of us who have been there too. So many people who aren't musician can relate as well and that's beautiful. Authors, songwriters, architects, dancers, graphic designers, web designers, whatever. That creative burnout from your passion can feel devastating and like you're unmoored but it's good to know that you're not alone and that people get it. Especially when it's your fave musicians.

As far as your interpretation, you are right. I don't know if I would see it as burnout, but I am not myself an artist.

The melody, the lyrics, the gorgeous music video just broke me wide open....and after years of creative drought, I wrote my first GOOD song (and made an illustration to boot!) in years, about the feelings I experienced after this song hit me. It was painful, but also cathartic and exhilarating! I still tear up every time I hear this song, and even more so when I watch the MV....Jimin's dedication to his dance just kills me. Its my favorite track of theirs.
Also, my take on "film it now": their lives have been lived out on film for the past decade. So I think it either means, "better film it now before our love of music runs dry!", or more like "go ahead and make a film out of our 'first death'/downfall", since they know that the media loves it when artists crash and burn out.

I highly suggest that you learn a little more about the guys before moving on. There are 3 fan made videos that are all excellent. 1) The Guide to BTS Members: the Bangtan 7 by Taylor Mari. It is current to May 2022. It has no narration, so you will need to read captions. Taylor gives a brief history of the band and an in-depth look at each member. 2) The Most Beautiful Life Goes On: A Story of BTS by Rice Squad. It is current to April 2022. It has engaging narration and gives a brief introduction to each member with an in-depth history of the band. 3) This is BTS by Xceleste. It is current to mid-2020. Again engaging narration but she focuses on why BTS is popular. All 3 are very informative and well made. Thanks for reacting!💜

Through your entire reaction I just kept saying 'He gets it'. Thank you so much for understanding their music. It is quite remarkable. They take real, every day things that people feel and experience, and that happen to themselves, and put it into words we can relate to. Then they wrap it all up into a piece of art. But they never dwell on the negative - they show you that you can pull out of whatever you are stuck in. They encourage people. You nailed this. And I hope that this can be a sort of anthem for you, to help you find your art/creativity/self. Good luck on your continued journey. (My opinion on the connection to 'Black Swan' as the title, there is a saying that when a dancer loses the ability or the passion to dance, that is considered their first death.) All my best to you.

I loved hearing your thoughts on this track, it is indeed about the loss of passion regarding creating music. Martha Graham was a dancer who said “a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this death is the more painful”. This quote was used as the basis for this song as well as the film Black Swan, about a ballerina going through stages of psychosis. ✌️💜

48 years old ARMY here. I've always been into pop music and I have a lot of songs that I like but I"ve never really had any favorite singers or musicians because most of them just really sing about romantic love, broken relationship, material things etc. Not until I've known BTS through their music. They sing about issues such as mental health, depression, societal expectations, hard work, reaching your goals, loving yourself etc. They also sing about Love but it's not the mediocre kind of love that most singers sing. One thing to remember in order for you to understand BTS lyricism is their story line. Black Swan is from their album Map Of The Soul 7 which is connected to their previous album Map of the Soul: Persona. In both album, they talk about their individual struggles being popular celebrities vs their own private persona. Most BTS songs and MVs have explanations. Here is a link to what their song Black Swan means czcams.com/video/PRdSXnBqkak/video.html

If you're going through a rough time as a musician... it may not be exactly your feelings and thoughts, but one of my favorite BTS songs that was the first to grab me was "First Love" by SUGA (from their Wings album). Something hit me really hard, and I related to it so much that I stared out of a window crying for about an hour thinking about my life (I was going through a really rough time). I would absolutely love to see you hear and read it (no mv).
I love that when BTS makes music they also incorporate small things that links to the music. E.g. in Black Swan they made the song more (how did you phrase it) hmm "monotone" at times, and I think it's to emphasize the lyrics of the fear of not having passion and inspiration for music - the fear that it'll one day not move you the way it used to. They also use drums that sounds like the heart pumping. The unease. They often use elements to emphasize the lyrics. And don't even get me start on the mv (that's a whole long text on it's own).
BTS really just takes an open mind... but having watched reaction videos for a while now, I find that people who has a background and knowledge about music are able to spot some of the gems that sets BTS apart from other artists.
There is also a brilliance to BTS' music if you react to it in order/with the album. Because every song can have multiple meanings on their own, but when you put it in context of their album it gets another dimension. The storytelling throughout the "Love Yourself" album series ... just PERFECT!

