  • The DNA of ancient human remains in the United States may hold the answers to some of the most hotly debated questions in North American history. Danish professor Eske Willerslev has spent more than 10 years travelling around the US to study DNA data and what it can tell us about early humans. His encounters with Indigenous tribes, who are today fighting to have the remains of their ancestors reburied, forces Willerslev to reconsider his own position and possible biases in his interpretation of the ambiguous data. His objective ideals as a scientist are put to the test as he is confronted with ethical and personal dilemmas. Remains is a documentary film by Linus Mork.

We _all_ have intrinsic bias towards one thing or another - a group, culture, religion, music, food, favorite color, etc, usually without us even realizing it. When it is brought to our attention, as in this documentary, we try to learn from it and overcome our bias. At least, the smart, empathetic folks do who want to move on to a better world.

Racism is a loaded word, implying intent to diminish others. This particular scientist was shown to be respectful, persistent, curious, and open to discovery. His discovery completely turned a previous foundational notion about the origins of peoples on its head. That's a big deal. Very big.
If we're going to categorize an entire group of people as if they're all alike, any group, alike in a particularly simplistic and negative way, isn't that kind of the same kind of thinking as racism? That's a rhetorical question, btw.

He definitely crossed a line. Although I am glad that he did apologized and admitted his heinous mistake, which is something most Scientists won't do. Scientists need to give reverence to the generational knowledge that's been shared with them and realize and acknowledge the damage to our already struggling communities when they ignore that information. Like the one Native woman said, "Science has always been used in a detrimental way against Natives." Our communities have suffered enough under Colonization and we shouldn't have to continually fight for our place in our own land. The Genocide of our people is on-going even today.

She was a Pazyryk shaman, the people of Altai believe her remains protect them and they insisted for many years, so much that the government had to send her back to Altai in 2012 but she is not home, she is in a museum. Read about the 'musket wars' and who bought in all of the musket (not whiteys - the evil missionaries refused to give them any WMD), where up to 20% of the population were genocided by each other for 20 years and up to just before a treaty between Victoria and Maori was signed in 1840...the Maori were not a nation prior - they were warring tribes (wanting more land, wealth, power) who enslaved, displaced and cannibalised each other (two Taranaki tribes invaded and wiped out the pacifist Mori Ori in the Chatham Islands). The truth is Maori were as bad, if not worse, to each other as the evil whitey invaders...

In the end, science studies the atoms, spirituality studies the connection. This connection between two atoms forms a molecule that grows into an organism. This comes to creation, thinking, expressing, emotion, history. Words cannot capture the deepness of this matter. Indo-European, Polynesian, another branch... Its just words. We all walk on the shoulders of our ancestors, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. But energy doesnt die nor in science nor in spirituality, a spirit, or connection, whats in a word, doesnt die. Hence the apprehension of the tribes. Hence the rationality of the Danish guy. Maybe pre-colonization native governance would have been better than Europeans to an extent, but no human group is without flaws or injustice. European flaws are just more visible because that's what we're more familiar with. Now, the effects of inter-generational trauma and intercultural politics have taken quite a toll on native populations, so their administration isn't actually that great. The only reason they didn't impact the land as much was because their population size was relatively small in comparison. That's not to say that there weren't aspects of native life that were considerate of the land or respectful toward it. For what it's worth though, Europe used to be comprised of hunter gatherer tribes too. We're all natives from somewhere, who evolved alongside nature and relied on it to survive. We all come from the Creator. Yet people are people, whether they live in cities or small tribes - they have their squabbles, fights, hierarchies, etc. Native tribes were not always at peace with each other, and there was not complete equality. White people aren’t the only ones to blame for disrespecting native cultures in America or elsewhere anyway. For example native Americans face a lot of racism from afrocentrists who have been trying to delegitimize our very existence, on top of that there is unfortunately prejudice between different indigenous cultures, for example there has been an ongoing effort among Aztecs to claim that the territory of Alta California was their land, hence part of the argument that California belongs to Mexico, they don’t like to admit that Alta California was home to numerous indigenous cultures and none of them were Aztec and when they do admit it, they disrespect them by calling them weak and deserving of being conquered, now not everyone that’s Aztec is like this, and prejudice among different tribes exists across the continents and isn’t limited to them. Even among the old Aztec empire their were regional differences in culture and beliefs which were in some cases contradictory to each other, an example of human variance. Framing an entire group in one way is just projecting more prejudice, we have enough of it in this world as is, let’s not keep adding to the pile.

