John Stockton (23pts/24asts - playoffs record/5stls) vs. Lakers (1988)

  • John Stockton gives LA some of its own medicine and pushes the hell out of the ball from the starting minutes. On the other side of the court, he forces deflections and make steals much to the fondness of Chick Hearn who compliments his performance throughout the game. But even a repeat of Magic's playoffs record in assists wasn't enough to win the all-important game 5 of this series. Stockton even manages to get two steals in the last 1:30 of the game and turn them into implemented fast breaks, however, it seems like Utah didn't have enough firepower, having only 6 players ready for NBA playoffs basketball on their team, to be on top against the Lakers, who can afford having guys like Mychal Thompson just coming off the bench and doing miracles, after 48 minutes of basketball. I do agree with Chick though. This was the best I have ever seen John Stockton play. May 17, 1988.

      Stockton used his left hand lol. I love THE NBA STORYTELLER when it comes to entertainment but his video on Stockton was ridiculous. You can see highlights of Stockton blowing right by Michael Jordan on multiple occasions with his left hand. In fact his crossover in general was to his left.
      He was right hand dominate for sure, but he had absolutely no issue using his left or going to his left.
      Hell, there is a play in this very game were he drives by Cooper to his left and finishes.

      Just like they are in history...Magic #1, Stockton #2 point guards all time. And believe me, that's no disrespect or small change. Magic is the number two or three player ever in most sane people's viewpoint. So Stockton was the truth.

    • @adrielmoody
      @adrielmoody Před 8 lety +14

      +Doug in San Diego The only reason Stockton's assist numbers are lower per game is because of his diminished minutes due to his age in his later years. in their prime John was literally breaking the assist per game record year after year(Or challenging it) He broke Magic's all time record in only 7 years as a starter. Magic was the best point guard ever in a landslide, but strictly on Assist numbers Stockton's got it.

      averaged a collective triple double for his first 4 playoff runs (80, 81, 82, 83) with 18-10-10-3 and was 0.6 apg short of averaging a triple double in the 1980 title run during the playoffs

      @NobodyTouchesJordan Před 7 lety +14

      you can make the case for that for sure. I have a lot of respect for Stockton, even if I think Magic is the best PG.
      Stockton set the record for most apg in a playoff series with 16.4 apg in these 1988 WCSF against the Lakers
      both Magic and Stockton are the only players with 16+ apg in a series, doing so twice apiece
      Stockton also has the highest career playoff AST:TO ratio in history of 3.56 to 1, and he maintained that while making the playoffs every season of his career even up to age 41 in the 2003 Playoffs

  • @j-r-m7775
    @j-r-m7775 Před 4 lety +7

    Stockton is truly a pleasure to watch play. He doesn't have flashy Kyrie handles but he protects the ball and actually does have all time ball handling skills. He isn't a flash passer like Magic but his head is always on a swivel looking to make the right play. Plus he almost always passes it to the shooters chest in the "shooters pocket" so the shooter can just let it fly without having to reposition. He isn't super quick or athletic but he has enough quickness to keep the defender off balance and he is great at change of pace dribbles. Top it all off he hustles on almost every play, He's a little bulldog out there.

    In this game we can see the Iron Man A. C. Green playing for the Lakers, but many people forget that Stockton's durability was equally impressive. Over the course of 19 seasons, out of a possible 1526 games, Stockton only missed 22, with 18 of those in one season and four in another. That is, he didn't miss a single game in 17 of his 19 seasons.
    That is why his records in total assists and steals are almost as unlikely to be broken as Wilt's total rebounds mark.

Magic...11.2 ast/game career, Stockton 10.5. Just...no. No one was a better playmaker than Magic. And that height meant that he had to give up speed and quickness to guards like Stockton, Isiah, KJ, and even Jordan. So how come they couldn't consistently exploit it? And how come if that height meant so much, no one has come remotely close to duplicating Magic, while a more up tempo version of Stockton (Steve Nash) won two MVPs?

    Wow was that guy good. These young guns have no freaking idea the legend that is John Stockton. Karl Malone was great and Hornacek was a phenomenal pure and spot shooter but those Jazz teams had basically nothing else. When you look at what he did at the Point nobody did it better, period. Magic is obviously the best because of his height and the Big O was ahead of his time but after that JS is in the discussion as the best that has every played this game. Not flashy, not as explosive of a scorer as Archibald or Isiah, but the fact that he didn't win a title doesn't impact his greatness. Neither Magic or Isiah would have won titles on those Jazz teams. Here are the facts: He was a way better distributor than Thomas and a far better defender. He was as good a PG in transition and in the pick and roll as I have ever seen. I have no problem if people think Isiah was better but it's really, really, close. On the other hand none of the PG's today are in the same league with Stock, zero. The position has changed, some of them today have to score more, but Stockton played that position to perfection. He was a maestro.

      +Liam G What do you think about guys like Derrick Rose in his MVP year or Kyrie Irving or Stephen Curry or Rajon Rondo? Mark my words, unless Curry dies he's gonna be the best three point shooter of all time. I know the position has changed but this is the PG right now but people back then would shit themselves when they seen Westbrook coming out and crossing the whole team then dunking on their center like he was a 6'3 Jordan.

      @liamg2271 Před 6 lety +2

      Here's the thing: The #1 attribute when you talk about greatness in all sports is consistency. Stock was crazy durable and remarkably consistent. It's very difficult to compare players from different eras. I don't consider Curry, Kyrie, Westbrook, etc pure PG's. I would take Curry ahead of Stockton because of his explosiveness. CP3 resembles Stock for sure but JS made fewer mistakes and was more durable.

      Stockton was no joke. He was a much better defender than Nash. Best pure PG that ever lived. I don't consider Magic a pure Point. The guy was tough as nails and made very few mistakes. He was also way, way, quicker off the bounce than people realize. If he wanted to he could have easily been a 20 ppg scorer. He wasn't as explosive a scorer as Thomas but he was a better all-around player. If he was on those Pistons teams he would have also won multiple championships. Malone obviously was a stud but Utah really didn't have much else.
