- The DNA of ancient human remains in the United States may hold the answers to some of the most hotly debated questions in North American history. Danish professor Eske Willerslev has spent more than 10 years travelling around the US to study DNA data and what it can tell us about early humans. His encounters with Indigenous tribes, who are today fighting to have the remains of their ancestors reburied, forces Willerslev to reconsider his own position and possible biases in his interpretation of the ambiguous data. His objective ideals as a scientist are put to the test as he is confronted with ethical and personal dilemmas. Remains is a documentary film by Linus Mork.

If you are going to make any assertions then you need to do so within the entirety of Native Americans. Not all Tribes have any immigration routes and have singular blood phenal types not found anywhere else in the world.
Doing one test isn't conclusive.

Since Oct 2023 , I & family had stopped tuning to CNN , MSNBC, Fox & some other mainstream western medias. Al Jazeera & some other independant media seems to give more informative & balance news.
Al Jazeera is underrated and unappreciated precisely because of its bold and courageous determination to tell the story of the ENTIRE world truthfully and unapologetically. It could do more in respect of the repressive and autocratic regimes of the Arab world, but who bites the finger that feeds her? Despite that, however, it routinely and daringly puts western lamestream media into shame.

In the first minutes of the video, the dichotomy between the professors' excitement and desperate desire to test the bones juxtaposed with the Klamath Tribal Leaders calm knowing that these bones are his people's ancestors, was palpable. The scientists excited desire to have the bones tested to scientifically prove their genetic connections to modern populations, was also juxtaposed with the Tribal Elders calm knowing and lack of care what the rest of the world thinks. His calm sense of knowing was amazingly relaxed and beautiful.
It's cus who they trying to prove, when they don't need to know, because the creator already seen it.

In this world, there are things in an organisation that are biased for some and unbiased for some.
We shouldn't believe and trust everything of an organisation.
For ex: international media in war between Ukraine and Russia, it's unbiased (but there are some exceptions) and when it comes to Israel of killing innocent civilians, it's totally biased.

And as he said at the end dna evidence is showing they themselves are ancestors of a group from even further back that split off into about three groups. I agree they prob are but we need more dna evidence to show they definitely weren’t alone. There could’ve been other peoples/ dna in what’s now Alaska, Canada, US, Mexico but they were prob the majority. Other channels exploring the history from diff angles and cover the history not shown by most media.
Such a brilliant documentary! As an Afrikan I can relate, but what I found amazing was that in this documentary we see racist euro-american scientists, who ultimately eat humble pie because in this instance, the one honest European scientist actually admitted his personal biases in making wrong conclusions...NOT SO "OBJECTUVE AFTER ALL RIGHT? But atoeast he was honest enough to correct himself and to reveal the archilles heal of euro-american science...RACISM!!!

I wouldn't call the geneticist "racist", but biased. We _all_ have intrinsic bias towards one thing or another - a group, culture, religion, music, food, favorite color, etc, usually without us even realizing it. When it is brought to our attention, as in this documentary, we try to learn from it and overcome our bias. At least, the smart, empathetic folks do who want to move on to a better world.

This scientist person also claimed that Europeans are the ancestors people of the natives peoples even though both Europeans and natives peoples of North America, Central and South America are very diverse ethnic groups of peoples not only that they look nothing like the Europeans peoples honestly they look more like Asian peoples than European peoples but they're not ethnic related to Asian populations either.
The first test results was the correct one each ethnic groups of peoples from each continental are closely related to one another due to intermarried other are actually ethnic related to one another like for example the vast majority of East Asians and Southeast Asians are genetically related to Lao people.
Racism is a loaded word, implying intent to diminish others. This particular scientist was shown to be respectful, persistent, curious, and open to discovery. His discovery completely turned a previous foundational notion about the origins of peoples on its head. That's a big deal. Very big.
If we're going to categorize an entire group of people as if they're all alike, any group, alike in a particularly simplistic and negative way, isn't that kind of the same kind of thinking as racism? That's a rhetorical question, btw.

The Smithsonian Institute is responsible for much of the collection and display of ancient remains. And we cannot forget the LIVE displays in their human zoo exhibits in the late 1800s, along with their scientific racism (eugenics). It has been an obsession with white power and an orchestrated effort since the beginning! You NEVER disturb the ancestors. As a Shoshone from Duckwater it was hard watching some of this, especially about spirit mountain. He got what was coming to him and i guarantee he wont be doing things like that anymore, our people are powerful and his testimony about the possession could be a documentary in itself.

