- Test Run of Rolls Royce Artouste APU Engine. This unit originally came out of an RAF VC-10. The turbine disc glows a bit under load even though the TGT is within limit. I think too much air may be bypassing the air-delivery butterfly valve on the combustion chamber. Nice little engine!!

One thing many American dudes and UK blokes can agree on: There’s nothing more (ironically) tranquil and life giving than turning a few wrenches and then proudly firing up whatever loud thing it is you were working on.
I think it is a "guy" thing
- and having a few bits left over?
Tim Carrington
Haha. I call it profit!
Boys never really grow up. Their toys just get bigger and more expensive. 😁

Very cool. Here in Detroit,we still like to run our big block and small block V8's on stands in our driveways.Even with open headers we don't wear hearing protection, but running them does help drown out the sound of the gunshots.
In Detroit you have to run it while you have it. You usually don't get to keep it very long
In Detroit where EMT and ambulance drivers get attacked,,,WHAT A SHITHOLE.
Q: Why should you never run over a black guy on a bike in Detroit? A: It's probably your bike.
@RJ Films in Detroit the police will never show up and if the guy who stole it got hurt on it he would Sue you and probably win!
@James Ray that seems a bit racist
Everyone needs one of those in their driveway as a countermeasure for their neighbors barking dogs!
defo
Or just use a Fox 40 whistle.
hahahahahaha !!!!!! you made me laugh !!!
Just use a fog horn them things are LOUD!!!
I've two yappy dogs not 3 metres from my head where I sleep. Don't like the skittish things.
Thank you for giving us all a glimpse of what we never see.
The coolest sound of any turbine engine of any age, era, or purpose is the hairdryer sounding starter spool up followed by the deep subwoofer moan of the turbine being fired.
You did not just describe a turbine as “Moaning” 😭 💀
i reckon they should have went the whole hog and connected another 2 bulbs
Thats one expensive and noisy way to light 6 globes!!
TheColinputer wtf is a globe I know those are what you put in your hard but I don't see any in the video
the engine puts out enough energy to power over 3'000 60W light bulbs..
Lukas Beer 180kw
And it was running weak enough to do it on bunker fuel apparently.
I would have thought Whittle would have moved to heavier oil as they learned more about the technology, presumably there is a time limit on the burn rate of the fuel used meaning they can only run on paraffin?
"Because we CAN"
I said, "THERE'S NOTHING QUITE LIKE A QUIET GENERATOR, IS THERE?"
" YES DEAR. TOAST ANOTHER CRUMPET WOULD YOU."
Monty Python: "ah,... Size nine"
“Quite! And that’s nothing like a quiet generator!”
The neighbors are going to love your new emergency generator.
Perfect, several hundred horse power and 150 decibels to run six bulbs! Oh, and a shitload of fun!
900 HP
Handy for charging your phone in the garden.
Going to Yellowstone for vacation. This would be nice for powering the camp lights :)
Ahh Yellowstone, the hoot of an owl, the yip of coyotes down by the stream, the scream of a gas turbine....
Probably a good way to keep the bears away, too.
And not a trace of flicker from the strobes
OvalWingNut That's a great idea, but bring a spare engine just incase.
Just imagine the serenity...
you know it'll be a good video when it starts out with kerosene being dumped into another container with batteries, cables, jet engines, fire extinguishers and other assorted fun stuff strewn about.
He he,yeh safety officer is watching, facial twitch out of control.
haha
nothing makes a great video like copious amounts of potential energy :D
Yep, like Herbert Lomb in Pink Panther ;-)
@@bittechslow Safety officer experiencing facial twitch due to having a stroke.
Illuminating indeed
Imagine if Colin Furze got his hands on that!
Perish the thought. And his neighbor's hearing!
"So 'ere in my shed...
I have THIS THING!"
The world would not exist well his neighbours mainly
Good way to not only power the workshop, but warm it up too 😉
It’s amazing the tolerances involved in engineering something like that. I tinker around with 30-60mm Turbochargers and when you start getting to the RPM’s that this thing is capable of its mind boggling. Your average person doesn’t have a FN clue the skill and intelligence that’s involved creating things of this nature.
Love videos like this!
Kentucky Bear my friend john use to build artouste palouste for rolls Royce at Leavesden airport watford uk
Turboméca Artouste, Josef Sydlowski design ..
And we think lawyers are smart.
kentucky bluegrass: thats why there are universities
How many minutes in RPM's?
The cargo planes I flew in during the Viet Nam war had a monster turbine generator built right into the aircraft. They were C-97 four engine trans oceanic cargo planes, now very obsolete. The turbine was about the size of a VW bug. It SCREAMED from start to shut down at well over 150 decibels at around 15000 RPM. Sometimes it would be run for hours as us mechanics performed various work on the four engines. Each engine had a 28 volt starter that needed to be cranked and cranked. It was a form of torture. My ears rang for hours after the turbine was shut down.
The VA pays me $180 a month because of 140 DB inside a C130 for a few hours at a time. You cannot carry on a conversation inside the cargo hold. Take a Darvon and sleep.
All the heat, power and noise a man needs in his mancave... brilliant thingy..
That start up noise is just amazing
The best and most efficient way to energise six light bulbs!!!!
Go for guys! 😃
Nice engine, great crank up! :-) Well done!
My new camping generator. Perfect for those quiet evening's
Nice work! love that sound!!!
Awesome , we all need more neighbors with spare jet engines running in their back yard
Hardly a big deal if he only does it once every ten yrs.
My kinda neighbor that is if I can watch ...
If I could run my house on one, maybe the neighbor will buy me something quieter 😂😂
Sounds so cool. Just like the turbinator running on the salt
Next time my neighbour starts hammering sheet metal at 6am I will beat him with this at 2am 😁
very cool, always wanted to see what they look like out of the tail end of a plane. Your neighbors must love you lol
Very nice turbine saw one mounted to a Dixie chopper lawn mower at Daytona bike week a few years back sounds awesome
Audible "burp" at 0:25. Evidence that drinking has been going on.
What makes you think they've been drinking? I fart all the time, it doesn't mean I've been eating beans.
All good projects run on alcohol.
The ingestion of some form of alcoholic beverage is required when formulating epic plans such as these.
Yeah, in case the fact that they're firing up a gas turbine APU in the driveway doesn't clue you in, here's an additional hint
Sounds like a Alouette starting love that centrifugal compressor whine
Hey Bill, the nieghbors are having their annual family get together today. Let's say you and I get a case of beer and fire up the APU for an hour or two just to keep the dust off the turbine!!
NIce job.....

