  • Mahindra has already pushed into North America's tractor market, and now the Indian company is here with its latest foray into off-road vehicles, but the ROXOR is no tractor. So why does it look so much like a Jeep and what is it like to take it on the trail? Stephen Elmer goes for a first drive and gives his impressions of this quirky side-by-side.

Jeep has to be butthurt as hell for not thinking of this idea first. That said, I doubt they will make a street legal one because the fact it isn't street legal is the only reason they won the case as far as I know. It's fine as it is, if you want street legal an older Jeep is pretty cheap or an imported Mitsubishi Jeep which is also diesel and street legal. It would be tough to get sales from that market in my opinion. But as a side by side I see this doing very well. It's a lot more useful than a Polaris ranger, and no having to pay for license and insurance like an actual Jeep. And most states it can be legally driven to the fields on road as farm equipment.

I wouldn't say it's expensive because of the price tag. What makes it expensive is the fact that it only does 45 miles an hour. And it's illegal to get in it and drive it on the street that's what you get for $16,000 plus . And when you think about it that way it sounds pretty shity.

    • @wun1gee

There are already aftermarket flashes for the ECU that lift the electronically-limited speed. One video has them getting it to almost 80mph on a 1/4 mile dyno, while making over 100 horsepower at the rear wheels. The little 2.5L turbo diesel is massively detuned in the ECU. It's got so much more potential than it's realizing because of the electronic detune.
If you want to drive it on the street, go find an old rusting CJ, grab the VIN plate, put the VIN plate on the Roxor and register it as a CJ. Problem solved.

    Here’s Mahindra’s full statement:
We understand that a complaint has been filed by FCA with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) against Mahindra. Mahindra has not yet been served with the complaint and we prefer not to comment at length on the dispute at this time. However, we have reviewed FCA’s core filing and find it to be without merit. Mahindra has a historic relationship and agreements with FCA and its predecessors that go back seventy years. The relationship began in the 1940’s with the original agreement with Willys and continues to this day, with the most recent agreement executed with FCA (then Chrysler Group LLC) in 2009. Our actions, products, and product distribution (including ROXOR) both honor the legacy of the relationship and the terms of our agreements with FCA. Mahindra has been co-existing with FCA (and the Jeep brand) for over 25 years in India and in many other countries. The ROXOR is a derivative of Mahindra vehicles distributed in those markets. Based on these agreements and our history, we believe that FCA’s claims are baseless and Mahindra is well within its rights to both manufacture and distribute the ROXOR off-road vehicle.

chris spencer there’s several already. There’s a black LE at motor sports nation in Waterford, and a black one as well as a red one at Higgins power sports in Barre MA which isn’t a long drive away. They even have a good dirt trail you can test it on.. I know this because I did it.. just a warning, as a Connecticut resident myself I opted not to buy a Roxor specifically because of the difficulty for us to use them. That is if you intend to use it legally..If you have a large piece of private property go for it, but if you are are used to hauling UTVs out of state to use them you may want to do some research about your preferred trails.. The vast majority of Massachusetts and New Hampshire UTV trails don’t allow the Roxor because it is over the weight limit for a UTV registration. And unfortunately you can’t bring it on a lot of the OHV or jeep trails because it cannot be registered as a street legal vehicle either.. EDIT... motorsports Nation Waterford now has a Grey one as well.

These guys have been making the so called real jeep for more years than the real jeep company, so i guess they know a few things about how to take care of the basics rather than give you heated seats and steering wheel. All the remote and inaccessible places rely on a mahindra (a lot like toyota in other markets). The tow rating appears to be downgraded for regulatory reasons. The heavy weight is the result of reinforcements done on the real jeep chassis to make it work in India, the torture these things endure in our plantation trail everyday made me a believer. Adrian Wevers Back in the 50s, Mahindra had official license from Willys Overland to manufacture these great vehicles.
The problem in the West is that, every brand is sold & purchased so many times that, every new buyer (manufacturer) dilutes the original & with that, dilutes the spirit of the original.