Watching this was difficult. His enthusiasm was contagious. But it felt to me like he was cutting my own mother up in an effort to prove something that doesn't need proven. It made me sick feeling. My people, (E Shoshone) have always been here. This is something you just know.
He definitely crossed a line. Although I am glad that he did apologized and admitted his heinous mistake, which is something most Scientists won't do. Scientists need to give reverence to the generational knowledge that's been shared with them and realize and acknowledge the damage to our already struggling communities when they ignore that information. Like the one Native woman said, "Science has always been used in a detrimental way against Natives." Our communities have suffered enough under Colonization and we shouldn't have to continually fight for our place in our own land. The Genocide of our people is on-going even today.
Amazing and powerful documentary, as a Chilean its easy to relate. Similar history, everywhere. It is so sad, but we can´t change history. Only learn and not repeat. One detail: Seems like Alexei Tikhonov did not know that the people in Altai, Siberia, got very upset about the remains of the Siberian Ice Maiden. She was a Pazyryk shaman, the people of Altai believe her remains protect them and they insisted for many years, so much that the government had to send her back to Altai in 2012 but she is not home, she is in a museum. What happened, and most importantly, what continues to happen in the present. My children are Shuar and Quichua, they struggle daily in the Amazon against the ravages of "Modern" society. They're losing their language and their culture, but we continue to resist, after all these years. We're still here. Genocide takes many shapes as it progresses in time, and since we're still here, and being displaced, it continues.

Amazing, profound documentary! Eske Willerslev is known for is imoeccable work and integrity, so that makes this story all the more important. He is a human being with heart to change his perspective on the ancestors' remains once he found out their status within the tribes' culture and beliefs, treating them with respect and helping to repatriate them for burial.
He is also a true scientist, who follows where the evidence leads, and can admit his mistakes, even at great personal cost.
Lastly, this is most importantly about the struggle of the First Nations to regain everything that was stolen from them. I hope that this video gets widely viewed, and that people's knowledge and empathy grows.

In the end, science studies the atoms, spirituality studies the connection. This connection between two atoms forms a molecule that grows into an organism. This documentary would be a great, educational movie that would have the most impact on dismissing all the other "data" trying to prove the indigenous people of the Americas were not the first people of the land. I cried during the last half of this video and I am SO glad it has been made available. This was a nail biter. I loved "the people's" way and knowing. I give credit to this man for having the guts to be honest - who does this? Especially someone who has a professional reputation to protect. Thank you so much for this documentary!!! I NEVER expected the twists and turns and the depth of SO much in the people's history. The US government has even to this day continued to find ways to destroy their culture, way of life, etc.

@@erenjaeger1738 Even chimps have a culture, birds have a culture, ants have a culture, but many native societies were in collapse due to drastic population loss from new contagious diseases, including most importantly, their elder generation who were the memory keepers. In addition, many groups got displaced and were living as refugees in an attempt to escape slave raids. Between forced emigration and disease decimation, many Indian groups in the East were in chaos. This appeared to urban Europeans as it was...disorganized, erratic and reactionary, compared to the stratified and highly restrained city life they had just come from.
This is a powerful documentary! I can't wait to tell anybody who will listen. Not only should indigenous people receive their historical and ancestral remains, they should get their land back too.

The common ancestors shared by Europeans and Indigenous Americans are known as Ancient North Eurasians. There is no date attached to his presentation so it’s possible that his findings predate all of the genetic research demonstrating these common ancestors.

Just because you find bones in Siberia that are partially European and part Native American does not prove that Native Americans came from Europe. It only proves that the two populations met some time in the past. Why do Europeans think that the land bridge was only a one way corridor? We know now that there were Native Americans in North America thousands of years before the "Clovis Culture". Is it impossible to believe that maybe some of the Native Americans crossed the Bering Strait and populated Siberia? At least he could admit his prejudice.