Howdy Spencer HHHHHiiiiii HAAAWWWWW , THATS A GREAT IDEAR... Bring some beers along too 🤪🤪😜🤣🤣
I love that sound when the fuel gets injected. Its just, satifying
The deep liftoff moan. Wirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr*Click* *Click* *Click* MOAAAANNNNNNN-N-N-N
This is solid gold right here. I so get this.
So this is what makes all that bloody noise when you climb into a plane in an airport and the turbines are off!
I always did wonder why it sounded like an engine was running... It just wasn't a thrust engine.
Yes. Usually it's in the very back body of the fuselage.
Yes and no. It can also be the air cycle machines that are utilising the bleed air from the apu to provide air conditioning to the plane. If the noise is coming from the tail area, chances are it’s the apu. If the noise is coming from under the fuselage to wing area its probably the air con packs.
Yes it is the auxiliary power unit, bwt I'm just 9

Kudos chaps this is one hella way to spend your day cheers
Wuau hermano esto es increíble! gracias por compartir, debe generar mucha electricidad
Grew up near an RAF base during the Cold War. Skies were always dark with Hercules exercising overhead but we'd get at least a couple of VC10's a week - ah, jet sound nostalgia!
Conheço turbomotor artouste IIIB que em regime de trabalho roda a 33500 RPM. Bons tempos. Já lá vão cinquenta anos.
I've finally found a suitable motor for my go cart
For a second I thought Inwas smelling the exhaust- then I realized that was just my house’s heater starting up
Light bulbs? Man strap that beast to something and make it go! Nice video, thanks for sharing.
Interesting fact. If you hold the plastic container sideways while pouring, you minimise the "glug" effect.

