The MG Cyberster was notably missing at the Shanghai Auto Show. Finally we got the chance to take the MG Cyberster on a drive in the tropical island of Hainan. Unfortunately, tropical islands also have tropical storms. But that didn’t stop us having roof down fun in the MG Cyberster.
MG heritage aside, the Cyberster is an absolute brilliant EV in it’s own right. Heading to the UK, we expect big things from MG’s latest Halo EV.

@@ChinaDriven I think MG electric, apart from the ZS, are all good looking cars in their own way, and I would be happy to have any on my drive. Unfortunately, this one will never be within my reach, and I'm not sure if I would be able to get in and out of it anyway.

As soon as you have a DISTINCTIVE car, there are going to be those who don't like it! But like the classic cars of ALL makes, in FIFTY years time, the same people will ACCEPT them "BECAUSE THEY ARE OLD!"
It looks awesome, except for those cringy, arrow-shaped rear lights. Block them with your fingers on screen and it looks amazing!
Perhaps someone will make an aftermarket replacement. Probably my least favourite design feature

Nice car and would seriously consider it in spite of (A) The hideous taillights. (B) Bose automotive sound systems are sold via marketing, not performance. BOSE = Buy Other Sound Equipment.

this will be affordable in the way 'a first mass-produced EV soft-top roadster with sub 4sec 0-62' - affordable' This will be affordable for people that can afford a weekend getaway EV. the way as Cayman is affordable for the Porsche standards ;) I LOVE this car, I would get it on day one, and wrap it in BRG on day two, but I think you shouldn't mention the China price as the price will be completely different in the UK :(
pretty much. the Chinese pricing is useful for those in other markets which may get this later, like Thailand. They can figure out the mark up of other MGs in Thailand and guess roughly where this will fall price wise if it ends up there.

Some of that price increase is shipping and tariffs on import. But the companies also set prices vs competition in that market. When Peugeot is charging £40K for an EV hatchback…can’t blame MG thinking £60K seems reasonable in comparison.
In China pricing is much more fierce in every segment of EVs. Pricing in the UK is still unreasonable

My only point is people were looking at me as I was mad paying GBP45k for Skoda.. and now, the MG will be asking for 60k. this prices were reserved for premium brands just a decade ago. this is a level of MB E-class cabrio, yes, slower, but beautiful and with 'the star'. and if you like you can travel with your friends or SO and a dog.
I am saying 60k will make this car not an enthusiast car, but a car that you REALLY want to buy, and I wish I would have spare 60k for my mid-life crisis car
@@michalklucz6907 Under 550,000RMB which is £62.8K, there will be two RWD versions 309hp & 335hp…so maybe they get to the £40K ish mark? Which would put it in Merc SLC/SLK, BMW Z4. So not quite enthusiast level no. But maybe could lead to a smaller, less premium 2 seater…that would be interesting. Something to replace the MG TF. 250hp, rwd, 2 seat drop-top
When will MG China begin deliveries in China? The estimates for various global markets with preorders is mid-summer. I would expect the deliveries within China to be before that target. If anyone has any update let us know.
The only MG, the only Chinese car I really want. Surely it's a seriously good quality car to have.
Probably needs blacked out wheels or another design. “Cyberster” badge looks life an afterthought; funny-looking font. The MG logo in the front looks too large.

Yes they are meant to be designed based on the UK flag…but they are missing the vertical line so they end up looking like arrows.

The cyberster name is a bit derivative. I don't know why they didn't come up with a successor name from the F to TF to EF? or something. It also doesn't match the rest of MG name structure, bit random and a bit try hard.

yes. a lot of EVs have this “feature”. I think the non-engine sounds are the best
Is the sound just inside or does it play outside too? Silent mode will be my preference, but I do like the sound the Porsche Taycan makes.

the Porsche and Audi sounds seem more connected to what the car is doing. This like many of them a bit gimmicky
I hope they also have fake fart sound that is also piped externally. This would really let bystander that you have really ripped a nasty one.
If I buy one ,I would remove all the exterior badges.

Hahahaha. The roof is watertight. Don’t worry about that. If you watch to the very end of the video you’ll see why!

@@arda99 You probably gotta try. I drive a BMW E89, about the same length as the MG, and the windshield is narrow too. I am also 1,84m tall :). Sometimes it can get into my view, but it works quite well, I got used to it. I have not watched the whole video, so as long as you can to a degree lower the seat it should be fine. :)

It is not the fastest MG car in history, in 1957 an MG car ran at 245 mph and took the category F land speed record.

I think the scissor doors are unnecessary. especially when it drives as well as it does. doesn’t need gimmicks.
I assume MG are hoping to make a splash with this as a return to MG roadsters. I hope it spurs a lower powered simpler and cheaper roadster.

Not to my taste. It looks like a life-long nerd who’s suddenly decided, after a mid life crisis, to dress all cool but doesn’t know how and keeps making fashion mistakes.
Those doors don’t suit the body, they look OTT and out of sequence with the rest of the car and the front lip reminds me of an Inostrancevia. The back end is a mess - huge arrows framed by an angular strip light which doesn’t match the rest of the design language. It’s incoherent.
I’m getting visions of a balding man who’s wearing a pony tail to compensate.
HAHA, thanks for your vivid description. Like everything varying views means we get a wide range of vehicles. And that makes it interesting. I agree the back-end is perhaps my least favourite angle.
I also forgot to talk more about the scissor doors. What is wanted to say was that when it drives as good as it does, and IMO looks good there’s no need for gimmicks.
however, compared to other automatic doors and auto scissor doors these ones rarely get interrupted when opening, so at least they calibrated nicely.

I think the clash of styles is the MG team trying to tie the design into the 1990's MG model. That's where we feel a hint of the design not being quite up to date.
@@temper44 to be honest I’m not in agreement with MG trying to tie everything into their “heritage” as a marketing strategy or design. I think as they move to an EV company they can break free and forge a new path.
I do think that this shows they are breaking away from what they did when they first took ownership of MG which was very blaaahhhhh cheap cars with underpowered engines.
This drives really well. Looks decent. And definitely gives hope for the brand going forwards.
@@ChinaDriven I don't mind it. We've seen so many Chinese cars that are blatant ripoffs of European designs, its just fun to see these brands branch out and try their own designs. Find their own design language.
MG hired Brits to design their new cars and adapt them to European tastes, and Volvo hired Swedes. When you're a new brand you have to swing for the fences to try and stick out from the crowd.
