On Croatian side, high speed line is being built from Jurdani (Croatian border) to Rijeka - Zagreb - Hungarian border. Initially line will be limited to 160kmph , but when there's a demand speed can be upped to max 250kmph. Eventually we could see Trenitalia service to Zagreb via Rijeka.

The train runs exactly once a day and, in terms of timing, offers no constructive connection from the direction of South Tyrol or Austria. It would make more sense to offer at least 2 circuits and to delay the time slot with departure from Villa Opicina by 2 hours (i.e. departure at 10:00 a.m. at the earliest)...

It’s a start and the intention is to run more per day in the future. Also hopefully run to Trieste Centrale station, pending certification by the Italians for their core network. I imagine this will help open up connections!

I read a lot of weird stuff in here. So, what's the best way to travel from Trieste to Rijeka if you don't have a car? Train or bus? Are there enough routes through the day? Can somebody give some reliable information? Thanks in advance.

far best way is by bus..it drives every hour or two (from Trieste and from Rijeka) and it's cheap..train is useless if you go from Rijeka to Trieste. and also bus is stationed in the centre of Trieste and train is in Opicina,a village outside of Trieste.

The bus is more direct and therefore quicker. The cost of the bus is similar but sometimes more than the train, only €8 each way. In terms of comfort the train wins any day for me, as long as the times work, which they do for a day trip from Trieste/Opicina.

This train is set to be a big money loser. No normal person will take a 2 hour train ride from Rijeka to the middle of nowhere, when you can drive the same distance in 1h and get to Trieste in just a little more. The speed line between Opicina to Pivka is at around 70 km/h on average, Pivka to Croatian border 60-70, and the rest mainly 40-60 km/h. They should do do something about the line before introducing the service.

The intention is to run to Trieste Centrale, pending certification from the Italians for the Stadler FLIRT to run on their network. The journey time is reasonably competitive with the coach (1h40), with a far superior passenger experience onboard, although you need to factor in the journey to Opicina. We’ll see how it pans out.