Yah its over 15k just like damn near every new side by side and you cant drive it on the highway, just like every side by side. For those guys who love old school mechanical fun these should sell like hotcakes. Anyone who buys a 20k sxs pretty much knows 20k gets you a real bad ass off road truck but they still by side by sides so obviously the market demand is there. I give them props for making this and hope to see a work oriented pickup style in the future. Or just give us the cheap stripped diesel mahindra truck we were supposed to get 6-8 years ago.

Now there are "trail" side by sides that need to be under 50" which there are only about 4, the most common and longest running a Polaris RZR. So no it's not a "trail" size which was established for ATVs in the first place, but it is a standard SxS width.

Tire package, winch package, roof should be a hartop. tow hitch, windshield with intermittent wipers and a heater with windshield defrost. mirrors, cab, signals, horn. The ROXOR needs to fit northern climates for all seasons use. Suitable for off road and can be driven on road in Ontario, Canada. More for local or short trip driving. Not sure how good the radio is but it would be a nice added feature if it can do what a typical AM/FM radio can do and that means bringing in clear radio signal. Keep it simple, user friendly and minimize the bling. Not fond of bright colors but olive green, navy grey, and/or camo.

I built trails in Co. at 9,000 ft, and skidded full grown ponderosa pine logs full size logs down a mountain side slope on a zigzag trail I made in a 62 jeep with a small 4 cylinder (it was a steep slope). The High and low speed for each gear was amazing , low was so low you could let it idle in gear and it would climb straight up a mountain, you could get out and walk next to it on flat land. The PTO would run a winch up front, there was a throttle nob you could pull out to set the rpm. This Roxor looks very much like the unstoppable CJ3. I want one.

This vehicle has a lot of potential I think. For one IT ISN'T A WRETCHED AMC or Chrysler product.
I see these UTVs out there with four seats that cost 8-10 grand easy, and this thing is actually useful, not a toy. It has a real liquid-cooled and full-pressure lubrication diesel engine in it, not some aircooled splash-lubed gasoline burner. It also has a real geared standard transmission with a real suspension. It is basically the Willys WWII Jeep which was the best vehicle to ever carry that name. Every CJ I've ever had the misfortune of being around has been a non-stop problem, mostly because they were poorly engineered/poorly manufactured cars when they were new. Add in a few decades of decay and you get a hunk of junk that sits in your yard and provides an excellent rabbit habitat but not much else. Wranglers are outrageously expensive, and it doesn't take long when you start working on one to realize they are absolute garbage, especially if you have one with those awful Renix electrical systems. The AMC I-6 was an ok engine, but it wont be able to deliver the low speed torque or efficiency of this modern Mahindra diesel.
An ag-model with a pto would BE the finest vehicle for pulling a hay baler or hay wagons around. It would also make a great vehicle for a rancher or grazier.

tommy harrell wasn’t meant to be a completely specific comparison. Both are relatively the same size, both have similar suspension set ups, both use exclusively a manual transmission, and both have anemic horsepower outputs. The samurai is just far more economical.

I just bought a Jeep Rubicon Unlimited with 26,000 for $13,000.
It's in very good condition with ice cold air conditioning and a inline 6. Its completely at home off road and I daily drive it as well.

Lovely, intelligent marketing strategy for introducing a new product in competitive and aggressive US automobile market.

You love that heavy meaty feeling in your hands don’t you!! Lol I think these are a cool way to get an old Jeep that’s brand new with a good motor.with some lockers a lift and ditch the speed limiter this could be an awesome way to get a cool old school 4x4 that’s not covered in rust and a great starting point to customize! Thanks for the review👍🏿

With a PTO, small bed 1 ft longer and 8" longer wheelbase this would be a perfect farm vehicle. 15" steel wheels please.

I think the savings grace for Roxor would be a new powerplant for the Cj5. Weight is close between the two but Americans have tons of replacement parts for body, suspension and drive train upgrades. We need a great Cj5 engine drop in,
