how do you make sure the new box is centered?

Make sure that the steering wheel is centered before you remove the steering gear. Before installing the new gear, put them side to side and spin the steering shaft on the new one so that the flat part of the steering shaft is at the same position as the old one's. Don't ask me how I know that's the best way to go!

not what that adjustment is for, that adjustment is for preload on the gears it does not make up for wear slop.

the adjustment for the slop is at the input. the preload bolt and nut have to be backed off first, the box should be "dry" fluid worked out of it, the large nut at the input splines torqued to 30ft lbs. The preload bolt gets tightened till 4-7 inch pounds to turn the input on the steering box. hold the hex portion and tighten the lock nut. Replace o rings, reattach steering box to frame, install lines, linkage(disconnected pitman from box or centerlink from pitman arm)and steering shaft. If you adjust at the preload only the box will bind up and become nothing short of junk in less than a week.
