Ronaldo vs Cole in the prem was always the best battle on the pitch whenever United played Arsenal or Chelsea later on in Cole’s career.

Why do pundits bring up the question of the so called 'Golden Generation' 'Failing?! LOOK at BRAZIL, FRANCE, GERMANY, ITALY at the time..all had squads packed full of world class quality.
But they all won the world cup in the last 5 world cup tournaments.
Exactly. England were never good enough. We had a lot of players that were very good Premier League players - but that didn't make them World Class International players. In most tournaments we got as far as we should have.

Arsenal fan here and Ashley pissed me off when he left for Chelsea and the way it happened.
As a left back in my youth I loved him, was my favourite player for a while. I like his honesty here though, we all make mistakes and fair play to him.

at the same time, Ashley Cole also had him in his pocket many times. It was a more even battle were Ronaldo maybe won some and lost some. Apart from Ashley Cole, not many others can say that they won their fair share of one v one battles against Ronoldo especially when he was in his dribbling prime.
Sorry but messi and Ronaldo are only comparable by the amount of goals they score. Messi is superior in the more important aspects of the game ie vision, dribbling, passing. You can say cr is faster but it has very little significance for me to say he’s better than Messi.
When he was at Man utd he would dribble a lot, he assisted the likes of Rooney and Tevez and score long range goals which demonstrated the technique and power he has but the guy has evolved and plays smarter now.

Messi does have greater dribbling but the vision part I'm not sure about. Ronaldo's playmaking ability is really underappreciated because of his persona (maybe) I feel. When you watch Ronaldo it's like he has a supernatural knack for both the pass and position. He punches way above his ability. For me, he's the best. Messi is undeniably also a great, I watch a lot of his games too. But it's just not the same feeling I have when watching him. I think the fact I watched Messi win 4 balon d'ors consecutively and believing that Ronaldo will catch up also played a part. I absolutely admire Ronaldo's ability to back himself.

I see messi play one pass that cuts out a whole mid and defence which leaves he’s teammate one on one many times. I rarely see Ronaldo do that. But this has shown me that all football fans see things different because I don’t think there is anything supernatural about Ronaldo except he’s goal scoring abilities. Which is not a bad thing. But supernatural isn’t the word id use for he’s other attributes.

We have a category for the best left back or best goalkeeper, they are called "the best left back" or "the best GK". I would say World class is being in the top 3 or 4 in your position in the world. Again subjective, as some might say top 5 or top 10 but certainly not top one. Ashleycole was more than a world class left back, he was the best left back on the planet for years.

England's golden generation underachieved for three reasons: Brazil, France, and Italy. During that period, England had great players, but if you're comparing their players to those other 3 countries at the time, you can see why they underachieved. Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Argentina and maybe even Germany were in similar situations at the time. Don't get me wrong, England's golden generation squad was great, but it wasn't comparable to the other 3. Although, I do believe that England's squad at the time would've probably won at least a Euro or World Cup in modern football, as they were very talented.

Some possible reasons "The Golden Generation" didn't get as far in international tournaments as they possibly should have done:
- Bad management
- Psychological pressure / the lack of the "will to win" as leaders
- Press/Media pressure. Maybe they weren't as good as journalists made them out to be.
