- John Stockton is one of the toughest NBA players of all time. He wasn't the biggest or strongest but he would never back down to anyone. Chris Webber tells a story about purposely trying to injury him “I laid him out, one of the best screens I ever had. I got my shoulder kinda in that head area, maybe a little dirty. He pops up, pats me on the butt and said nice screen. Do you know how demoralizing that is? Yeah, I mean he was one of the toughest guys.”

One thing I remember about Stockton is that no one EVER got in his head. He was always humble and a fierce competitor at the same time.
Too bad that every single player in all sports aren't like John Stockton. We need humble, strong, and fierce competitors as role models.

Our Country has totally forgotten the value of an upright Character and good morals and ethics! The reason we USED to all posses these GREAT ATTRIBUTES of CHARACTER is the fact the USA started with people steeped in the JUDEO-CHRISTIAN TRADITION.
In our quest to be "PROGRESSIVE" , whatever that means, we have thrown all those great CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES out the window, but we have literally thrown the baby out with the bath water!!

I was raised in a lower working class neighborhood south of Spokane, Wa and actually played high school basketball with John Stockton and I played a Whitworth College while Stock played at Gonzaga University. My best friend was Black in my neighborhood and his family always went to Church as did mine. We need to rediscover where moral and ethical TRUTHS actual come from and that is the Creator God of the Universe!!

Was in Spokane a lot and Stockton was a year younger than me. Smart, tough, and never "took a play off." He'd take the most vicious hits on picks that he'd set, and get right up. 19 years with the Jazz & they made the playoffs every year. Only missed 22 games in his Hall of Fame career. 6'1" 170 lbs of heart and determination. Other players hated his focus and lack of trash talk; but every player respected him. Truly extraordinary player and person. His assist and steals records will never be broken! I appreciate him and his career. He was great, but never cocky. Good job, John!

Ya ever see Stockton in person back in the day? Dude looked big and strong despite his size. I saw him play live in Chicago plenty of times and I swear the dude didn't have an ounce of fat on him... Even Hornacek looked big up-close.
haha Stock looked like a child trying to screen those guys, and they'd maul him in irritation, rather casually, and he'd draw a foul. Dude did everything he could to piss people off on the court. Hated him at the time, but with the way today's game is, I love it.

I have a ton of respect for John Stockton. Anytime you hear debates about great point guards, this man doesn’t get talk about enough. He wasn’t a prima donna. He gave you 82 games automatically year after year. Great court vision. Great passer. And as you can see, a tough son of a gun who played at 6’1” 170lbs soaking wet. They don’t make too many John Stockton’s in today’s league where players will sit out just to take a night off. A total team player who played the right way. It’s a shame he has no rings. He was special!
If he would have rested more in the regular season he might have had a better chance for winning rings.
Stockton is the greatest point guard in NBA history in my opinion. Nobody has played the position better than he did.

The Bulls were not my favorite team but I loved to watch them play because they were exciting, especially Rodman because there was never a dull moment with him on the court. I hated the Pistons, especially Bill Laimbeer and Isaiah Thomas, but I watched them every chance I got because they were so much fun to watch. I would run home to watch Larry Bird. He and Magic brought a special kind of excitement to the game. Reggie Miller and the Pacers vs. the Knicks (and Spike Lee) was just awesome. I could go on but the point is excitement matters. Stockton was just plain boring. I knew Utah would never win a championship with that guy at the point. Anesthesiologists should use Stockton videos to put patients in a deep sleep before surgery. 😆🤣😂😄
I met John as a teenager in the late 90's. He looks so much smaller on TV compared to the rest of the dudes on the court but that dude isn't small at all to the general public and you can tell he's an athlete. The dudes hands are also abnormally large for his size which definitely contributed to his success.

Some people laugh when I say that stockton is my starting point guard on my all time starting 5. They think I’m joking. Not sure why. Only readon I can think why is because when they think of players, they think of highlight reel players that can fly. Athletic and showmanship. They clearly see the game differently as myself. I pick giys that can do it all and tough as nails. They pick immature players that rather look good than put the ball in the hoop. Old skool fans know what real basketball is. I remember Rasheed Wallace committing a really hard foul on Stockton. Jerry Sloan was so mad, he came out onto the court and was ready to throw punches at Wallace. You could tell Rasheed was shocked that Sloan wanted to throw down.
Talk about toughness, here’s a true Stockton story. One year during playoff time he was in a car accident right before a playoff game. He still suited up that night after the car being totaled, who knows what he had as far as pains, aches and a concussion? When asked, he said he was fine. He didn’t care, he kept on playing. A tough Irish Catholic kid.
The Irish are a special breed. Their toughness is unmatched. They basically won the Revolution for America.

John is class. When I was a ref in little league, I had the pleasure of doing his sons game. Stock would walk the sideline as a parent, he never complained about any calls or anything. He would talk to me as I would go up and down the sideline. He takes no bs from anyone on the court, I see him as the Larry Bird mentality. He gives it all he has and plays hurt. He would light you up if you weren’t expecting it.
Tough as nails! Never retaliated. No fighting. Unlike today's over-sensitive players.

I live in Spokane. I was a Sonics fan but loved going to John’s Dad’s bar called Jack and Dans. It was a great place to watch Jazz games. Especially,when they played the SONICS.

Yeah...it was more than that, he'd fuck with people on the court. He was a sneaky bastard. I'm not saying that to diss him, but it's true. He was sly and used the rules of the game to his benefit. Kind of like Harden today, except in a sneakier way. The game isn't physical like it was back then, so Harden draws BS fouls. Stock would get under people's skin and get absolutely hacked. Or do shit like you saw on the fast breaks, slow down at the last millisecond and get fouled.