One of many things I love about BTS is their music can be deceptive, like I can listen to an upbeat song but when I check the lyrics translation it can hit differently. Many of their lyrics are deep because they write about their own experiences and reflections, but they have easy songs too. BTS is just different on many levels and many people find something to relate to.

You are right, they don’t sing about sex, fast cars, hooking up, flashing money and being famous, they are humble guys who have hearts of gold. I hope this song has helped you and guided you out of your writers block and given you inspiration 💜

Musical burn out is a pretty good way to put it. As to Black Swan, I would recommend checking out the movie (Natalie Portman & Mila Kunis) or the Swan Lake ballet - you're right about writers/music block. Glad it has resonated with you :) BTS lyrics and themes tend to be pretty universally relatable and they're always able to find the right words to help their audience express what maybe we couldn't find words for / ways to acknowledge these feelings.

The part where they sing about how when their heart stopped beating for music they compare it to having their "first death". Because when you love something so much, you don't really think about idea of not loving it anymore.

The strength of BTS is definitely the songwriting, they discuss so many topics, ideas, usually quite introspective and each member are just deep thinkers and not trying to hide their flaws, doubts which I think is why we have this connection to the group!

I recommend ON kinetic manifesto film after Black Swan.
Black Swan is a song that expresses their fear of losing their passion for music.
And ON is their determination to overcome that fear and move on to the future. :)
BTS member Jin said in his acceptance speech at the 2018 MAMA that BTS suddenly became famous worldwide and had a hard time for a year due to great pressure and fear. They even thought about disbanding. However, after a year of talking and contemplating with the members, they decided to stay in the industry only for the fans and members, and move forward.
The albums that have been released since then are Map of the Soul series. The albums are filled with songs that reconsider their inner self, the relationship between the seven members, and the relationship between them and fans. Black Swan, ON, Boy with Luv, and We are Bulletproof : the Eternal are one of those songs.
Boy with Luv contains a message that they will fly toward fans, not the sun, with wings attached by ARMY.
After listening to Black Swan, you can better understand how they feel by reading ON's lyrics. :)
And at the last October's concert in Busan, SUGA told ARMY to grow old together because they will make music for another 20 or 30 years.😭
The lyrics of BTS' songs are based on their own experiences, and their albums are organic because they contain their growth narrative.
It will also be fun to listen to their albums in order and analyze them. :)
Oh, there're many good Black Swan live performances. These two are my favorite lives. :)

This song is indeed about burnout but more than just musical. It's about every aspect of who they are because this group has literally been their entire LIFE for the last decade. There is a quote at the beginning of the contemporary video that also helps to explain how they feel which says, "A dancer dies twice, and the first death is the more painful." and as a person who used to dance and loved it but can no longer dance, it is in a way a death bc you lose that part of yourself to it that you can never get back, and that is something all performers fear regardless of their profession and I am happy that they are open about having those fears.

I myself was a huge fan of Bob Dylan a dead head, into the greatful dead, in my early life. I've never considered BTS to be a boyband nor have I ever felt the need to use the word "just" in front of anything describing them. And, oh the joys of being single now means I have no need to explain why I have a poster of Jimin from filter and a large tapestry of all of them them in my bedroom among of merch of theirs in my home. I hope they stay in the business for many years to come. They continue to be a breathe of fresh air.

Thank you for your thoughtful reaction. There is something special about BTS. I don’t know whether it’s the struggle they had to make it, the perfect jigsaw they are together whilst being 7 very individual people or their desire to work hard to make something of meaning.
The song that unexpectedly impacted me was their live at Wembley performance of “Tear”. I think I barely took a breath through it.
I’m glad you mentioned the common song topics currently which are just plain boring. Early BTS has a bit of that, but they were kids then. Sadly, most performers never grow out of it.
My recommendations,- for a warm psychological hug- “Magic Shop”
A thinking person’s emotional song- Spring Day” related to the Sewol ferry disaster. There are explanatory videos out there.
For an expose on modern anger- “Ugh”. The DKTV explanatory video is helpful on this as there are many cultural references.
And for just a great thank goodness it’s Friday song - “So What” (and as with all BTS, live is where it’s at).👌