😂😂😂👏👏👏😂😂😂🖒
the best thing ever was the guy who invented nudie calender's for a shed.
Yes missus and the daughter have the house. I got the shed. Seems like a bad deal 🤔 but it works
lol 😂
Did years on Alouette 111 sounds nostalgic, the whine of a centrifugal compressor nice wet start.A starter generator .in front.
Really really nice. Same apu as VC10 tanker as I recall.
Also used as the APU on the Victor K2 tanker.
I love that spool up sound
The last time I heard one of these Artoustes was in the RAF. We had the Artouste in the wonderful Victor B1/K1 aircraft that I worked on all those years ago.
That's a very sexy space heater! 👍😎
Would love to have this guy as a neighbour 😂
That's one badass emergency power generator!
As the RR/Turbomeca Artouste it was also used as a helicopter and fixed wing motor.
Seeing men tinkering around with toys like these out of their garage. No matter dull and boring stuff - is happening in your own life, makes being alive well worth it! ,,,, Seeing - What is going to happen next?
i love how theres a jet engine at like 2,000,000 rpms and they're just like "yep that's the choke"
How many minutes in RPMS?
Insanely sweet
sounded lovely
YOU GUYS ROCK. RESPECT MUCH.
Those were used on military VC10s and in the beginning they had a habit of blowing up. Originally a Turbomeca Artouste then a Bristol Siddeley Artouste. I understand that ZD241 has acquired a refurbished Artouste.
I was in tears at the 00:25 burp, filling the liquid fuel tank, and the hand dryer comment. Thank You! ROFLMMFAO. ps: Good turbojet video.
We had a Rolls Royce Artouste APU engine on the Sultan's VC10 in the 70s - not that I ever worked on it. But years earlier I had worked on Alouette IIs with Turbomeca Artouste engines. I have only just realised the 'French Connection.'
Bloody brilliant!
Awesomeness!
Our ranch’s backup generator is a micro turbine by Capstone. It also produces heat on top of the electricity.
It’ll run on peanut oil, natural gas, kerosene. It’s pretty cool. Just changed the oil last month. It’s like $340 for a 5 gallon bucket so not too bad.
A friend has one of those... very nice pieces of kit!
How noisy is it during operation? What are the output tech details?
sweet
Pretty sure these powered the DH Trident airliners APU. Great to see and hear it.
That's no Clarke's space heater, nicely done that man
The air conditioning bleed ports are super cool, are they variable flow or just open/closed? It would make a serious hand drier ;-)
Wow lot of danger but you managed to run it full power.
HAhaha thank you so much for doing exactly what I was wanting to see. What a beautiful little engine!
The lovely aroma of burning Jet A1 is pleasantly intoxicating. Aladdin Pink works just as well.
Shame it can't be shared via you tube.
I was a ground equipment repairman in air force. Dash 60 apu were noisy but great piece of equipment.
It'll do as a nice quiet backup generator for when you get the midnight power cuts!
Here in SF, CA we're waiting for the Big One. I can see this would be great for power loss!! The neighborhood would be in such awe; turn all the house lights on and impress (depress??) them with the power racket. Cool. We're near Concord Buchannan Field, so we're just emulating an idling Citation jet!
Id be more worried about the pieces of trash that keep pooping on your streets and shooting up heroin
THAT might be a Freudian slip. We do have poop in the streets due to homelessness. A super-serious problem now. Large % of mentally challenged due to state hospitals closing. very sad )~8
Why don't you ever see two ladies hanging out next to the garage firing up a Rolls Royce Artouste APU engine? Dudes rock.
Awesome Video
I can smell the. exhaust. Very Cool.
Fitted to the Vulcan and the Victor V bombers...I have one under canvas at my house..keep meaning to get it running but don't have the time.. unfortunately.. would be grateful for details of your wiring set up.. should speed things up... Regards..
I was waiting for it to launch itself back into the shed
The sound of a gas turbine spooling up or of an idling diesel-electric locomotive is like music to my ears.
Know what series of Artouste this is? The engine was developed by Turbomeca and made by several manufacturers, the most notable being Blackburn.
Simply awesome 😄👍
Also, local power company in Indianapolis has converted some of their generation units to (natural) gas turbine, some combined cycle. Wonder if they sound like this if they're running them? I would assume so...
That funnel was kickin his ass...
This starts the big boys? Cool
I see you've gone for one of them super silent generators
Is that not one of the most gorgeous sounds you'll ever hear...? There they stand with their ear muffs, here i sit with headphones turning the volume up!
Nice little toy to have when the power goes out.
I hated working around these things. When I would pull into the parking lot and see the tail of the aircraft sticking outside of the hanger I knew that I was going to have to hear it all day long. It's a super high pitch, loud noise that consumes almost every bit of your mind, even with ear plugs in and ear muffs over the ears. I don't miss it.
What are the amps and volts produced by the APU? I know most aircraft operate at 400 Hz so as to keep filtering equipment as small as possible.
Its a 400-550SHP output so you can do with it as you please...
900hp = 690 kw volts X amps =watts so 210v X 3100 amps =. 690 000 watts or 690kw shaft power with no losses is capable .
Hey! Awesome video! What components would I need to get one of these running? I have a Boeing 737 APU that is in great condition and I would like to get it to run on its engine stand. It has its wiring harness and cannon plugs. Any help would be greatly appreciated! It is a GTCP85-129H. Thank you and keep the videos coming!
Hybrid powered go-cart in the offing?
the best music to my hears
Yes but it really would be great to see the full load performance
Brilliant engine and video. VC-10 is my fave old plane. The intake is different to that on the plane though?
Whizz up a jet engine in your driveway , what an ideal Sunday morning
MEN: "Wow, so cool, I could watch all day!"
WOMEN: "What does it do? Is that it?"
Nica Holly Men: Hand me that extension cord
Women: ok?
Men: now hand me the vacuum cleaner.
Women: OOH K?
Men: there you go!
Some of us girls love this stuff tho, but then we also drive trucks and drink beer
I wanted to see that pallet fly into the garage
Nice Leaf blower :D
Nice backup if the power ever goes out
i am sure your neighbours love you A LOT !!!!!!!!!
