- Al Jazeera investigates the shocking truth behind a deadly Israeli attack on a US naval vessel.
In 1967, at the height of the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War, the Israeli Air Force launched an unprovoked attack on the USS Liberty, a US Navy spy ship that was monitoring the conflict from the safety of international waters in the Mediterranean.
Israeli jet fighters hit the vessel with rockets, cannon fire and napalm, before three Israeli torpedo boats moved in to launch a second more devastating attack. Though she did not sink, the Liberty was badly damaged. Thirty-four US servicemen and civilian analysts were killed, another 171 were wounded.
Later Israel apologised for what it claimed to be a tragic case of mistaken identity. It said that it had believed the ship to be hostile Egyptian naval vessel. US President Lyndon Johnson was privately furious but publicly the White House chose not to challenge the word of its closest Middle East ally and accepted that the attack had been a catastrophic accident.
However, as this exclusive Al Jazeera investigation reveals, fresh evidence throws new light on exactly what happened that fateful day - and the remarkable cover up that followed.

Absolutely disgusting. Im 37 years old, US Air Force Veteran, this is the first time I've ever heard of this. The older I get, the more I realize everything you think you know isn't what you thought. There is a history I've recently found that is not circulating well, but I suspect soon will, that tells of Arab leader Husseini's alliance with Hitler. It explains a lot of the hatred against a Palestinian state that once rang with anti-Jewish propaganda, which likely still fuels the rage of Israeli's.
It doesn't condone violence, of course, but I think we really need to spend more time with the history of this conflict before taking sides, as this is how conflicts get perpetuated. We need a better conversation with the people on every side who are responsible and that won't be possible without the backstory.
And, of course, people need to calm tf down so we can actually have a conversation. The UN, NATO, and the US need to lock arms and force a cease-fire immediately so it can begin.

The motive for the attack on the Liberty is primarily believed to have been an effort to prevent the US and the world from learning of Israeli war crimes which the Liberty may have uncovered during their communication surveillance. Those war crimes included the execution of Egyptian prisoners of war who the Israelis did not want to hold captive as it would have slowed down some of their Pearl Harbor-like war efforts. They wanted to sink the Liberty and kill all on board to eliminate the possibility of such communications being revealed. It's also believed that they would have in turn blamed Egypt for the attack had they fully succeeded in their plan in order to bring the US into the war on their side.
Zionists are evil people and Israel was formed through their oppression and terror campaigns with the US being complicit for most of that journey.

In June 1967 I was in college and had five Israeli room mates. They were in the USA under special student Visa's to attend graduate school in the Fine Arts department. The problem I pondered is that several had degrees in engineering and none of them had aptitude for any types of art. Thinking back I speculate they were just Israeli spies. None of us are allowed to question the actions of Israel or the actions of our government with Israel. Is this the United States of Israel? What happened to the rule of Law? During the month of June 1967 they were huddled around a shortwave radio in the living room speaking in Hebrew and were animated about the ongoing war between Egypt and Israel. In English they told me that the "USA news was all wrong" about what was going on in the Middle East. Why were they in the USA? Certainly it was not for "Fine Art" schooling or pleasure. I recall that all of them thought they were superior to me and other Americans. Smugness and privilege was their calling card. Obnoxious people! I moved out and am sad about the contacts I made. The attack on USS Liberty (Operation Cyanide) wasn't the first time Israel had attacked US personnel. They did it previously in Operation Susannah 1953 when a group of agents called sayanim in Egypt dressed up as Arabs, carrying false and inflammatory propaganda, planted phosphorus bombs in bars, clubs and cinemas used by US personnel with the aim of murdering as many as possible and blaming it on the Egyptians. In other words exactly the same mission obective as Operation Cyanide a decade later. One of them called Phillip Nathanson had his device detonate prematurely and he was burned to a crisp. From his remains he was traced to a hotel and nine of the others were arrested and subected to a humiliating show trial. Israel denied any involvement of course but the lie was untenable. Eventually the Defence Minister Pinchas Lavon was selected as a fall guy and had to pretend that he authorised the operation without the knowledge of the Israeli cabinet. Thank you Al Jazeera seeing this documentary made me understand more of what really happened, I remember my grandfather telling me the story of what they saw and found on that ship with tears coming out of his eyes every time he spoke about it. My late grandfather LELI SCICLUNA (aka Manetta at the Dry Docks) from Senglea, Malta was a dockyard worker at the Malta Dry Docks and worked on refitting the ship and make it seaworthy again. Actually a documentary about the USS Liberty attack was aired on public TV a decade or so ago in the US, I do not remember the station or network though I just remember watching it with complete disgust that something like this was allowed to happen and then so readily covered up. The facts of that documentary were very similar to those of this video, only this video has the tape recordings of the Israeli pilots discussing with their air controllers who's vessel it was they were about to attack. So YES this was in fact aired on US TV by a US Network a decade or so ago I recall it very clearly. It did not however spark any new investigations or anything into the event, unfortunately.... I do not know why, but can guess. :-\