The real answer for better relations with the tribes and the archaeological community is to offer scholarships to the youth.
The optics of another white person coming to disturb their ancestors understandably raises questions.
Eventually, Native American researchers would be publishing their own findings. That’s what reconciliation looks like.
I was thinking the same thing. The optics look bad because he's white, but if it were a native researcher it would be better. I don't know how many natives go into this line of work. A lot of places save seats for native students at university and subsidize their tuition but enrolment in higher education still isn't high unless they were raised off the reservation. It seems like some native leaders aren't interested in genetic ancestry though, regardless of who's doing it.

If you mean ownership in the sense of conservation, you are probably right. But if you mean ownership in terms of governance of the country/continent, I kinda disagree. Maybe pre-colonization native governance would have been better than Europeans to an extent, but no human group is without flaws or injustice. European flaws are just more visible because that's what we're more familiar with. Now, the effects of inter-generational trauma and intercultural politics have taken quite a toll on native populations, so their administration isn't actually that great. I am speaking in general terms obviously, there are capable individuals too, but having administrative experience with native tribes, I can tell you many tribes do not run things particularly well.

@@Crayz919 I don't have exact stats for North American natives, but scientists have done studies on current hunter gatherer groups who still live in the traditional way, and discovered that aboriginal ways of life are often no more sustainable than those of the modern day. The only reason they didn't impact the land as much was because their population size was relatively small in comparison. That's not to say that there weren't aspects of native life that were considerate of the land or respectful toward it. For what it's worth though, Europe used to be comprised of hunter gatherer tribes too. We're all natives from somewhere, who evolved alongside nature and relied on it to survive. I am partly Haudenosaunee on my Mother's Parents side (Grandfather is part Mohawk, and Grandmother is partly Seneca - Wolf Clan).
I hold that studying all of our ancestors is the greatest honor we can bestow on them. It brings them back from obscurity, back from the dead. To not study them and try to restore their stories says that they are worthless to us, not worth the effort, like garbage to be tossed and forgotten about. To not study them is to dishonor them.

He invented that whole new field of genetic study and has found DNA in soil going back 2,000,000 years. It is mind-blowing. We are all one people on Earth - untangling the web of relationships would be wonderful. The Native Nations would then find way, way more ancestors to call their own.

Not all. Europe is a vast place with many different ethnicities and cultures and each are filled with individuals. Many whites have been hostile towards other groups, many whites haven’t. White people aren’t the only ones to blame for disrespecting native cultures in America or elsewhere anyway. For example native Americans face a lot of racism from afrocentrists who have been trying to delegitimize our very existence, on top of that there is unfortunately prejudice between different indigenous cultures, for example there has been an ongoing effort among Aztecs to claim that the territory of Alta California was their land, hence part of the argument that California belongs to Mexico, they don’t like to admit that Alta California was home to numerous indigenous cultures and none of them were Aztec and when they do admit it, they disrespect them by calling them weak and deserving of being conquered, now not everyone that’s Aztec is like this, and prejudice among different tribes exists across the continents and isn’t limited to them. Even among the old Aztec empire their were regional differences in culture and beliefs which were in some cases contradictory to each other, an example of human variance. Framing an entire group in one way is just projecting more prejudice, we have enough of it in this world as is, let’s not keep adding to the pile.

They also own cultural heritage artifacts. So a gold-miner can bulldoze my house to access subsurface minerals. I can harvest trees, but in order to sell even my own subsurface materials, I'd have to file a mining claim, file for a business license, rezone the land, and pay taxes on the proceeds. But if I dig an outhouse hole and turn up a mammoth tusk, or a human hand, my place would be crawling with government funded researchers and archaeologists. As a son to a Native American, and father to Native Amazonian children, (and over ten years of university) did you check which way the footprints were facing? There's the profoundly ethnocentric presumption that we Native folks came from this possible "Proto-European" and we might've originated from the Eurasian continent? There's no "European" continent, that's an ideological construct. There's another presumption that the Bering Land Bridge is anything other than a theory.
Perhaps, it's quite the opposite, that the peoples of the Eurasian continent originated from the "American" continent? It's definitely a possibility that the footsteps went the other way. Likely they pointed many ways over time. Not being a specialist in this field it's difficult for me to judge which is true. I accept the possibility that Caucasian scientists may have a Eurocentric interpretation of data, but the out-of-Africa theory certainly is not Eurocentric.

