  • The Lost World of The Skaguay Power Plant
Join us as we journey through valleys, down canyons, and across streams to a long-lost Colorado Power Plant. This Little Power Plant tucked away still holds some treasures of the past.
After the flood, the place was abandoned. The crumbling cliffs of Beaver Creek Canyon have guarded the site ever since.
These days, few people visit. On rare occasions, the rocky slopes are surveyed at all, it is usually through the eyes of bighorn sheep, mule deer, and members of one of the largest concentrations of mountain lions in Colorado.

I just want you to know that my family LIVED at Skaguay Power Plant roughly from 1934 until about 1942 when my sister started school in 1942 when we moved to Victor so she could attend first grade. My Daddy was one of the hydro-electric plant operators and it supplied electricity to the surrounding area - Victor, Cripple Creek and beyond. He would just come into Victor on his days off but lived at in our house for work then we returned for the summer. We moved from Skagway to Colorado Springs in 1945. As you face the front of the plant with the log cabin up on the hill behind you, our house was the one to your left (not the one with the tree log leaning against it - there were the three houses and a log cabin for visitors. It was a magical place to live what with the location and the animals. There was what we called the landing about 12 miles from Victor where there were garages to park our cars. Then on the side of the mountain were two flights of wooden steps with 100 steps in each one that took us down the side of the mountain to a flat place where there was a tram car which ran on narrow tracks like railroad tracks. It was a cable car and it had a cable that was attached underneath it and the cable was housed in the cable house behind where the track began. The tram car was an open box with two rows of benches to sit. When we were ready to go, Daddy would signal the plant operator which had wires running along the same track and the operator would release the cable from the housing and it would allow the tram car to be lowered down the tracks until it came to the end of the tracks which were right in front of the log cabin, facing the front of the power plant. Then the tram car would sit there until someone wanted to go to Victor and the process was reversed...the cable would then pull the tram car up to the top. I cannot remember how far the tracks ran but it was probably 15--20 minutes at least for the trip. Everything there was brought down in the same manner - people, groceries, etc. One time there was after a windstorm there was a twig that was caught under the wheel so when the cable was released, it started but the tram car did not move but there was released cable and so when it did I was thrown against the front of the car and broke my nose and had a concussion...but Daddy instantly signaled the operator and he stopped the cable immediately and the tram car stayed on the tracks and the rest of my family were OK - then Daddy signaled again and we moved down the track home. I am 84 now and I will NEVER forget living in Skaguay. A beautiful place for sure!

My grandfather worked in that powerplant, and my mom and aunt and grandma lived in one of those houses. Not the one with the tree/log leaning on it. :) Thank you for taking me on this journey of my mom's past. My grandpa was one of the hydro-electric plant operators and it supplied electricity to Victor, Cripple Creek and beyond.

How cool to have family that used to live and work there!! I'm intrigued with this place because when Nikola Tesla was in Colorado Springs doing experiments and stuff, he was involved with this power plant is what I heard, it's so cool to see inside of it, the "Pelton Wheels" are still there and what's left of the generators after the scrappers were there.
Thank you for this video tour! Nice job!

Along the hike down you should have seen some remnants of the old wooden pipes that brought the water down from the dam.

back in 2020 i got lost on this hike for 13 hours. there were little to no trail markers and to this day i have nightmares about that place. the only reason we got out is because we realized our phones still had gps and we used google maps to find the dam again.

This video is amazing captures this place great, how difficult do you think it would be to get up to those other buildings up the hill? Looks surreal up there!

Skaguay is a bit of a long day already. Im sure you could find a way up if you really really wanted to see it. Almost might be easier to find a way from the top that doesn’t follow the trail. Let me know if you decide to go check it out :)

@@WillHaackme and my friend successfully completed the journey up there, it is insanely beautiful and amplifies how surreal the entire power plant is by giving you a look from above and a perspective of how things were brought there. So many things from over 60 years ago truly frozen in time as if those people back then never knew if they would come back or not…
