  • This is a guide on how to grind and sharpen drill bits on the Universal Tool & Cutter Grinder also known as the D Bit grinder using the included drill sharpening attachment. These grinders are clones of the original Deckel grinder and are sold around the world with different model numbers such as PP-U3, TM-U3, U2, U3 etc. The drill grinding attachment that comes with these grinders is hard to figure out how use.

    My grinder was a paper weight until your video guide. Thank you!

    As already written here, very informative video. I can sharpen drill bits by hand, but it's more accurate with a machine. Thanks for the video.

    Purchased a machine from China, and found the instructions that came with the unit of no use. Your video instruction helped me to be able to use the machine . Thanks a lot.- Excellent instructions.

    Thanks a lot for this video. So little info out there on this versatile little machine.

    Thank you Sir for your video, I found it helpful. I have a mid-grade Drill Doctor, which works great for most of my need, but when I need to sharpen 120 degree Spot drills then I need a bit more versatility, which is when the Deckel clone comes out. I have yet to use it, but sometime this week I will sharpen those Spot drills. Thanks again!

    I have had one of these machines now for a few years but have never used the drill grinding attachment only looked at it a few times wondering how to use it. I thought I would take a moment to learn. I enjoyed your video and your instruction, however it seems to be fiddley and time consuming so I will continue to hand sharpen as I have done for the last 50 years.

      Glad you enjoyed the video. It's definitely fiddly but once you get the hang of it the results can be really good. I am hopeless at hand sharpening so use this attachment for larger drill bits.

    This size drill bit benefits from split edge, in Australia the name of these is Viper. The method shown does not produce that …

    Great instructional video.
    I have looked at this same d-bit grinder from Hare and Forbes but didn't realise one could sharpen drill bit .. question do you think you could sharpen large drill bit up to 30 with MT 3 shank? If not what machine would handle this task? Hand sharpening the big ones is tricky.... Paul

    Very good.Thank you.I ´ll look again and try to figure out what is the purpose of this little plates and how to mark them.

    Hi friends: There appears to be two different styles of drill sharpening attachments with these clone machines. The tips at the business end of this and Luc' s have the alignment plate running parallel with the center line of the pivot. On the other style this tear drop shaped plate is cocked at an angle slightly less than perpendicular to the center line. The tear drop plate is rotated until the cutting edge is parallel with the center line of the pivot pin. The drill trough is also cocked at an angle other than 90 degrees to this center line. At this date I have no idea which works better or is easier .......both styles are on offer in the shopping portals, so look carefully if you are shopping for one of these gadgets.

    I've searched and searched, but I have no idea how to make those plates on the end. You mentioned the stock one is too big for small drills, to small for large ones, so which size is it good for? If I knew I could at least use it as an example...

    Can you provide a link to the CZcams channel you mentioned. I think the name sounded like “Look”??

    Have you sharpened end mills and lathe tools yet, using the other attachments? It would be great to see videos of those processes too. Thanks, Craig

      @@ProjectsDownUnder That is exactly the one I am looking for. I will subscribe to the channel and look forward to seeing that video. Have you even given any thought to using the grinder to sharpen slitting saws somehow? Perhaps with an additional home made accessory.

    • @ProjectsDownUnder
      @ProjectsDownUnder  Před 4 lety +2

      I rarely use slitting saws so haven't had the need just yet to resharpen one. I would imagine it would be rather difficult though. These little machines are like a jack of all trades but a master of none.

    To sum up my appraisal of this type of machine....I used to have a Deckel SO..... it's not really suitable for general tool grinding at the prices asked as you can do all the grinding on a bench grinder with just a tilting tool rest......the original concept by Deckel was specifically aimed at D bit grinding but people though it was a good idea to attempt universal tool grinding too for which it fell very short.

    • @ProjectsDownUnder
      @ProjectsDownUnder  Před 4 lety

      It's not a terrible machine but if you keep your eye out on the used machine market you can find yourself a much better older tool and cutter grinder that's for sure. Certainly if you have a good tool rest on the grinder your can do a lot of what this machine can do but not all.

    • @gangleweed
      @gangleweed Před 4 lety

      @@ProjectsDownUnder As I said, I had a Deckel but my opinion is it is very limited for universal status.....true it will grind some tools but it was designed specifically for a purpose not as a universal do all grinder......I have CUTTTERMASTER tool & cutter grinder which is a true T&C grinder per se.
      Edit....Oct 2021....having got rid of a Deckel I find I now could do with one to do cutter sharpening for a mill I've just commissioned, but more versatile than the original concept so I'm building one from the ground up with a few different characteristics.

    Can you tell me what youtuber (Luke?) who did a video on sharpening drill bits that you mention taught you how as well as how he made the adapters for different sized drill bits?

    • @ProjectsDownUnder
      @ProjectsDownUnder  Před 4 lety

      I filmed a video of the drill attachment modification (not uploaded yet) but not making the little plates to go with it. To make the little plates I used a piece of 1.2mm sheet metal and used some metal shears to cut them out. There was some trial and error and grinding.

      @@ProjectsDownUnder Thanks for a very helpful video. Can you provide some drawings or dimensions of what size plates have worked for you?

    • @ProjectsDownUnder
      @ProjectsDownUnder  Před 4 lety +3

      From the center of the screw hole the 3 plates are about 6, 9 and 12mm respectively and they are all 10mm wide. If you search Luc Wybo here on youtube he has some videos on drill sharpening on this grinder, in the description he has a PDF that has some dimensions on the plates. I made mine based of those dimensions.

    I don’t like the idea of holding the larger bits by hand. It’s too easy to slip. I don’t have one of these, though I’ve been thinking about it, but it seems that there should be a way to make a mod for the holder for bigger bits.

    • @ProjectsDownUnder
      @ProjectsDownUnder  Před 3 lety

      Yeah I agree I would like to make a different drill holder in the future. But it's okay for occasional user.
