👉 Changing to a simpler domain name.
What to expect when changing a domain name in WordPress?
Some drop in traffic and page rankings as search engines need time to re-crawl and re-index your content under the new domain name.
💥 Note: before you learn how to change a domain name in WordPress, make sure to back up your website.
Now, let’s see the steps on how to change a domain name in WordPress without damaging your SEO efforts:
1️⃣ Purchase a new domain name
Use Hostinger’s domain name checker to find an available new domain name.
2️⃣ Add the new domain name to your hosting account
We’ll show you how to do this using Hostinger’s hPanel. Remember that it might take up to 24 hours for the domain to propagate.
3️⃣ Copy all WordPress core files from your old domain
Learn how to clone all website content from the old domain to the new one using the File Manager.
4️⃣ Change the WordPress site address
Use the WordPress admin dashboard to update the website address. If there are set fixed values in the wp-config file, update your WordPress URL directly on the file. In the following code, replace olddomain.com with the new site URL:

define('WP_SITEURL','olddomain.com');
5️⃣ Reset the URL structure
Update the URL structure to prevent visitors from getting a 404 error on your website.
6️⃣ Redirect your old WordPress domain permanently
Create 301 redirects for all URLs associated with the old domain. This step will help carry over page ranking values to the new domain, helping to preserve your hard-earned SEO results. Edit the .htaccess file to set up 301 redirects by:
👉 Replacing the old domain with the new one.
👉 Inserting the following code:
#Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ yoursitename.com/$1 [R=301,L]
👉 Saving the changes.
That’s it! You’ve successfully changed your domain name in WordPress.

Why is this such a long complicated process that involves copying files etc? In other hosts like Flywheel all you have to do is add a new domain and set it as the primary domain and their system updates the database site URL settings and there is no need to copy files or deal with any of that? Can Hostinger please just add a more simple way to change the site URL and add a new domain as the primary domain in their dashboard?

My website now works OK, but Google tutorials mentions to do a Search and Replace. Is this necessary?
I can see thousands of old domain names in the database. How is it possible for the website to work with a new domain name? Is it really enough just to change those 2 entries in wp_options?

is this really going to work without changing the database URL? I found in the comment that they can't access the wordpress url after they follow your instructions and there is only 1 reason i can think of, it's because the database has no WordPress data in it.

During this period, you have a chance to redeem your domain name with no risk of deletion. Keep in mind that some TLDs do not have a grace period.
