Mercedes w208 clk320 Polyurethane lower control arm bushing installation

- How to remove and replace the front lower control arm bushing ,and replace it with an aftermarket solid polyurethane bushing...this can be dangerous since the coil spring remains on the car and could cause serious injury if caution is not used. The stock bushings are fluid filled and care should be taken (eye protection) in case of squirting fluid under pressure. follow me on twitter / fupabox

Thanks a million for your informative videos, Doing this job right now on my W208, that center part of that bushing was horrible to get out, drilling several holes did the trick! The bushings got quite warm and had a nice burning rubber and oil smell though lol That was the easy one, got the whole kit and I found the front bushing is even worse than to get out, it's not fluid filled so it can be burned out.
Just wanted to say that FCP Euro was quite the suggestion. I found that for $26 you get both pieces , what a bargain

I really enjoy your vids, thanks for posting them! Does the poly bushing firm up the suspension or make it harsh? Would it be too aggressive to use a reciprocating (sawzall) saw to cut out the old bushing?
Hey wondering where you purchased these poly bushings? Also I assume they improve handling and provide increased longevity compared to oem. Can you speak to this at all? Thanks
The only way I can describe the poly bushing feeling..is that it feels like when you over-inflate your tires by a couple pounds..cornering and steering is much more direct with less body motion..only slightly stiffer ride..it is noticeable,but only on the bigger potholes etc. I did one side with a sawzall and the other with the hacksaw..sawzall is no problem if you are careful,and much much faster..I showed a hacksaw in the video because is would be easier for most viewers to use
any difference in drive when using poly vs regular on a W202? what good site and brand to get them? and new bolt set? thanks
Where did you buy the bushings? And what company makes them. Ive been searching all over and cant find them
Do the stock bolts fit back in the metal inner sleeve of the new poly bushings. Saw a video which showed that the new sleeve was too small at the ends for the original bolt to fit in fully?
+Shelley Bobman I have never seen the stock bolts not fit in... I have done maybe 8 or 10 lower control arms, but it is possible some of the replacements are not the correct size..
Do you know if the front bushing is the same part even though they are two piece bushings? I figure at this price I can do all 4 bushings if I'm going to be in there.

My car is a 2001 clk55amg. Still the same as clk320?
I'm about to change the whole control arm on my W208 only cost about $120 seems a lot easier than struggling with the bushings.
you are correct there.. I was going for longevity , since the bushings were wearing sooo fast, but replacing the entire arm is easier by far
Makes sense, I did the job today no problem thanks to yours and others videos, even if I was just changing the bushings though I think I would remove the control arm and do it on the bench.
Do you know if the procedure is the same for w209 models?
+John Smith nope completely different.. The w209 has 2 individual lower control arms with the ball joints built in, and a strut front spring/shock assembly.. same as the w203

they were still going strong around 350k km. that's the last time I saw the new owner
damn it !! i know i forgot something !! the Polyurethane part !! i installed the normal one`s ..... well i hope they last at least 3 years well if they serve me for 2 years i wouldn't be sorry but the roads here are a nightmare ! next time i'm sure going to hit it up with a fast question before i do anything ^^ the good part is i changed the front and the rear one`s the bad thing is i still have clanking sounds !! i changed the sway bar ball joints too ! those were like 50% of the price :S im thinking its the strut mounts i mean there is no other explanation ... the car now feels spongy :< it use to be clunky and metal to metal action i miss that ;P but at least when i hit the brakes or go around the bend the car follows me too ^^ im sure i need new shock absorbers too mine are kinda soft now ... im not going to buy a new car i'm going to fix this one !! 100-200$ a month on fixing this is better than being in debt and buying a new car !!
The stock ones should last quite a while..if the roads are really bad, the poly bushings would be pretty harsh. strut mounts are definitely a possibility..or as you say the shocks themselves can clunk when they are tired
those are pushed to next month list !! well few months from now :P i have to fix the rear differential and drive shaft first :< after those im going back to this !! THEN going back to rear strut mounts ...... and only then i can fix the cars looks maybe a good car stereo or something .... god this car is a money pit and im poor :P
I've had a pretty annoying hi pitch squeak coming from my front two wheels on my CLK for a while.. everytime I slightly turn my wheel around corners or even straightaways it'll squeak.. It's not the brakes, and its not the back plating to the rotors.. It's really driving me crazy, please help me diagnose the problem
+Matthew Nota I would think it is something in the suspension...I would get a spray can of silicon lubricant, and spray one moveable suspension part ..then go for a drive..then try another until the noise stops.. then you will have found the squeek
+fupabox I purchased a lubricant spray and sprayed down pretty much all contact points on the suspension on both sides last weekend.. The noise was gone temporarily but now it's back and even worse.. I haven't tried systematically going through part by part, I'll give that a try..
Matthew Nota find something non petroleum based.. silicone is good..lanolin is best (fluid film works well)
+fupabox ok I'll try to that.. I had used 'white lithium grease' which is petroleum based..
why would would my wheel hit my knuckle 2000 mercedes clk 320 tie rod end upper a arms wheel bearing Firestone alignment w208 chasis
If you have everything stock, including the wheels ,even with worn parts the knuckle shouldn't hit the wheel. Are the wheel rims stock ?
@@fupabox they came off a ml 320 I have inch and a half spacers on the front and 1/4 inch in the rear
my clk 430 had no steering wheel vibration before I hit a bad pothole what could it be?
The best outcome would be an unbalanced wheel from the impact ..It could (in order getting from cheaper to more expensive) wheel balance, wheel alignment, broken bead in tire from impact, bent rim

where did you order this part from?
Metalunique FCP had them on sale for 1/2 price a while back...the w202 and w208 use the same bushing, but it usually isn't listed as a w208 part
It might be more expensive, but wouldn't it be much easier replacing the whole control arm?
$600 for 2 control arms that will need to be replaced again after 120k (2 years for me) or $100 for 2 bushings that will last the life of the car with maybe 1/2 hour more work
***** The original ones have lasted since the car was new I reckon (1997), and have just started to make a clunking noise. My W210 has done 240.000km :)
Dozinox 240k km is really good on original lower bushings... I have seen them gone at under 120k km ...I would go for the entire lower arm with bushing if I knew I could get 240k
Do those poly bushings fit on both sides of ONE arm?
Dozinox no...only the rear lower bushing seems to wear out.....so the 2 poly bushes did both sides
