Hi, my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent comes from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work, but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I would only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people consider this the lowest time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly, what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving, and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I have been living full-time in my self convert van.

I'd have the bear spray ready and any other weapons on my person. Emmie just casually walks to her car and gets in like there are no bad people in the world.😅

Oh my goodness… I thought the exact thing!!! Blacked out windows parked right beside her van in an empty parking lot. I would have jumped into my van on the passenger side and taken off!

Kelly ❤ animals can smell the medicine in the food. I had to put the meds down my cats throat it wasn’t fun…she never bit me. She looked like Kelly so much it’s amazing to me, one of the reasons I watch you, although you’re sweet love your videos.

I have had to do this with a few cats over the years, lesser of two evils I guess, we give the meds that way or they stay sick. Upping the dry food intake only makes it harder on them to stay hydrated. I hope this reads ok Emi, Miss Kitty is living her best with you, hard when they are not well.
I used to trim the meat I was cooking for the family and give some to the cats. If the cats refused to eat it (which happened occasionally) then I didn't feed it to my children. I'm sure they can smell chemicals or something in the meat that we don't notice.
In many decades of fostering cats, I've yet to find one that accepts food with medicines in. Liquids are the easiest but very few cats quietly accept meds
My cat won’t eat wet food, either. She’ll lick the gravy off and leave the food. 😢 Beautiful scenery at the creek and falls!
Funny Kelly. My 3 cats always have wet food and one will run to me every time I go to the kitchen. She will trip me up if I don't feed her. She is a big tabby.😊
I give my cat her medicine crushed in one of those tube treat lickables. I just squeeze it into her dish with the medicine mixed in it. I camped at those falls in the late spring of this year...beautiful they are. Hug, MO

Try the cheddar cheese trick for giving Kelly the pills. Melt the cheese; wrap it around the pill. Get her used to cheese by also putting other cheese fragments into her food. ❤

My boy likes turkey, so I get a couple slices from the deli, & wrap the pill in a bit of that. Doesn’t always work, but worth a try! The cheese is a good one too!💕🐈
Just the warmth of your fingers is usually enough to soften the cheese & wrap it around the pill.🐈💕
I throw garlic, onions, and mushrooms in the potatoes. Sprinkle dill weed on it also. Delicious.❤
Great video. I’m not sure if cats have a similar thing, but dogs have “Pill Pockets”. It’s a “treat” with a hole in the middle to insert the pill.
My cat didn't care much for wet food. When I had to give him antibiotics my vet suggested I get little jars of baby food, usually chicken. I mixed the medicine in with a spoonful or two. Then gave him his regular dry food. He loved it that baby food... begged for it every morning.

If you ever have trouble giving a pill, melt cheddar or other cheese and wrap around pill. Works like a charm for me.
My cats will only eat dry food when I have to give them medication I mix with warm milk and dry food try that she might eat for you be happy be safe
When you say Kelly, she doesn’t want to eat the soft cat food I thought about why can she mix it up with the dry food and all of a sudden you put the dry food on her soft food is amazing. I always have fun watching you and Kelly always take care and always be safe. The winter is coming the winter is coming.😂😂😂😘🥰
My SUV home is 4x4 and I keep the winter tires on year round as I travel between Nanaimo and Calgary 😎🚙🇨🇦

Hi Emi and Miss Kelly! I’ve had the same conundrum with my vehicle tires living up North in B.C.! The fix is mud + snow (mud and snow) tires!!!! Highly recommended for our Province’s diverse weather conditions year round! There’s no changing them out. My mechanic is a tire expert and he highly recommends having these kinds of tires for the backcountry because other tires like all seasons aren’t meant for mud/snow/gravel etc. Blessings 🌱
I personally would put one shovel in the back and maybe find space for the second in your living space, just in case you would have to shovel to get out of the van to even get to the back..... especially since they seem to fold up pretty flat.... Stay safe!
Am always so happy that you have heat, fridge, in dry place to sleep and you have Kitty. I just shove the pill down our cats throat. I just worry like crazy about your safety.

I use a 10cc Syringe to feed my Grandcat soft food with just a hint of water to make a porridge consistency. She wears a long bib to keep her neck shoulders and chest clean. Dollarama has one for about 5 dollars. Flip the pocket at the bottom inside towards her. It has a pink body and blue sleeves. Fingers crossed for Kelly to feel herself soon! ❤

Oh yeah, I boil about six of those potatoes with salted water. Then put them on some parchment, paper or foil. If you want with another piece on top, use the back of a jar or a brick or something heavy and just smash them in between the papers. I seasoned them with salt and pepper. Fold them up and throw them in the freezer. Then you can pull them out when you wish and fry them in a little oil. Very very Crispy. Fast and easy.

