The Jean Shepherd Show
United States
Registrace 29. 10. 2006
This channel features restored Jean Shepherd radio shows and interviews from the 1950s to the 1990s. Most of the original content can be found on public internet sources like the Wayback Machine (www.archive.org) and FlickLives.com. It is worth noting that most of these recordings have imperfections in the form of background noise and static. This is understandable due to the use of home recording technology, poor reception of AM broadcasts, and the storage of tapes under adverse conditions. We have done our best to restore these recordings to a listenable state using newly available AI audio software, and we hope to continue progress as time permits.

It's impossible to create material Shep created 5 nights a week. Limelight Saturday nights. Movies. Books. Best times listening to this cat.
CAmping on Thanksgiving in the rain was great fun.
17:38 "....all in pursuit of that healing balm: 'The Thundering Report'..." I love how Shep used the homonym 'balm' within his story pertaining to 'bombs'😛
15:53 - "...settled down comfortably into my soft eiderdown bed of rememberences of things Past."
I use these to help me fall asleep, and today, July 4, 2024 (Edit: actually 1 AM July 5😛) I am still awake after 11 minutes, and I have to say this is the first time in a long time that I had not fallen asleep before now, and I am amazed and thankful that even after hearing this story a half dozen times over the years, this feels like the first time I ever heard it, and I am again astounded at how rich Shep's prose is😂😉👍
My father played Shepherd stories on tape during family roadtrips in the 1980s. Great times. I still make a point to listen/read the Ludlow story each 4th of July.
Every Tuesday night, 2:15 AM on WBAI (99.5 FM), you can listen to Jean Shepherd.
33:04 😂
20:19 😅
Jean was 'the' great American storyteller of the post WWII era. After Will Rogers. I know it's boring hearing us natives go on if you're not from the place, but us folks who are from Hammond listen to Jean and are reminded of our unique home, frozen in time for the era. For all time. Him and Dad were from the same generation. I know where Flick's was. And Hessville, Harding School and the former (now gone) Hammond High School (Wildcats). We probably get the same buzz from Jean that Okies dealt with listening to Rogers. Some of Rogers fellow Okies hated him and his 'liberal' views. Even he had political enemies. Jean had some in The Region. People who let him have it for, what they saw, his making it look like place of horrors. To me, his voice and writings make me proud to be from the same place as Jean. Heck, we were both even in the Army Signal Corps. I listened to Jean (for the only time) his last 2 years at WOR. We had moved to Connecticut in 1975, where you could pick up that station. This story was my dad's favorite, as it has deep roots in truth. Built by the many WWII vets who slaved away in the mills and refineries. The bombs were featured in each little neighborhood, so you could make the hike and catch some other explosions. It was great because the stores would break the rules and open. And, the Sox still stink and suck, which is not easy to do.
My mom graduated with Shep. We would look people up in their Yearbook when he told stories of his fellow kids. Back in the 70's I had him autograph mom's copy, which he wouldn't do till I informed his she was his schoolmate. My uncle Ed and Jack drink at Fkickinger's bar. I called up the Hammond Library and High School to ask if they wanted Mom's 3 yearbooks(including the Shep signed one ) neither could be bothered to respond. I got a standing offer of $500 from a guy in the Lions Club. But I'd still rather give it to Hammond.
One of America's greatest storytellers, without a doubt. Thanks, Shep.
“The Great American Fourth of July and Other Disasters” is a must to watch this time of year.
Shep talking about CEOs having bad tempers, was true of my Dad. Uber-successful CEO and business owner; hair-trigger temper. None of us actually liked him. But I guess that’s how you get people to do your bidding.
Shep has to explain what “graffiti” means, there in 1963. Boy, I wish I’d seen America back then. I was a year old then, but I don’t remember much…
60th and Madison. My orthodontist was there, right on the s/w corner.
I try to figure out what year a broadcast is, sometimes it's easy because he menrions a current event. But about a third of the way i guessed 1971. I go by the sound of his voice. When i saw it was 1965 it made sense. His content matured over time.
Would love to hear more Shep pre 1960 or rare episodes feom 60-63. Some day
Ripping off his own material. He was the Mail boy at the steel mill last week......
43:24 😅
You were the best storyteller of your day. Thanks, Shep. Rest in peace.❤
EXCELSIOR ☝️
I miss good, live radio. Yes, I AM that old........
Me too. Edit add: as a kid i couldn't stand his jewsharp and kazoo playing. Now, i can't get enough of it.
It’s strangely reassuring to hear a broadcast from 53 years ago portraying the fate of used car salesmen still holds true today…
Ah, the vacant lot. Ah, the Kinney Parking System. On 6th Avenue, between Washington Place and Waverly Place on the east side of Sixth Avenue, a.k.a, Avenue of the Americas.
31:47 true as ever
25:07 facts
My friend lives in the apartments on what was Palisades Amusement park. The park would be closed permanently about a month after this aired. I remember the hysteria on the walking catfish
5:34 😂
I listen to Jean’s archived shows on line, they are gold. Thanks for posting and, post more!
"$50 extra for Knick tix" what a magical time it must've been?
This is one GREAT and wild episode! Sort of what you might get if Salvador Dali hypnotized Bullwinkle! Complete with a short but keen insight into King Kong! Wah-hoo!!!
Can't quite get that Dali/Bullwinkle reference out of my head! 🤣
34:07 😂
HEY EVERYBODY WATCHING --- Be sure to give this video a "thumbs up!" and "Subscribe" if you haven't already. It encourages the person posting to continue, and it puts the show further up in the CZcams order, so more people find these great shows. Just sayin'. (And thank you again, person-who-is-taking-the-time-to-do-this!)
Thanks for your kind comments, CW! 😁
Awesome!
My new favorite.
The one and only Shep.
Having grown up on the plains of western Kansas/eastern Colorado I relate very well to what he's saying. It is just as he describes it.
Shepherd would not be surprised by the current plight of the 2024 White Sox.
Thanks!
Thx!
21 minutes in -- Jean"s talking about Click Bait.
Back then, it may have been $3500 for an elephant, but it was FOB Africa. You had to provide your own transport.😅
Sometimes his "smarter than you" personality is a real turn off.....
2:54 - Shep knew one of the models, so Shep knew what "only her hairdresser knew for sure" 😂😂😂
18:42 -Shep reads news report of a woman's daughter's undergarments being stolen at a YMCA. Shep questions: "What is happening at the YMCA?" With Shep's heavy accent on the "M."
3:49 - Ha ha. I don't think I *_want_* to know any more🫣😶😂
Is "A Christmas Story" based on his stories?
Yes!
He also narrates
Really great episode. Thanks

4:17 - This is an epic moment (at least to me). Apparently, some lookee-loos are walking in the studio, interrupting Shep's monolog, and Shep curtly engages them without missing a beat. This has happened other times with other "talent" on air in the station, and Shep works the interruption into his Schtick by engaging the other talent in almost sarcastic "small talk" and "inviting" them to come back any time😂
As a lifelong airplane nut ( Even though i'm Much more into World War 2 than World War 1 aircraft), I found this program a real treat! And I continue to be Amazed how both broad and deep Shep's Interests were. in a number of different subjects.
