Converting An Old WW2 Aircraft Radar Into An Oscilloscope
Instead of putting this vintage WW2 Nav/Radar display unit on the shelf of shame never to be used again, I thought it would be a good idea to convert it into an oscilloscope for the shack

The double-DIN unit is now in and working. I've removed the Frontrunner roof-rack; a bit disappointing to see that is has not survived the British weather that well.If you plan on buying any Frontrunner stuff throw away the rubbish nuts and bolts it comes with and replace them with stainless steel hardware.

I understood that the 'B' set had to be decomissioned before they could have been sold as surplus. Looking at adverts in old magazines shows this too. I was told this by the late & legendary Nev Kirk, G3JDK. The B set was what they called UHF back then & this set covered 229Mhz to 241Mhz, which as you know isn't an amateur band in the UK. Richard, G0OJF, UK
j'adore cet avion !!
Any idea where we can get a surplus 2D94-2 PC20 cylinder head?
No idea… Japan?
Did you move the GU50s around to different sockets to see if the red glow traveled with the valve or if any GU50 in that socket glows red? That's the first troubleshooting step, to make sure there isn't a problem with that socket or that channel's wiring. ;)

Where do you get this crap? This uses AM modulation onto a pentode grid. Will need to set 50% power with negative bias on 3 grid then it works cleanly.
Thats more or less how it works… suppressor grid modulation; not very efficient!

Hello Justin! How you make signatures on the front panel?
Hi, I used a Brother label printer. Nothing special!!
As you say……you don’t know much about them.
Everyone needs a jet engine in his backyard
Nice he asks "Dave" is that you? Haha Yes mister that's me !!!
bit late to the party...but change the cap across the meter.....common issue on these...still have mine working great with oem transistors...
Could something like this be achieved with larger ceramic piezo transducers? I found some of them working at around 2Mhz. I see here you're using 8.2Mhz... I'm curious to try this concept on something larger like a garden hose
Very sad to see
His call is G3SES, not SIS. de K4TO
I'm pleased to see how you've set the horizontal and vertical scan amplitudes (a reasonable compromise for the screen shape). But back in the day, sets were always set to overscan - no black visible at all - which always irritated me, as I'd rather have a (slightly) smaller picture but at least see all of it!
Thank you sir for the inspiration! Have you drawn up a schematic for this power supply and amp? I sure would love to have a copy. I am busy studying EX8A's translated webpage for information too.
Too much noise! Needs a major redesign !
Great video 73 de Gerald PA3GEG
Lads that would fit in my car. Just need an rpm step down and tough transmission and am literally away
Use lantern oil
Could I have the details please
I will chime in with other commentators by saying " THANK YOU " for making this video. I is always Great to see these Old Vintage Transmitters and Receivers in Action. For me this is part of which what makes the Hobby of Ham Radio so interesting.
Amazing
That is VERY cool!
2W is really low for those tubes. In 1920 they had housing on their gear.
That's great did similar stuff to.
Where is it?
My favourite airliner
Used to work on these in the RAF, only came here for the sound!
I was cringing the whole time you were poking that screwdriver around on the front panel.
Why does this TRF have so much crackly noise? If the noise source is the antenna or local switching device radiation, can one or more broadband filters be strategically installed to eliminate this noise?
Still no nozzle fitted. Does the spey have reheat? It looks like it did at some stage I have M701 mounted in a pickup truck And a T62 with gearbox for my next project
"Old men talking crap..." Yes, heard on 160, "Jimmy put up a tower a few years ago and he only put a guy wire on the east side because the prevailing wind was always from the east. Well, it stayed up for a couple of days, but then one day the wind changed coming in from the west..." And other tall tales.
My "home brew" Tx is 2 x 813, modulated by push 811A. 500WHF !
Simplemente maravilloso. Lamento no haber aprendido CW. En otra época con ese transmisor tendría el mundo s sus manos...

I can’t watch this holocaust.
do you pour walnut shells into the inlet to clean all the blades - or is that a myth?
Horrible distracting singing music thing whatever
Who cares
I noticed a lattice mast next to the building, a Radio Amateur by any chance???? Great demo.
To this day my favorite aircraft. Probably because my first flight ever was in the mid 1970s on a DL L1011, JFK-FLL. Huge, wide cabin, friendly employees from start to finish, and they served us a steak dinner in coach. It was magic.
I love this old tech. I have a 5C/450A which is similar but even larger. I haven't tested it, I must one day. I also have a beautiful 4212E triode, but sadly when I tested it, it had very low emission.
Way back in about 1970 I used the cabinet and the CRT from one of these to make an oscilloscope using a circuit from Practical Television. I stripped the scope down about 2006 and I still have the CRT. I may still have the motorised unit somewhere in my junk. I looked inside and it was some sort of rotary switch by the look of it. Amazing to see it again after all those years.
Beautiful set. My grandparents had on. I remember watching William Hartnell in Dr Who.
I happen to have this radio in my garage and wanted to know more about it. I discovered your video and found it quite a wealth of information on this radio. Thanks for Your video, Justin!
Great air plane and engine rb2 11 L1011 Tristar I miss the start up sound on that engine and flying it
One question, now what do we do?
Excellent stuff. Can you let me know where you get your remade chassis from? Paul De HS0ZLQ, G0MIH.
Hi Paul, I made it from a Hammond aluminium chassis which are readily available. The rest is cut aluminium sheets and stainless perf sheet for the top
