Forrest Fenn: Unedited New Mexico True Stories Interview

  • This interview was conducted for the New Mexico Tourism Department's "New Mexico True Stories" series of videos. The ad made with this footage was released in 2015 and can be seen here: • The Searchers-New Mexi...
    I was interested to see the raw footage from this interview because of Forrest's comment about "saying too much." (You can see that here in its original context at 43:08.)
    As the Tourism Department is a state agency, I wondered if it would be subject to a public-records law. It turns out there is one: the Inspection of Public Records Act of New Mexico. This law says that not only are state agencies subject to the law, but materials made by others doing work for a state agency are subject to it as well.
    My first attempt to get a copy of this interview was denied in November of 2018 by the governor's press secretary (of all people). She said the department did not have the footage.
    I tried again with the director of the video. He did have a copy, and the Tourism Department facilitated my request in February of 2019 by sending me a DVD of the raw footage of the interview from a single camera. The DVD did not have any of the other footage used in the commercial.
    As per the Act, this video is a public document, and I am sharing it in its full, raw form. There are no edits by me. I do not know why the crew seem to misnumber the takes in the video.
    When I received it, I emailed Forrest to ask if I could post it online, and he initially said yes but changed his mind when I mentioned he said in the video that "the treasure is not buried where you're going to find it." Now that I've found the treasure, the buried vs. non-buried point is moot.
    This is my favorite interview of Forrest. He's in rare form here, and I always chuckle at 29:25. I'm sharing this not because I think there are any hints or important slip-ups here (I don't), but because I think other searchers who miss Forrest will enjoy seeing it.
    For the credits for this video, please see the description here: • The Searchers-New Mexi...

    Mr. Fenn is correct. If you grew up in the "countryside", outside of modern day suburbia, then you knew a life that was completely different, a life primarily in tune with nature/animals.
    I am now 65 years old, and I was one of the highschool kids who had to take "the bus" to school. We were definitely NOT the cool kids. No football games for us, cus we had to "take the bus"...back home to the countryside.
    As a kid, it was pretty magical for me, all I ever did was hang out, "outside", exploring the woods, skating in MY own pond in the "woods", eating my peanut butter sandwiches under a tree somewhere....Walking our PATH to the barn... we had two of them...
    Going through the forest every day, tapping the maple trees, naming the baby calfs that had been born...
    I can see that this is a positive "secondary" effect of this treasure hunt. On the other hand though, this treasure hunt has "ended", Mr. Fenn has passed away, and there seems to be a lot of questions as to the authenticity of it all....
    I find this to be unfortunate, and disappointing. Surely the searchers would like to know how the poem was deciphered? Why not release the location?

    • @petpilgrimgoose
      @petpilgrimgoose Před 3 lety +1

      L. Ryan, I completely agree with you. I think the 'bad apples' out there and those with sour grape attitudes because they weren't the ones to find the treasure are the minority. For all those of you who did seek it and didn't find it, but perhaps found something more important in the searching as well as making happy memories that would be treasured for a lifetime, I think Jack should lay it out and tell the story of where and how the treasure was found. I think it would mean so much to those who tried to hear the story. I also don't think Mr. Fenn would object to that. He seemed to want to share the special places in this country with all.

    I went to look in August, 2017 in the Rocky Mountains, in Wyoming. A painting in the Smithsonian by an artist named Grafton Brown led me to believe I might know where the treasure might be, since Forrest loved art and he mentioned the Smithsonian in one of his interviews. This painting was of the upper falls in Yellowstone. I went looking but the Trail (Uncle Tom's Trail) I wanted to go along was closed. My foot was also hurt at the time and I could barely walk so going down a closed trail with wild animals was not in my best interest. I always wondered if I was in the ballpark of the treasure.

    It’s not buried where you’re going to find it. This phrase bugs me, it almost sounds like you are going to find it before you recover it from the spot in which it’s buried. Then I think about the photo of it where it was found and I’d argue that it was somewhat buried. This makes me think that when you at the blaze you will see something that identifies the spot found in the marvel gaze. He also mentions sage brush which I find interesting. He didn’t go way up a mountain. It was recovered in early June and the area wasn’t covered with snow so that seems to add up. I’m dying to know what that last thing was that took you to the exact spot.

The interviewer tried many times to bait him and each time Forrest would dodge and not give him the satisfaction of a straight answer. He was not going to let the interviewer get the best of him! I think it would have been a thrill to meet Forrest - his stories are fascinating. I love how he laughs at his own stories - he was the lead character in his own play, that's for sure! He will be missed. Congrats to you & best wishes.

Them after you picked up the peices. Revealing the solve will make sense as your older, but I doubt ppl will ruin the site, I think that is not the point, but getting ppl out in the woods is more Forrest Fenn ish than keeping it hidden, but only my two cents. Why would you say didn't know him but did interview with Jack prior to your book release TTOTC. But yet you want everyone to believe Jack a medical student you didn't know that stumbled and found your chest. This is so fraudulent and sad all the people who died. The truth should come out the Fenn family should make this right Jack was not the true finder. Sad this treasure has made people insane. Nice video. You’ve mentioned before you got a couple clues from some of his interviews. I can only assume that one of them has to be in this video because why post it otherwise.
    I likely spent 50 hours of my life on the treasure hunt. My best guess solve wasn’t in Wyoming so I’m pretty grateful for that.
    I’d love to sit and talk with you for an hour or so.

Stuff like what did riches new and old mean? Was this a spot that Forrest found some older treasure? Especially home of Brown and what was his blaze. Jack did you use amobarbital on Forrest while interviewing him some how you found a short cut because you don't seem to know how you found the treasure where you say you did 6 feet away and didn't know where to look you must of just happened upon it because you don't know what Forrest has really done to give one confidence.

    • @tomszabo7350
      @tomszabo7350 Před 3 lety +1

      The interview is by a film crew for the New Mexico Tourism Board, not Jack. He used an FOIA request to obtain the raw footage because in the final cut Forrest stated that he said something that he shouldn't have said. Since there wasn't anything in the edited version like that, Jack thought maybe the unedited video might have something. There were only two spots that could be potential slip-ups: the first is when Forrest says that he hid the treasure before he knew what he was going to do with it. I'm having a hard time understanding this, he definitely didn't mean to say it that way. I think he meant that he hid the chest some time before he had actually made a final decision to release TTOTC. Perhaps this points to 2009 vs 2010. The second mistake or slip-up could be more serious. He states that he hid the chest in a dear place but he didn't want to talk more about it because that would give a "timeline" which would be a hint. Logical deduction is the dear place is one that he was associated with during a specific period in his life vs. a place where he lived (or alternatively wasn't known to spend any time). I believe this is a slip-up that allowed Jack to confidently eliminate both New Mexico (Forrest lived there since 1970 so a specific timeline wouldn't probably constitute a clue) and Colorado (because there is no publicly-available tjmeline of him being in that state). Not everything has to be positive confirmation, a hint that eliminates half the states was pretty huge before we all knew the chest was in Wyoming.

    • @LRyan-li9wr
      @LRyan-li9wr Před 3 lety +1

      I don't know what "amobarbital is"...but I do agree that it doesn't appear that the clues were followed precisely, and that the steps taken to the chest weren't made in confidence... Isn't that what Forrest said? Follow the clues in the poem precisely, and you will move with confidence?