James Chatters (5:37 & 28:55) is actually the 'scientist' who first gained access to The Ancient One (Kennewick Man) shortly after he was found, & prevented Indigenous people from returning their ancestor to the earth & providing a dignified resting place.
Chatters was the first 'scientist' who claimed The Ancient One presented 'caucasoid traits & lacked definitive Native-American characteristics'. Based on this spurious claim, Indigenous nations were denied proper claim & control over the remains of their ancestor. Of course a few years later, more detailed scientific study proved the Ancient One was absolutely Indigenous, & Chatters was either ignorant or intentionally lying.
In the clips in this video, Chatters is tacitly advising Willerslev to lie by omission to these Indigenous nations, in order to get hands on more of their ancestors for more testing. Is it any wonder Indigenous people don't trust anthropologists & scientists who claim they're 'only here to help'.

The tradition there is that you pin the bear's head high up in a tree, overlooking where the bear had its hunting grounds. I refused and instead took the bear's head with me home as a trophy. Back home, everything started to go wrong for me, and I suffered terrible nightmares. In Siberia the trappers had told me, if I didn't hang up the head as required, all the bears in the world would know about it and hate me for it. I then took a trip to our summer house in Sweden and pinned up the bear's head in a tree there, and the nightmares stopped."

As a son to a Native American, and father to Native Amazonian children, (and over ten years of university) did you check which way the footprints were facing? There's the profoundly ethnocentric presumption that we Native folks came from this possible "Proto-European" and we might've originated from the Eurasian continent? There's no "European" continent, that's an ideological construct. There's another presumption that the Bering Land Bridge is anything other than a theory.
Perhaps, it's quite the opposite, that the peoples of the Eurasian continent originated from the "American" continent? Maybe, Mr. Proto-Euro came from here. There's a vast array of physical evidence, burial sites and such, and theories that could give a much broader insight that might pre-date much of Human history...from this continent. However, this's normally, and consistently, overlooked in regards to the dogmatic, and highly-controlled structure, of Materialist Scientism, and to the demi-gods of Academia that filter what is acceptable information on Human ancestry to the general public (according to their studies and career) which in turn is delivered through Western industrial technology via media outlets without much criticism, such as Al Jazeera.
I'd suggest that the profoundly deep-seated, and cognitive dissonance, of Western Materialism dislocates indigenous peoples of the Americas in time and space--and the dimensions of culture. It's a normal process of a dominant culture's belief to be blindly unaware of its abstract notions of reality, and that its abstract belief(s) should be unequivocally shared by those that they've displaced, dominate, and study. The dominate paradigm restricts specific studies, and thus by dint of restriction, the overall picture is detrimentally skewed towards their, what has now become, perspective. Reality is again inexorably bent towards the excised theory, and thus, we have truncated, and insipid, titles stating that the "truth" has now been uncovered.

It's definitely a possibility that the footsteps went the other way. Likely they pointed many ways over time. Not being a specialist in this field it's difficult for me to judge which is true. I accept the possibility that Caucasian scientists may have a Eurocentric interpretation of data, but the out-of-Africa theory certainly is not Eurocentric.

