15 PHRASAL VERBS with meanings you can’t guess!
Want to *beef up* your English skills? Native English speakers love to talk about food and to use food images to express ideas. This includes using phrasal verbs where the verb is from food, eating, or cooking. But the meaning of the phrasal verb in total often doesn’t have to do with food at all. In this lesson, we’ll look at some of these phrasal verbs, including "duck down", "clam up", "beef up", "chew out", "swallow up", "chicken out", "chew over", "veg out", "boil over", "cut up", "milk for", "fish through", "pan out", and more! Watch the video, then take the quiz: www.engvid.com/15-food-phrasal-verbs-with-meanings-you-cant-guess/

Thank you so much for your informative video. The quizzes provided for each video are also very helpful. I'm grateful for your dedication to helping us learners. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to beef up By learning English from news videos, I can beef up and enhance my knowledge of what's happening in the world. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to chicken out If you'd like to beef up your speaking skills, you shouldn't chicken out or hesitate when you have an opportunity to talk to native speakers. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to fish through I lost my adapter for connecting earbuds to an iPhone the other day. I fished through all the drawers, hoping to find the adapter. I left no stone unturned in my search for that earphone jack adapter, but in vain. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to duck down I saw a big wasp in front of me, so I ducked down hastily. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to duck out He had to duck out of his own birthday party for an hour to stream live on TikTok. He was participating in a TikTok voting event and had to go live on TikTok every day during that time period. Much to his delight, his efforts paid off, and he achieved a triple crown in the voting event. His fans were very happy that his dedication finally came to fruition. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to clam up The suspect clammed up and didn't come clean about the crime. The actress clams up and is tight-lipped about her new boyfriend because her talent agency tells her to remain silent about her private relationship for the time being. When he collaborated with a well-known comedy duo on his CZcams channel, there was a lot of tension in the air during the shoot. It looked like the comedy duo was on edge and in a bad mood, and he seemed to be walking on eggshells around them. Even after all these years, he still clams up and keeps his lips sealed about why the atmosphere on the shoot was so tense and stifling back then. Years have passed, yet the reason remains shrouded in mystery to this day. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to veg out I don't want to waste time dilly-dallying and just vegging out in front of the TV all day.

●to milk someone for I'm skeptical that some nefarious doctors just try to milk patients for their money, taking advantage of/capitalizing on their weak points. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to chew over I wanted to chew it over and give much thought to it before making up my mind, so I asked him to let me sleep on it. In the end it boils down to cost. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to chew someone out (for ~ing) The mother chewed her kids out for always quarreling/bickering/squabbling. The mother chewed her kids out for their incessant quarreling. Usually, he doesn't reprimand or tell off his staff members, but when some of them kept being late every day, he finally chewed them out and gave them a piece of his mind. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to boil over The actor had been enduring gossipy articles about his private life. He was at the end of his tether. His nerves were stretched to breaking point, and his anger finally boiled over. It was an egregious article that became the straw that broke the camel's back. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to boil down to CZcamsrs vs comedians is a hot-button issue right now. Opinions are divided on whether CZcamsrs are more entertaining than comedians. In my view, it boils down to personal preference. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ●to pan out I hope both his hotel business and his new project with a housing maker pan out.