Best PG ever and easily one of the top 20 players of all time. There are 5 mayor stats, points, assists, rebounds, blocks and steals. He is the all time leader in two of them. Basketball is not only dunks and flashy players. Not only he has those two records, he only missed 20 games in his entire career. That's crazy. And he always made it to the playoffs. Him and Malone one of the best duos ever. I miss that old NBA.

If you need to build a team around a solid pt guard… I would pick either John Stockton or Maurice Cheeks… Curry third. Curry is sneaky good with his off ball play, but doesn’t have the same grit as Cheeks and Stockton but makes up for it with his shooting. But I will take grit/determination over high level skill at pt guard. Rod Strickland was amazing also at getting to the hoop and getting his shot off while taking hard fouls.

And in my opinion, his mental toughness and all around game make him a way better player than some of todays 'super stars'.

“pure pg” doesn’t mean anything at all. Any position player is to be judged on their impact on the game when ranking them. There are pure PG’s who never won anything, and their are non pure PG’s who have won a lot. Magic, Steph, Zeke… easily better PG’s than Stockton. It’s a weak excuse to say “ya but player X wasn’t a pure PG”. Who cares, they were a PG no matter how you define one. Steph agreed to let the ball be taken out if his hands l, going from averaging 8.5 assists with Jackson as coach, to 6 assists playing off the ball. End of the day, he plays the PG position and is far more effective for his team than Stockton ever was for his. Impact defines greatness. Stockton wasn’t the greatest PG. Any argument to the contrary needs some mvps and rings to back it up.

He was my favourite player when I was younger. When I followed basketball it was the Jazz for me. That Stockton, Malone, Ostertag, Hornacek era was the best Jazz team to ever play. And the way he went about his toughness…without whining. It was so impressive.

Stockton was ambidextrous.
If you watch his play-by-play you'll see him use his left often, including in eays that guys in a similar size-range (Kidd, Nash) couldn't: because he had hands the size of a 6'11" man's, Stockton was able to one-hand pass off the dribble with either hand from the length of the court. When you other great points in Stockton's size class throw a long pass, they brace the ball with their off-hand.
Stockton didn't have to do this. According to Jerry Sloan, this gave Stockton huge advantages against trapping defenses.
Another issue is that Stockon owns the record in Utah's Suicide Drill. This is a drill that measures effectiveness with a player's off-hand (typically their left); the drill requires the player to only use that hand. Stockton is the only player to have cracked thirty seconds in that drill, and the worst he finished in the drill was second when he was 41 and battling a virus in 2003.
Donovan Mitchell was run through his paces in this drill before the draft, and became Utah's number 1 target in that draft because of his ability.
Eventually, the Jazz renamed the drill as the 'Stockton Drill'. Last I checked, his record in the drill still stands.
So, in order to believe that Stockton "had no left" one would also have to believe that no player in Jazz history has had an effective left.
I don't know why people perpetuate nonsense from a parody channel that is known for its disdain toward both Stockton and Sloan (that channel, which I won't give free advertising to, even had a cover image a couple years for one of its videos that showed Jerry Sloan sitting on a couch drooling on himself; taunting Sloan's terrible physical decline).
Suffice to say, the story is a myth.

I wasn‘t aware that this part of „Stockalone“ was such a tough guy. Watching videos like this one I always love the thought of LeBron having to play in these rough times. Being a child of the 80s and 90s myself I remember my coach saying things like „not in my house“ and „no easy baskets“… I hope the NBA gets more physical again. Perhaps not with the hate of some former rivalries but getting back to physical defense especially in the paint.
After watching these clips of John Stockton it reminds me of how tough truly this man was! I have the utmost respect for his toughness and grittiness and whenever he was interviewed he always deflected praise on himself. Stockton was a quarterback for the jazz and other teams knew if they could hamper his game they had a good chance of beating them as Stockton went so did the Jazz. The man had great character on the court and he has great character off the court.
I got the opportunity to play a couple of pickup games on the same court as John. I couldn't believe how physical and competitive he was. The level of play was way below him but it didn't matter one bit to that dude. Competed for everything like a drowning man fighting for air.

I honestly feel like Stockton could've been the first player to play until he was 50 and perhaps even 55 years old. He is the most durable and toughest NBA player of all-time.

Nah it’s definitely Steph. Nobody has ever done what he’s done and probably never will. Steve Nash was John Stockton of our generation so his game can clearly be replicated. No disrespect to John but saying he’s the best point guard ever is just untrue lol
@@fifthdimension8142 I would say that Steph Curry is the best shooter of all time, and possibly the best scorer of all time! Those right there are two huge statements. What is the purpose of a point guard? To manage the floor, run the offense, distribute the ball, to pass!! And, he brought it on both sides of the court, Stockton was a great defender (most steals all time). To be honest it's not really a good comparison comparing Stockton & Curry. They are completely different players. Steph is the the best shooter ever. Stockton was the the best to ever run the point guard position. His assists and steals records will never be broken. Almost 20 seasons with as many missed games in his career. Made the playoffs every season. Best point guard ever.

I always loved passing more than scoring too, so Stockton was always my favorite PG growing up. Theres no better feeling in b-ball than a no look pass to an open cutter.

Saw Utah in Toronto in 1999 2nd row midcourt seats. Incredible to watch the Stockton-Malone pick and roll. And just how big Malone, Ostertag, Oakley and Willis were up close. And how small Stockton was in comparison. Tough bright player.
