  • This short presentation gives a brief overview of a study of Guanfacine currently enrolling participants ages 6-25 at NYU Langone Health.
Guanfacine Extended Release (GXR), is an FDA approved drug used to treat children and adolescents with hypertension and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).This will be the first study to evaluate the drug in patients with Prader Willi Syndrome.
GXR is thought to respond to parts of the brain that lead to strengthening working memory, reducing distraction, improving attention and impulse control. GXR is generally considered safe for children as long as it is used according to the dosing instructions of a qualified medical professional.
NYU Winthrop Hospital Clinical Trials Center is seeking volunteers between the ages of 6 and 35 years old diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) to participate in a clinical research study to see whether or not the study drug works to reduce the aggressive and self-injurious (such as skin picking) behaviors seen in PWS.
This study has been funded by the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research.

Combining Intuniv with Adderall has been a total game changer for me

How do you take them? Separately, together, in am or pm, etc?
I stopped adderall because of the bad side effects I had when I was on it, but now I just started to take guanfacine, I haven’t noticed much of difference. Do you take gunfacine every day or as needed?

As an adult, I take 3mg of Guanfacine. It's been over a month since I've started, it gives me a groggy feeling most mornings after I wake. My temper since I started has been rapidly getting worse, I hate how I've been over reacting over tiny things. My dr says this is normal because people with adhd typically withhold their feelings and blah blah. But I hate this piece of crap feeling I get, i apologize once I've finally cooled off because i know i have over reacted. I realize it while its happening but I'm so pissed in the moment I could give af about anything but remaining pissed. I just cant help it and I've been trying to cope.. I almost want to stop taking it entirely but I have noticed it helping slightly with my spiratic thinking and anxiety. But idk if this is the trade off I want. Definitely getting harder to control my aggressive impulses.

Have you tried Buspirone 15mg + melatonine 3mg instead?

@@Burevestnik9M730 I have not. I'll definitely ask about it next appointment but I think I'm fine. Those symptoms have subsided quite a bit after a month or so.

@@thatfunnyguybrandon8765 have you been stable since then? I think maybe the reaction you reported could have been an indicator of a hidden "bipolarity" of sorts.

@@marc2377 really? That's a bit comforting to know at least because there has been multiple times where I act out then crazy regret and a whole 180 emotionally. I've been off the meds for a lil while due to stomach issues but the thought of being slightly bipolar has crossed my mind

my focus has not improved but i can say the impulsivity has been more manageable with this medication. i’ve been able to handle conflict better & take a step back & think before i speak so i can see how communication has improved but the only thing i disagree with is focus improvement. weight gain has been documented as well with 5% of users.

I take 0.5mg of the short acting guanfacine two times a day (AM and PM) and it has dropped my BP ~10 points