    • @BCooperArtMind
      @BCooperArtMind Před 3 měsíci +2

@@katherinetutschek4757 Thank you for your comment. First, let me qualify myself, I'm not picking on Caucasian peoples (my Mom is white), specifically, but the institutions that have grown from the Western system of thought and education, research and philosophy. I'd suggest that the Origins of Man as proposed by Western Scientism is completely wrong. I'm not being extreme in this declaration. There's an incredibly wide diversity of physical evidence that never sees the light of day because it doesn't fit within the highly-controlled paradigm of the career-oriented scholars, and the system of Western educational filtration.
Many digs here in the Americas and throughout the world have found evidence of a much older Human timeline that precedes the ethnocentric Out-of-Africa theory. If we took time to educate ourselves beyond the delineated lines of mainstream Scientism, and its proclivity to own and control the flow of information, and thus, normalize our perception without critical thought. We could begin to encompass theories that are more attune to a healthy and critical view of our origins.
I studied many years in the university anthropology and archeology and various other disciplines. As you move deeper within the educational system an inherent politics occurs. Professorship, tenure, subjects to be studied, all strictly supervised by those who control the information, based on a long career of specific theories. New information that can move the narrative from a stale, lifeless theory, is snuffed out or ridiculed. Especially, something that radically shifts the paradigm. The prevailing and dominate postulations on the Origin of Man are theories, not facts. We need to remember this so we can keep stepping forward into unknown territory to better understand our origins.

@@BCooperArtMind I'll have to take your word that there is evidence for an older human timeline, as I have not formally studied these subjects. I do agree that as you move higher up in education and try to get funding/tenure etc. there is pressure to say what those at the top want to hear. They can be challenged only in "acceptable" ways. Unfortunately, it is so common in science (and elsewhere) that things contrary to the prevailing ways of thinking are often disregarded.
I certainly agree that science at any point in time is just a partial view of the whole picture. And sometimes not an accurate one. That doesn't mean though that science should be disregarded completely.
However, I disagree that the out-of-Africa theory is ethnocentric. Unless you just mean that it's a theory postlated by scientists in the West, or because it is Africa-centric. Saying that Native Americans came from Asia, or that they may have some European blood, or that ethnicities other than direct ancestors to today's native Americans may have set foot on the continent at some point in the ancient past is not because Europeans want to be at the centre of everything or can't imagine a world that doesn't involve them. It's based on a geographic path from Africa to North America. It makes sense for Europe and Asia to be populated first. Not saying it couldn't have happened a different way, but scientists came to this conclusion by following the trail of data. Data is always changing and growing, as are theories, so the data may reveal a different path eventually, but sometimes I feel people read ethnocentrism into anything Europeans/white ppl do just because they don't like certain aspects of our history. Maybe it's true there are established ways of thinking in the academic community, but I would not call out-of-Africa ethnocentrism in the usual sense of the word.

Amid disagreements over native ceremonies and beliefs which came into direct conflict with the Catholic church and other Christian religions, North American indigenous tribes and peoples have been praised for supporting the United States military to defend their land against terrorism. Ultimately, peace is the goal for all against dangerous criminality and forced fundamentalist radical hate groups factions; be they Islamic, Christian, or Satanic. Elders from tribes throughout history have legally sought and written laws to protect their people. One of the last conversations Russell Means supported was the fact that we needed more Native lawyers to continue to safeguard generations in Washington. Natives need to advocate legally for themselves inside of how the laws have been written establishing continued protection for our lands. Russell Means was right in his recommendation. Haaland is not able to do this alone. Even she is a minority in her own domain who succumbs to corporate dominance. The best thing about individuals, tribes, and governance working together is that cultural heritage can be preserved and studied for the future.

Although the scientific motivation of this study seems unbiased. It strikes the conscience to think that it’s always the same narrative of white European/American men in science thinking that indigenous people are their project or that they have to validate their history/identity.
Clearly Native Americans were here first no matter how much distortion of history this country has attempted to uphold. White European colonial settlers and white Americans before/after the US established its sovereignty committed genocide to the native peoples of this land. Now if you need to prove yourself who came “before” them, for purposes that are not logically sounding to begin with then you’re part of the problem. If you have to use the law of a country that has oppressed and stolen even looted Native Americans over and over again to fulfill your scientific fetish then you are no different from any one making stupid and racist claims about Native Americans. Respect their rights and their word (consent). Do not excavate and meddle with the remains of their people!!!! Especially if they do not consent to it the first time!!!

