    Why when we make the abbreviation to "The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation" we say NATO

      'NATO' is an acronym and forms a word similar to a name. That's why 'the' is dropped. Other examples are OPEC and UNESCO.

    1) NATO without 'the', but the EU
    Is it because of the word 'Union'?

    Don't we need to write dentist'S?

      The word 'current' makes the noun 'inflation' into a specific one: the inflation we are experiencing now.

    I have some questions
    1- Why you add ( The ) to acronym ( EU )?

    3- When is not necessary to put any of these articles (THE, A , AN )?

      @AngloLinkEnglish  Před 6 lety

      1. Acronyms usually need 'the'.
      2. No, you cannot conclude that. It depends on the context.
      3. Plural nouns referring to a general group: Cats like to sleep.

    • @AngloLinkEnglish
      @AngloLinkEnglish  Před 7 lety

      I'm glad you like my lessons, Hien.
      'primary' and 'secondary' are not considered 'ordinal' numbers'. So, it's not those words that determine if we use 'the' or not in this context. It's the word 'school'. 'school' falls in the category of 'home', 'work', 'church' etc.

    1.Is there a rule to determine whether an organisation needs the article or not?Or you need to remember all of them?

      @AngloLinkEnglish  Před 8 lety

      +Vasily Sarantsev
      Hello Vasily,
      I'm glad you've liked the lesson.
      1. I haven't been able to deduce a rule so far. Like any name, it is a bit arbitrary.
      2. You need 'the' here because we're talking about a specific inflation i.e. the current one. If we were talking about inflation in general, we wouldn't need it, e.g. 'High inflation can severely hurt businesses.'

    Hi Minoo! You are doing a great job! I follow your lessons. Is two years now. Could you upload a video-lesson about the use of the verb "to do" and one about the imperative form? I can't find those in the play-list... Thank you! Bye. Francesco

      I've made a note of your suggestions. I can't tell you how quickly I'll get round to doing these, as I have a few on my to-do list that I feel I should do first such as 'relative pronouns' and 'connectives'.

    Thank you for another great and helpful lesson🤗 I've have few questions to ask.. I got these from the book , Wren & Marten...
    1: page no#35: we can say "The banyan is a kind of fig tree." But can't say "a kind of a fig tree" why?
    2: "The" is used before a common noun to give it the meaning of abstract noun.. will you please explain it a bit more?

      I've made a note of your request. In the meantime, a quick note:
      As determiners:
      another + singular noun: another book
      (the) other + plural nouns & uncountable nouns: (the) other books, (the) other information
      As pronouns:
      the other = the other one
      (the) others = (the) other ones

    You can use "the" in front of jail... church... prison if you speak about a place that you went but not for the reasons that place is operating.. i. e I went to the prison to bring him cookies... I saw the church where he sang as a little boy.

      It's the distinction between 'taking part', as it were, in some kind of event there; and describing the building or person's location.
      "He's at church" suggests he is actually taking part in a service.
      "He's in the church" is simply describing his location.
      It's rather obvious English is very much a hybrid language isn't it?