I do agree that as you move higher up in education and try to get funding/tenure etc. there is pressure to say what those at the top want to hear. They can be challenged only in "acceptable" ways. I certainly agree that science at any point in time is just a partial view of the whole picture. And sometimes not an accurate one. That doesn't mean though that science should be disregarded completely.
However, I disagree that the out-of-Africa theory is ethnocentric. Unless you just mean that it's a theory postlated by scientists in the West, or because it is Africa-centric. Saying that Native Americans came from Asia, or that they may have some European blood, or that ethnicities other than direct ancestors to today's native Americans may have set foot on the continent at some point in the ancient past is not because Europeans want to be at the centre of everything or can't imagine a world that doesn't involve them. It's based on a geographic path from Africa to North America. It makes sense for Europe and Asia to be populated first. Not saying it couldn't have happened a different way, but scientists came to this conclusion by following the trail of data. Data is always changing and growing, as are theories, so the data may reveal a different path eventually, but sometimes I feel people read ethnocentrism into anything Europeans/white ppl do just because they don't like certain aspects of our history. Maybe it's true there are established ways of thinking in the academic community, but I would not call out-of-Africa ethnocentrism in the usual sense of the word.

I don't have any indigeous blood, but have always felt such a strong connection to Native American Indians, especially the Navajo and Hopi nations. I also spent a short time with the Inuits in Alaska. All such incredible beings. I always feel such reverence when interacting with them.

There a book that I’m reading about White Buffalo Women and it talks about our medicine (spirituality) “Letting the Spirit be the judge was a traditional practice of native people in the distant past. If someone from outside their clan or tribe comes to them seeking spiritual knowledge, they knew that they had no right to judge this person or their spiritual intent. My first thought as I watched was: Would it have been equally valid to say that Europeans and Native Americans have a common ancestor rather than one having derived from the other? I like the way the documentary slowly opened itself up to different viewpoints. It's like a journey in humility.
But honestly...how much "humility" did he ACTUALLY "journey into Humility"??? I thought he was just feeling some self-pity that may. have given off a momentary appearance of "humility"...if that is what it was, it did NOT last very long!

One of the last conversations Russell Means supported was the fact that we needed more Native lawyers to continue to safeguard generations in Washington. Natives need to advocate legally for themselves inside of how the laws have been written establishing continued protection for our lands. Russell Means was right in his recommendation. Haaland is not able to do this alone. Even she is a minority in her own domain who succumbs to corporate dominance. The best thing about individuals, tribes, and governance working together is that cultural heritage can be preserved and studied for the future.

Although the scientific motivation of this study seems unbiased. It strikes the conscience to think that it’s always the same narrative of white European/American men in science thinking that indigenous people are their project or that they have to validate their history/identity.
Clearly Native Americans were here first no matter how much distortion of history this country has attempted to uphold. White European colonial settlers and white Americans before/after the US established its sovereignty committed genocide to the native peoples of this land. Now if you need to prove yourself who came “before” them, for purposes that are not logically sounding to begin with then you’re part of the problem. This Dutchman makes me cringe right away- I'm sure he has pure intentions as a scientist, but speaking as a European-America--- anyone who still says they need any evidence or 'convincing' that we annihilated people who had been here thousands of years who came from Asia... such people are NOT acting or speaking in good faith, and nor do they usually believe in science, anyway. I really don't feel he was questioning whether natives were annihilated by Europeans, or whether natives were in the Americas for thousands of years. That's common accepted historical and scientific fact. It's also the current commonly accepted scientific theory that natives came over a land bridge from Asia. The question he seemed to want to clarify was how closely related the native North Americans of today are to the original settlers from Asia/Europe, and whether natives actually came from Asia or originated in the Americas like some natives believe. To me that shows open-mindedness, and that he is seeking the truth and going where the data takes him rather than sticking to previous theories. Like with the Kennewick Man. Caucasians look for scientific proof of their own oral and written histories too. It's definitely important to preserve native culture and historical artifacts, but whether or not to subject the skeletons to testing is up to the native tribes, and they allowed him to perform the tests.

Does anyone know when this documentary was made? If it said so in the doc, I missed it. It doesn't mention the White Sands, New Mexico, footprints at all. (They are from 23,000 years ago.)

