WTH?! Decades Without Elections: Black Mayor Elected, Whites Lock Him Out of Office! | Roland Martin

  • The first elected and first black Newbern, Alabama Mayor has not been able to carry out his duties leading the town because white city officials have blocked his efforts for three years.

    Fanbase 👉🏾 www.startengine.com/offering/...
Patrick Braxton assumed office by default in 2020 when he filed for office, and no one else, including the incumbent, did the same. Previous Newbern mayors had been appointed or ran unopposed, with several serving for more than ten years. Many residents did not know they were allowed to have elections.
Braxton has an ongoing lawsuit alleging the white town leaders arranged an illegal and secret special election preventing Braxton from appointing a majority-Black town council and Newbern voters from electing their candidate of choice for town council.
Newbern is about 77 miles southwest of Birmingham, and its population is about 80% Black and 20% white. However, the town's leadership, except for Braxton and his town council, has been majority white for years.
The Legal Defense Fund has filed a preliminary injunction to force Newbern to hold elections and allow its citizens to vote for the first time in years.
Morenike Fajana, Senior Counsel of LDF joins us from New with the details of the bizarre case.

I don't see what's so surprising and shocking. I'm a black person from North Vancouver Canada and I've heard of this kind of stuff in American small towns for years. There's always been excuses like, "well it's such a small number of people involved and it is so isolated that it's not worth the time and effort to correct." I'm sure state and federal governments are aware of this kind of Injustice and behavior in many towns like this across the United States but yet have chosen not to anything. And what about people? Have they just chosen to sit back and do nothing? I would think "no" that is not the case because just look at some of the comments in regards to this video. Clearly there's some external pressures keeping democracy from prevailing these towns and given situations.

Brother what do you mean, "what does Justice look like??" Are you kidding me? America's supposed to be the archetype of democracy for the entire world but yet this type of behavior and situation is happening within the borders of the United States! It's about the rights of people and what is supposed to be a fair and just society! When people call the United States a sick "f"ing country this is the why. People are being denied their basic rights as citizens all because of the simple fact of the color of skin. And frankly, it seems to be okay with a whole lot of people. Including the federal and state governments. Smh!!🤔

This sadly and angrily reminds me of Wilmington, North Carolina in 1898. By no means does what Newbern has and is perpetrating equate to the extreme racist measures of what they did in Wilmington, but the end result is the same, they refuse to let democracy rule and they absolutely refused to let a black man have power.
