English Grammar: When NOT to use an article - 9 rules

- čas přidán 6. 07. 2024
- Articles (”a”, “an”, “the”, or no article) can be very confusing to English learners. The most confusing thing is when NOT to include an article. In this English grammar class, I will show you 9 situations in which an article should be left out. For example, why is (Ø) French food delicious, while THE French love delicious food? Test your understanding with the quiz: www.engvid.com/when-not-to-us...

Important note: languages DO get "the" if they have the word "language" after it. For example "Russian" vs "the russian language" or "English" vs "the english language"
I see that there is no capital letter use as well when talking about the kind of language(?).
@@Grace-cx9zu I have no idea. Honestly I think it might still be capitalized
@@Grace-cx9zu languages should be capitalized
Thanks for noting it
If nationality is the same as the language, it does have “the” before nationality (e.g. The Russian speak Russian and The Thai speak Thai.
Compare w/o “the” before nationality; Australians speak English as British as well. ** no article before language
Thanks Mr. Adam a lot. Your teaching helps erase my confusion about articles. Your video is very useful!
Finally I have found a good teacher who can finally help me to understand how I can talk and write in English without or with the minimum of mistakes. Ohhh my goodness.... finally. Before this I started to think that I can't find my first IT job not because of not having the needed hard skills but because of my awful English. Thanks, you gave me a hope. Thanks again!
I feel grateful to have an awesome
teacher like Adam. (From Japan)
This helps me a lot. Using articles is the most challenging for me.

Hey Adam, greetings from Ukraine, you're great teacher, I love to watch your vids!
The Ukraine :)
@@giedregaizauskiene4674 no, we use Zero Article with countries if it's no exception)
@@kononchukolha4650 True, there's no such thing as "The Ukraine"
@@kononchukolha4650 and the Ukraine is an exception to the rule. But these days nobody cares at all. Read old grammar books.
It's actually "you're a great teacher"
Thank you for this video, especially I admire the style of summarising each part, great teaching skills
Adam, thanks a lot! This is a very helpful video. Your explanation complemented the topics from the textbooks.
Adam is the best teacher I ever heard. It´is incredible how I can easily understand every single word he say. Sometimes I think I can speack english well enough, but when I watch a movie or interview I relize I´m wrong. I wonder why so is much differente. :-(
Thank you, your video helped to refresh understanding of some exceptions!
Structured, informative, and simple. Thank you, Adam. Appreciate your work.

@Anh Nguyễn Ngọc Duy because you have mentioned in your sentense that the test was yesterday, so it will be either " I can't believe I failed the test"( provided that you have mentioned which test you are talking about in earlier sentence) or "I can't believe I failed yesterday's test."
thanks for the wrap-up
Thank you very much, sir; I needed this lecture.
Always Like your videos Adam, as they are not only from a native speaker, but full of energy and rules, bedside these your speech is smooth and clear.
Always appreciate your video lessons.
7:17 “… so lake Baikal in Russia or THE Hudson Bay in Canada no article” - lol. These rules are really confusing. By the way this is the best explanation of these rules. Thanks.
It's one of my serious problem to memorize the articles. Too plenty rules and exceptions.
Anyway, I so appreciate it, Adam for Your job.
God bless U
can you do a video about extensive( intransitive, monotransitive, ditransitive, complextransitive) and intensive verbs ? please !

Thank you so much Adam!
Thanks for the video!
Actually, rules 8 and 9 look much simpler than the other ones, because the other rules have so much exceptions that it's just easier to remember them case by case than trying to memorize strange exceptions with exceptions for exceptions inside exceptions =)
Thank you for always teaching clearly every word written is explained precisely
Amazing teacher,very clarify explanation.Thanks a lot!!!

I found the difference between lake/bay and sea/river. Lakes and bays are fully visible and we can recognize them. However, we can see only the part of seas and rivers so I guess we need to use "the" to tell the whole image of them to the listener.
Thank you mr adam. god bless you.
Thanks mr.adam...!Being helpful
Hello Adam, thank you for this beautiful lesson. I did all the questions good without the last. I thought to put "no article" but I changed my mind because I thought that is a specific alcohol "that is not served in a sealed bottle". So for this reason I don't put "no article " because I understand this situation like something specific and not in general. May you help me to understand better?
Thanks very much for the lesson
Thanks for your job!

@@hotcuppa42 In my personal perspective, I chose this video out of many others. Because it looked simple and straight forward. It contained a diagram of sorts. I learn best when I have context played out in front of me in a hands on approach, especially with independent research. I hope this helps you and thanks.