Blake you nailed it, Black Swan talks about that, musical exhaustion. Their success came at once, if I'm not mistaken it took off in America with DNA, in 2017 and after that their lives took a 360 degree turn, they they didn't have time for anything, and since they sang in Yet to Come, they just ran and did their job as best they could. Black Swan was released in January 2020, and Suga even commented that with the unexpected success he was feeling pressed, what if I didn't have more inspiration, what if I didn't like to make music anymore, that kind of thing. I consider Black Swan a masterpiece, from the lyrical part, lyrics, video. If you can watch their live presentation of Black Swan in the stadium, at the show, it's too beautiful. You said that you appreciate the lyrics of the boys' songs. You need to know the songs of Rapper line, RM, Suga and J. Hope, their Cypher are incredible, they suffered so much with rejection and insults and they turned that pain into music, very smart as they are, I'm sure that you as a musician will be surprised. Some I nominate:
    MIc Drop
    Cypher 3:Killer
    Cypher pt.4
    Ugh
    Ddaeng
thanks for the reaction and comments to the boys.

Yes! This song was about burn out and loss of passion for something you love, BTS had been working nonstop at this point since 2012 so at this point they’re burnt out…. Black Swan was on Map of the Soul 7 released in 2020 before the pandemic shutdown, they were supposed to have a major world tour then take a break as a group to do their solo stuff also their required military service, but in the wake of the pandemic they had to cancel the tour…… So what happened, they had to cancel the world tour was given the song Dynamite which was a positive song that they wanted to do because of the pandemic for positive energy, it made them Even more popular, then came Butter and Permission to Dance and they decided to so many things online for the fans to keep everyone positive during the pandemic it pushed everything back and delayed all their plans but gosh helped fans through the pandemic but added extra burnout to them , It’s crazy how they care so much about the fans.
Black Swan is a movie reference..

As an artist, I interpret the song to be about creative burnout. I identify a lot with this song - whether it’s creating music, art or any content, there’s an ebb and flow to to the creative flow that comes from within us. Sometimes you’re just dry with no ideas or inspiration. It’s not something that can be forced, it comes in its own time. So it’s best to step away and take a break. Anyhow, I really vibe with this song because I experience it time to time.

  • @lauralcantor3897
    @lauralcantor3897 Před rokem +2

I truly adore this song. So many people over identify themselves with their passion, only to lose sight of who they are outside of it. The repeated lines of "what's my thing," the almost heartbeat like nature of the instrumental, the sections of the song that lack distinction, these are all personifications of this lack of separation.
You mentioned that you didn't understand the reference to "Black Swan," the movie of the same title follows a dancer who has spent her entire life in the pursuit of perfection through her art and because of this lacks any understanding of herself outside of it. It also contains themes regarding fear of replacement, as well as being stuck in a single stage of development.
To fully understand the connection, the context of this song is important. This song came out with the Map of the Soul: 7 album, which was based off of Jungian psychological concepts. The highlighted concepts in the album are the Persona, the shadow, and the ego. The persona is the forward facing public image of oneself, the shadow the shameful bits etc. Black swan embodies the shadow aspect of these concepts. Interestingly enough, even though this song embodies the shadow, it is presented in the music video as if it is through the persona. We can see this through the stage setting of the music video. However, the true nature of the meaning reveals itself through the autonomous movement of the shadows.
In my opinion, the lyrics "film it now" are some of the most haunting in the song. It highlights the fact that on some level, BTS perhaps relies on their public image so much, that their emotions have to be validated through the camera. Their felt need to be so honest with ARMY, in some ways, means that their struggle is an opportunity to record their pain for distribution. They cannot separate themselves from the 'camera,' which is their public image. They think that perhaps their agony is somehow worth it if some form of art is expressed from it. We can even see this in the chosen setting of the music video, their pain is played out on the stage in front of an 'audience.'
BTS spoke a lot about their struggle to separate themselves as people and themselves as artists. Just like in the movie black swan they are living in a world that "demands utmost devotion and rigorous perfectionism from its performers and inadvertently blurs the line between reality and perceived reality."
This is my first video of yours that I watched, and I could see that it was touching you in a very personal way. I could feel that you were frustrated with yourself, and that although you have gone through the logical steps to process these emotions, you are still struggling with feeling them. You are frightened of the thought that you have already given all that you have, and yet still not reached what you sought to. Please remember that you are more than your art, and more than what you have to give to the world. I like to think that each day is an art piece, whether it be a song or a painting. You are constantly creating! And because you are living, you are changing and progressing and therefore developing. I'm so sorry if this was over-reaching, or made you uncomfortable. I struggle with this too, and these are some of the thoughts I had surrounding the issue!
P.S Sorry if this is too long, I could honestly write about it all day lol
