  • On a dreary late December day in 2023, I happened upon GIO Rail's St. Catherines Job working the Dunn Paper warehouse in St. Catherines, ON during a trip to Canada. After swapping boxcars at the business and waiting for one to be unloaded, the crew made their way south for home, crossing over the Canadian National Grimsby Subdivision along the way. Unfortunately, just a few short months later, GIO Rail would cease operations on the Grantham Spur and ultimately place the line out of service, making this one lucky catch the first and last time I would see this operation.

Good job you caught this one and well done. But I loathe to see a Railroad be Abandoned.
The name 'Grimsby' always makes me quake. At Grimsby in the UK, I spent 2 wintertime months fixing some incorrectly installed Launder Channels at a Sewage Works. However, the Railways around Immingham Docks were good to watch.

Thanks a lot! Despite the weather and having to head back south of the border, it was an enjoyable chase that I wish I had done again!

I'm shocked they don't sound the horn for any of the crossings here, find that very strange. Nice coverage!

I thought the same; it seems as though highly populated areas are quiet zones in southern Ontario because I noticed the same thing in numerous cities. Thanks a lot! I was actually on my way back to the border when I decided to give this area one last look, and there they were!

    Great video but sad.

Thank you, and I agree. To make it worse, I had knowledge of GIO Rail suspending this op, yet for some reason I never went back to catch it again. Huge lapse in judgment on my part.

The brooms on the back porch is something you rarely see modelled. I hope the Alco has found work elsewhere.

I think you misunderstood, only the railroad's operations in St. Catherines were terminated. The railroad is still in operation elsewhere, and they still have the RS18.

So these customers now have no rail service. Is anyone taking this over ? More loads turned over to the trucks. Too bad. Nice shots though.

There are talks that CN might take over, so we'll see.
