The Search for an Eccentric Millionaire’s Hidden Treasure Chest | The New Yorker Documentary

  • In 2010, Forrest Fenn published a set of clues about a secret trove, estimated to be worth at least a million dollars, that he’d hidden in the Rocky Mountains. Sara Joe Wolansky’s documentary “Finding Fenn’s Gold” follows some of the treasure seekers, who were captivated by the mystery as much as the promise of riches.

It's all about the "Thrill of the Chase" road trips, open country, the smell of air at 8000 feet, wildlife encounters. "It was the best of times and the worst of times" just like Mr Dickens wrote, but I'm glad I did it.

Really great production!! I was an avid Fenn hunter and felt many of the same feelings when it was supposedly found. I will go to my grave with the belief that it was not found organically, and there is more to the story than we will ever know.

I think the greater legacy of this was that a man who was lonely found friendship and a community who were fascinated by the same subjects as him and through this treasure founded bonds for people who thought they would perhaps never find anyone like them in the world. I think that was the real treasure honestly.

The place was confirmed by Forrest Fenn before he passed, he knew time was running out and made sure his legacy would live on. The chest was found near Jelm mountain WY near Woods landing. The puzzle turned out that you must go through the poem three times, so there were three answers for every clue. TTOTC book was filled with hints cover to cover. The most important was knowledge he left out the D in the word on a bell, then he prayed for Ds and no one would listen, ring this bell and I will know, For whom the bell tolls.

You look at the aberrations, the hints, and find there truly is only one common thread - a thread that was very present in Forrest’s mind when he got cancer and every day after. A thread that affects us all, one that if you step back, you realize how precious it is.

Sure, a few people are still looking, but if “the spot” was public, many people would go. It’s possible that the Park itself wants Jack to keep it a secret. Would have been nice if Jack had just put something in place of the box with something unique that he would know for sure that it had been found. That way people that wanted to continue searching would have validation if they found the "spot" and he wouldn't have to give up the location and the hunt could continue. And if the next person did the same without exposing the location then at least it would have less disappointing effect on the people that spent years of their lives chasing. 🤔😎

The leaf appears to have been gnawed by vermin unfortunately, most likely a rabid marmot according to test results. I've conducted soil studies and taken samples of the most moist soil for potential Jack-tears, as we all know he cried in situ. If I could get Jack to offerup a DNA sample, there's the possibility we could foresnically confirm a match.

The video already adresses this. And no, most people that still research this hunt dont believe the official narrative that it was found by Jack Stuef, they believe Fenn had cancel it. Dal is interviewed in this video, so why dont The New Yorker admit that Fenn emailed Dal and said he was seriously considering canceling the hunt. Dal said he thinks Fenn shouldnt, and the topic was no longer discussed. A few months later, Fenn put a brief message saying it had been found "by someone back east". At first the finder was anonymous, but after criticism Jack Stuef of The Onion (of all places) stepped forward and said he was the finder. To this date, Jack says that the treasure is "in a vault in Santa Fe" (where Fenn lived and his family lives), why isnt Jack selling it to pay his student loans as he said he wanted to do?