You may have to mix powder with a little amount of veg broth. Mix well the put in syringe ( without needle of course)& squirt in side of mouth , trying to mix powder with dry food will notblet Kelly get eniugh to benefit her.

Getting outside for a walk - especially in a lovely place like that waterfall park - is so therapeutic. I imagine the stress of Kelly’s illness has been getting you down, especially after your own illness. Pamper yourself and Kelly, and get outside when you can. Doing that always helps me when I’m feeling a little down, or anxious. Take care!

Kelly reminds me so much of my cat Miss Kitty, as she won't eat canned cat food either, and she is picky about her dry also. I just rescued 2 kitten from the shelter, so cute!!

I hope you have better luck with shovels than I do. Someone steals them. One year I had to buy a new shovel 5 times. One advantage of vanlife. If someone breaks into your garage to steal your shovel you will know right away. Maybe you could even clobber them with the other one. Lol Hope Miss Kelly is getting better.

I'm in Sweden and always use real studded wintertires, never any worrys or problems. I would not recomend old A/T tires for winter it's not safe.

Just a safety observation: There weren't many vehicle's in the lot, however, that pickup parked really close to your van, on your driver's side. I know nothing occured, but It would have been better to get into your van on the passenger side, in this instance. Please practice situational awareness as you travel, because there are people out there who do not have good intentions. There, I made my "mom" comment:) Hope Kitty gets better soon!

Well, she saw you put the medicine in the food, lol !!! Recommend Nulo Lickables Mutli-Flavor treats.......my 9 yr. old loves them...probably because they are like $1.00 US for one tiny tube! I hope kitty gets well!
In Norway we usually change to winter tires in november. Most people here are using non stud tires. If there is undercooled rain that makes a quick black ice on the road at zero temperatures, stud tires is recommended. Where I live when temp goes down under 10-20 degrees celcius, its ok to use stud free tires, unless you are going in very steep roads. A tire chain set is always a good thing to have in your van, in case you get stuck in an area where they have not scraped the road from snow.
Here on the Atlantic coast of Canada everyone has some sort of winter tires. Our own are studded winter tires. We put them on in November also. We have lots of snow/slush/ice from Nov/Dec until March/April.
It's often frustrating to treat a cat who's ill. If only we could explain and they could understand! But Oooh that waterfall; so untamed, so lovely.

Here we use studs on our tires to improve traction but only can use certain months of the year. Just a word of caution chains are really hard on all van parts wheels, axles, rear end, ball joints, tie rods(steering), repairs can be expensive. Tow trucks might be cheaper. Another option is four wheel drive. It is also better in the snow... otherwise you have the BEST EXCUSE to go South of the border where there is no snow and no salt!!! Whatever you decide just enjoy!!!
Give her tuna fish in water and she will eat it up with hopefully no complaints.
Try mixing meds in cream cheese or peanut butter and mix well, then put on your index finger and put in roof of kitty's mouth. Good luck from Kallie in Oregon USA
Awww Kelly loves her Mama!!! I can only imagine how stressful it can be having Kelly sick…I have been fortunate so far that my Sweetie Pie has been healthy and she is around 15yrs young! Love when you share your nature walks, I need to get the proper shoes for hiking so that I can start having my own adventures…as far as the random truck by your van I think that you showing no fear may be a deterrent to any foal play…also we have to be aware but not fearful plus getting into the drivers side is normal and you want to act as normal as possible but that’s just my opinion…love and light blessed be!

Emi, My dogs didn't like much food, everything I gave they left so I tried different brands and they turned out to like hi life Banquet and I can only buy it on Amazon. When my Mum had a cat she was funny about food so my mum put a little grated cheese in it and she ate it all. Xx
I used to walk all the time, I was a Custodian for Catholic School board and that’s all you do is walks but going for walks was so much fun. But after a bad surgery I’m now in wheelchair.

My cat won't eat wet food of any kind either. The only thing we can get him to eat outside of dry food is the Lickables treats. I use Greenies Pill Pockets to get pills in him. To me it beats getting scratched up and bit trying to get pills in him when necessary.

She can smell the medicine in it, my cats( all three)were the same way when it came to medicine. You're gonna have to just place it in her mouth and hold it close until she swallows it and don't give her the regular food.
