Shep at night in New York on WOR...What a listening experience growing up!!!
I spent much of my childhood listening to Shep. Absolute genius in his work!
Dodger fan here. If we played the Astros in a full Dodger stadium this year, the boos would be epic! Loved this one!

Its true! I try to emulate his abilities (I don't even come close... but I try) and my radio station barely gives me 30 minutes a week of time to try it.
White Sox were in the world series 1919 year before Gene was born so his father tasted some success though it was the black sox. Gene said they were never better than third - not true
You need to research their victory. There was a reason they were called the 1919 Black Sox. I'm guessing you haven't heard about it.
They won the Series in 1906 and 1917.
As I'm certain Shep knew, the Russians classified amateur radio DXing as "radio sport". So it is right up there with chess, sports fans!
I wonder where he got the idea for the strange music introduction for his programs.
Bahn Frei was a 19th century Strauss polka of some kind. I'm sure he adored it's over-the-top victorianness
He once said that the song represented the race in which we we we are involved. The Rat Race and The Human Race was what he was talking about.
My dad listened every night and I could hear the music in my room. Dad taught me to appreciate Shepherd and I did the same with my kids. My daughter and granddaughters were in a local theatre production of the musical "A Christmas Story" and my grandgirls are now Shepherd fans.
@@katecampbell5466 About to do the same with my first daughter, looking forward to the nights of putting her to sleep to storytelling that is- the radio. Children are hope and so is the storytelling of Jean. Memories passed down of memories passed down.
He told a caller on a Larry King interview he once had a beer sponsor Bay Horse beer (or something like that) and they would start his program with this song and animation of him chasing horses. Look for the Shep, King interview.
