Clonidine

  • Clonidine, once primarily marketed as Catapres, remains among the 100 most prescribed medicines in spite of being on the market for over 50 years. While approved for treating hypertension and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, doctors routinely employ clonidine for a wide assortment of off label purposes.
Clonidine may assist in withdrawal from opioids, alcohol and tobacco. Clonidine finds use in treating menopausal or treatment induced hot flashes, the flushing of rosacea, PTSD and some anxiety related disorders. Interest in clonidine relates to its supposed ability to reduce neuropathic pain from nerve damage related to diabetes and shingles.
Side effects related to clonidine tend to be relatively mild and diminish with continued use. Some may be especially troublesome: dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue and headache. More problematic are vision disturbances, restlessness and erectile dysfunction. When used as a patch applied to the skin, irritation and blisters may develop.
Clonidine may aggravate the central nervous system depressive effects of alcohol, barbiturates and sedatives. Tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline impair the blood pressure lowering effect of clonidine. Combining clonidine with atypical antipsychotics such as Abilify or Zyprexa often result in dizziness and fatigue.

@Joseph Knecht yes sir. I would take it on and off. Also when I would run out of my losartan potassium and just take. The clonodine. Which was my mistake. My blood pressure was 238/187. It’s weird that you don’t feel abnormal even when I had the stroke. It was really a brain swelling close to my brain stem. Applying pressure and that was why i couldn’t walk. I heard someone say that we store dopamine in a place and it release the dopamine in concentrate to your brain which deprives your brain from oxygen then you have brain hemorrhage. Which is what happened to me. Plus high cholesterol = a “perfect storm” that’s the explanation they gave me. They never told me about the clonodine or explained what it can do. I researched it myself. They just instantly took me off of it. But never take it as needed or abruptly stop taking it. It used to be called catapress and gave many people strokes in the 70s and 80s. So the changed the name to clonodine

I will be going on 0.3 patch soon. Clonidine is a life saver for me so far, it's my breakfast lunch and dinner. No joking. Yeah it has side effects, I have severe dry eyes, thinning hair, tired sometimes ECT.... but it does help my high blood pressure with my disease. It's not 100%, but works pretty good. I have spikes sometimes that goes to 210/110 and all over board. I don't have regular high blood pressure. It's from my disease I have., I have fibrosis mediastinitus, I think I spelled it wrong...

The disease causes scar tissue inside all around the heart, lungs ECT. Just started in heart. I had a mild heart attack in October 2021. It was a small artery, catheter but no stent. I get around walking, not on oxygen, can't run or walk fast or do physical work, but limited some days, have to lay down quite often, biggest thing is blood pressure. I have to keep trying to keep it down....clonidine is a life saver for me. If I did not have this out of control blood pressure, I would be 70 percent good. I could do alot more. I pretty much eat it like candy through the day and it somewhat controls it to a point for me to get around, certain days ECT. I live minute to minute hour to hour. Limited on eating, amount, foods, cause it effects digestive system also, I have to take things slow....even getting up in morning, Not knowing if it's going to spike......it really sucks, but I am thankful I am still walking and not on oxygen. Thanks so much for your concern......