We are all human and share common ancestors but there are groups who have fought to discredit and delegitimize indigenous people’s claims to the Americas by saying that we weren’t here first, that we ourselves were later colonizers, or even that we never existed in the first place and were made up. Some natives aren’t bothered as they know their history and don’t care what others say, but others like myself know that factual scientific evidence that proves our existence is another form of protection for us and our cultures.
Do you really not understand why this knowledge is so important? So much history was lost when the white Europeans genocided 90% of the indigenous population, don't you see why it's important to recover as much history as we can?

Driving people from their land, enslaving them, outright murdering them was done by those of European descent, frequently as policy.
In the North American colonies alone you have examples of ethnic cleansing, by distributing to Natives, blankets infected with small pox.
Another horrifying example was the Sullivan-Clinton-Brodhead Campaign in 1779 sent out by George Washington to destroy the villages and crops of those in the Iroquois Confederacy who were British Loyalists. They were also to bring back as many prisoners as possible. The 4,500 troops not only destroyed villages loyal to the British, but also those that were neutral and _even allies._ They killed men, women, children, infants, and the elderly. They slashed and burned all the crops and animals they could find. They did not return with prisoners as ordered, though. Can you guess why?
Over 5,000 survivors fled to Fort Niagara in Canada. With the shortage of food and an especially harsh winter (unrelenting cold and 8 feet of snow), 1,000s died of starvation and exposure.

You make it sound like ancient European man was “White.” They were not. You can call the ancients by whatever names you want. The color of their skin is irrelevant. Skin color is not culture.
Go ahead - track the movement of people through time using DNA. It tells you nothing about their culture or beliefs. And just because a group of people thousands of years ago occupied the area of land that we TODAY call Europe does not make them European!!!!
We have only recently adjusted the occupation timelines for the Americas and it’s still guessing. So little archeology was done in the U.S. because they did not want “America” to be perceived as having taken over the land from someone else. The narrative was that “the New World” was mostly virgin, unoccupied territory with a smattering of small, primitive tribes. Good way to keep people from looking for anything. It’s hard to find something you never go looking for. But the land was occupied by millions of Native Peoples and the Europeans were the invaders at that time. The “Europeans” from 500 years ago are NOT the same people who occupied the region 10,000 years ago.
This documentary needs a part two to include the Aboriginal American Indians (copper colored Indians reclassified to black, mullato, negro and now African American) of the Northeast and Southeast of America. Our Ancestors experienced massive genocide physically and through paper reclassification genocide which killed the Indian and preserved the men, women and children to chattel slavery. Only showing the plains Indians of the west coast is not considering the whole ancient history of the American Indian and what settler colonialism did to our ancestors. I do appreciate your work on this journey.

I was watching an archeologist who said we shouldn’t rebury human remains, and that they should be studied instead. I wonder why anyone would be so dismissive of how people feel.
Only now, when there are very few left of the tens of millions of people that shaped the landscape of two continents, is it even safe to be Native American. Only now that they can’t threaten western cultural domination, they are allowed a voice at all, and there are archeologists that can’t even respect that.
It's now well-known that there were a variety of migrations into the Americas from Asia (which may have even included some largely sea-based migrations along the coasts on boats, which explains why Chile has the second oldest known site in the Americas after New Mexico).
Asia is next to Europe, so it's not surprising that SOME of the populations entering the Americas MAY have been of partial European descent. I am unsure why Willerslev seemed to be immediately trying to connect the results from ONE of these POTENTIAL migratory populations to seemingly ALL Indigenous groups today. That suggestion would be absurd based on one or even several samples. I am glad his final conclusion that there was a final unique group that emerged that became the ancestors of Indigenous peoples today--a conclusion that is far more interesting and accurate.
Becuase all native groups are genetically very close to each other. the Americas are the least gentically diverse race on earth and the youngest one too.

It is likely more accurate to say the Americas are one of the newest locations to be massively populated. 20-25,000 years ago (as footprints in New Mexico prove) is nothing to sneeze at though.

I am biracial and both of my bloodlines have been on this continent for hundreds of years. Neither of those bloodlines are native to this land. In order for me to enjoy all of the privileges I enjoy, we had to feast on the blood of all those who weren't like us. And of course we would start our empire with genocide. We had to set a precedent in order to uphold our true values, which are American exceptionalism, White supremacy, capitalism, and shoot first, ask questions later. And we did it all with the chattel slavery imposed upon generations of my ancestors. This is America.