First it was through warfare, that failed. In fact you use our heros to name your cars...Pontiac was the nickname of an Odawa warrior, Obwaandi'eyaag. The most feared sniper in World War One was an Ojibwe like myself from Ontario. With almost 20 countries involved, Francis Pegahmagabow had 378 confirmed kills and captured 300 prisoners of war.
      Let that sink in.
They tried to starve us to death but they failed. They killed around 63 million buffalo, sold their hides and let the meat rot in massive piles while they held the Indians on reservations starving at gunpoint.
They have tried for over 150 years to eliminate us through legislation. Kidnap, beat, rape and kill the savage out of us. Teach us to be good Christians😂
Why would they want to teach us to read and write and become doctors and teachers and lawyers? Idiots.
My people were hunting buffalo with spears around the western side of the great lakes on the edge of the prairies while the sands Jesus stood on in Israel were still boulders in the Himalayas.

I really don't feel he was questioning whether natives were annihilated by Europeans, or whether natives were in the Americas for thousands of years. That's common accepted historical and scientific fact. It's also the current commonly accepted scientific theory that natives came over a land bridge from Asia. The question he seemed to want to clarify was how closely related the native North Americans of today are to the original settlers from Asia/Europe, and whether natives actually came from Asia or originated in the Americas like some natives believe. To me that shows open-mindedness, and that he is seeking the truth and going where the data takes him rather than sticking to previous theories. Like with the Kennewick Man. Caucasians look for scientific proof of their own oral and written histories too. It's definitely important to preserve native culture and historical artifacts, but whether or not to subject the skeletons to testing is up to the native tribes, and they allowed him to perform the tests.

@@CBPunisher1900 - I see that you are undereducated regarding the history between the European invaders of the Americas and the way they treated Native People, from the Artic to Patagonia. Driving people from their land, enslaving them, outright murdering them was done by those of European descent, frequently as policy.
In the North American colonies alone you have examples of ethnic cleansing, by distributing to Natives, blankets infected with small pox.
Another horrifying example was the Sullivan-Clinton-Brodhead Campaign in 1779 sent out by George Washington to destroy the villages and crops of those in the Iroquois Confederacy who were British Loyalists. They were also to bring back as many prisoners as possible. The 4,500 troops not only destroyed villages loyal to the British, but also those that were neutral and _even allies._ They killed men, women, children, infants, and the elderly. They slashed and burned all the crops and animals they could find. They did not return with prisoners as ordered, though. Can you guess why?

You make it sound like ancient European man was “White.” They were not. You can call the ancients by whatever names you want. The color of their skin is irrelevant. Skin color is not culture.
Go ahead - track the movement of people through time using DNA. It tells you nothing about their culture or beliefs. And just because a group of people thousands of years ago occupied the area of land that we TODAY call Europe does not make them European!!!!
We have only recently adjusted the occupation timelines for the Americas and it’s still guessing. So little archeology was done in the U.S. because they did not want “America” to be perceived as having taken over the land from someone else. The narrative was that “the New World” was mostly virgin, unoccupied territory with a smattering of small, primitive tribes. Good way to keep people from looking for anything. It’s hard to find something you never go looking for. But the land was occupied by millions of Native Peoples and the Europeans were the invaders at that time. The “Europeans” from 500 years ago are NOT the same people who occupied the region 10,000 years ago.

It's now well-known that there were a variety of migrations into the Americas from Asia (which may have even included some largely sea-based migrations along the coasts on boats, which explains why Chile has the second oldest known site in the Americas after New Mexico).
Asia is next to Europe, so it's not surprising that SOME of the populations entering the Americas MAY have been of partial European descent. I am unsure why Willerslev seemed to be immediately trying to connect the results from ONE of these POTENTIAL migratory populations to seemingly ALL Indigenous groups today. That suggestion would be absurd based on one or even several samples. I am glad his final conclusion that there was a final unique group that emerged that became the ancestors of Indigenous peoples today--a conclusion that is far more interesting and accurate.
