- A Virginia county school board is reinstating Confederate names to two schools, reversing a decision made four years ago after the murder of George Floyd.
In a 5-1 vote, the Shenandoah County Public School board reversed a previous board's 2020 decision to change the names of schools linked to Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Turner Ashby, three men who led the pro-slavery Southern states during the Civil War.
The decision came after an hours-long meeting. More than 50 people opposed the reversal.
According to the Virginia Department of Education, more than 5,600 students attend Shenandoah County Public Schools. 75-percent are white, 18-percent are Hispanic, and 3-percent are Black.

I understand why many black college students are protesting what is happening to the Palestinians, but I wish they would put some of that energy into what is happening to black people in this country.

The most ironic thing of all is that even the confederate commander in the civil war, Robert E Lee, plainly said after the war, that he didn't want anyone making a statue of him in his honor. He felt like the civil war was over and done, and that the country should look past this tragic point of US history and heal itself. Never looking back.

As a student of Mountain View (Stonewall) I personally am agaisnt the name change as the money this school needs is help with our school itself, We have paint chipping, Rats and the best teachers of our school are leaving, What we need is a compitient school board. But as a student taking away funding is just an inexcusable way of dealing with this

I live in Shenandoah County and only want to clarify that the numbers put out showing 90%+ support for restoring the names are the result of a misleading, unscientific survey of only the southern end of the county. There is no acceptable number of Confederate sympathizers, but it isn't 90% of the county. Unfortunately, that faction has the financial backing of one of the county's wealthiest businessmen.

I went to a school in Richmond Virginia named after Confederate Colonel JEB Stuart. I went to a civic center named after John C. Calhoun. One of the main stats in Richmond, Route 1, just recently lost the moniker Jefferson Davis Highway. Richmond has been and is a majority black city.

@SEA-dx1sv unfortunately, that’s probably not going to happen. The demographics there are 75% white, 18% Hispanic and 3% Black. Small towns like that in the South are not trying to evolve and move close to equality for all of God’s children. Read up on Vidor, Texas when you get some time. I visited that town 40 years ago when I was in high school and it has only gotten worse over the years as it relates to racism and equality.

Vote in all local elections, especially school boards. They aren’t marked R or D but search social media. Find Mom’s for Liberty candidates and vote against them.
Move…my parents fled the South in 1961.
Get your children out of these schools asap. There is no way I would subject my children to be in community with these horrible people, making decisions about their advancement, placement, and ultimately their success in moving on to the next chapter of their lives. While I am aware of the economic struggles Black parents may have, I am also in staunch support of us gathering, connecting, and utilizing every resource at our disposal to shield our young people from deliberate and oppressive behaviors from leaders in these spaces.

If American school boards feel that they have to celebrate generals that led armies that slaughtered American soldiers, why don't they name some of their schools after British Gen. Benedict Arnold. Like Confederate Gen. Lee and Gen. Jackson, they too served the American Military prior to choosing to serve an army, a nation that fought against America. Yes, the Civil War was not just a squabble between the North and South, that sanitizes the war too much. It was a war between two countries, America and the Confederate States of America (the C.S.A, a nation that separated itself from America).
