I'm surprised you didn't mention the tie-in between Henry and Russell Crowe. When Russell was filming Proof of Life, they filmed part of it at Stowe prep school, which is where Henry went to school. Between takes, Henry went up to Russell and asked him about being an actor. Russell was honest and told him how hard it was, but encouraged him. He later sent him an autographed photo. When they were filming MOS, Russell thought Henry looked so familiar and asked him if they'd met. Henry told him who he was and that Russell was one of the reasons he became an actor. I thought it was a pretty cool coincidence.

That being said, returns isn't a bad movie and had a lot of potential but they really dropped the ball in forcing Brandon into cloning Reeve's superman instead of allowing him to make the character his own. They let Kevin Spacey do his own thing with Luthor though the look was obilously based off of Gene Hackman's version. MoS is great though imo. (And I like Christopher Reeve as superman in I and II and I like Brandon Routh in the role, I'm not a Supes hater)
Henry got a rough deal as he is a great actor. Specifically from the studio execs, as is almost always the case, but also from us fans as we expected more from an actor who is an uberfan, but we all forgot that beancounters and management types with huge salaries and their eyes on 'The Prize" were always going to shout down someone like him. He might know much more than them, he might be the big draw that makes them millions to share out in dividends and bonuses, but to them he is just the last thing they used to load up their own wallets.

Henry Cavill almost was James Bond in the 2006 reboot film: *"Casino Royale"* before he became Superman, but at the age of 22, he was deemed by the producers as too young to play Bond. So they went with Daniel Craig instead.

For the most part, I really liked the Man of Steel movie. I have heard people hating the fact that Superman killed Zod and that Superman has a no kill code. My argument to that is that most people who have a no kill code usually have been closely affected by the violent death of someone in their lives. With Batman it is his parents. In this case, it's Superman with one of the few surviving members of his race. He did the only thing he could think of to save the people Zod was about to kill with his heat vision. I can imagine Superman wracked with guilt over what he did. I can imagine him locked away in his Fortress of Solitude for hours on end going over the death of Zod and try desperately to see if there were any other solutions to the dilemma that he overlooked in the heat of the moment. That would be where Superman no kill code could stem from in the Synderverse.

    • @oldandtiredskater

For the no kill code, when anyone complains about it to me with MoS, I just point them to Superman 2 in which, after Zod has literally become a normal human, Christopher Reeve's Superman tortures and then outright murders him. Like, straight up threw him to his death in a seemingly bottomless pit. At least Cavil's had a solid reason, was begging Zod to stop and immediately felt bad about it.

I think the way that this superman approached working with the human military was collaborative as he understood they would fear him, but constantly put himself in danger to save them during the battle of Smallville. I think Michael Shannon is one of the best villains we’ve seen due to his portrayal, an incredibly well written character in the film. Man of Steel is one my favorite comic book movies. It has a depth that not even the first iconic Christopher Reeve Superman movie has.
I never understand the criticism this movie receives. Things like:
    - Why can't SuperMAN have doubts - he may have powers but at heart - he is still a human being. Note: He always does the right thing and just has moments of doubt (don't we all)
    - Superman doesn't kill: Why doesn't he kill? I think it's boring that he just doesn't do it. It makes more sense that he allowed the circumstances to occur that forced him into having no choice and he never wants to feel that way again! Much more interesting.
    - Destruction of Metropolis: Anyone who ACTUALLY watched the Avengers movie - there were buildings being destroyed - people were getting hurt - they just didn't show it. I think it raises the stakes if you ACTUALLY see the destruction. The World engine is raising people up in the air and pulverizing them into the ground into pieces. Yes - when Zod said he was going to terra form the earth - that's what it would be like. That's why when Superman stands up - after being tossed around like a toy - and defeats the world engine - it makes it more satisfying.

While watching this video, it surprised me to hear you bash the 3D conversion. I was one of about 200 people who did the conversion on Man of Steel. At the time, the company I worked for was known for their meticulous and consistent conversion including the Disney's 'The Little Mermaid', 'Top Gun' and 'Transformers." We were given guidelines from the production company as to how they wanted it to look and feel. I've seen some of our conversions on different screens and they each look different so it's possible that the film wasn't being shown properly. It also depends on where you sit. Dead center (left to right, top to bottom) gives the best results. I'm not trying to invalidate your experience or argue your opinion, just giving you some additional information.
Please keep up the great work and hopefully you have a better 3D viewing experience in the future.

I wished it had been a trilogy.. some of the best music score in movie history too. I still get emotional hearing that first flight score. Great movie. Great take. Great cast (apart from Lois)

I commented this before watching the video Mark and I'm glad you touched up on the score. I also can't believe it lost to iron man 3. Iron man 3 was depressing and a terrible movie. Another great video Mark!

Michael Shannon was an amazing Zod but can you imagine a Daniel Day Lewis version 🤯

I love that Cavill was a bigger nerd than anyone else on production.

Cavill and the guy who played Zod were perfect for those parts

I enjoyed it, it's a bit too long but overall some great ideas that could have investigated further in a sequel! Plus, Hans Zimmer's score is incredible!

Fun fact, it's actually the same length as the 1978 Christopher Reeve movie.

One of my favourite comic book origin films! I can watch it over and over! The Krypton sequence, first flight and the final battle were incredible on the big screen 🔥🔥

That other suit that Henry Cavill wore, looks like the superman suit from the 90’s show, “ Lois and Clark: the adventures of Superman”

I absolutely adore this film. This and Batman Begins are tops, for me. I do like the Snyder Cut of BvS and the first Wonder Women. Real shame where this universe went and we won't get another Man of Steel. The action is jaw dropping in this film and packs an emotional punch. Cavil was amazing.
I like Returns as much as Man of Steel, but only as a follow-up to the originals. I think it worked.

@@pa.encema2821Agreed. Personally, it's my favorite "hero" fight scene. It's brutal, and messy. The exact way it likely would be in real life.

I am surprised you didn't mention that Henry Cavill missed the casting call for Superman because he was playing World of Warcraft.

Not having Lex Luther or crypnite in Man of Steel really bothered me because it's a major part of the Superman universe. So I give the movie 7 out of 10 rating.

Imagine having Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner for a dad. Or dads. Costner teaches you how to play baseball, Crowe teaches you how to swing a sword.
