Born in 1957 here, Boss. I first heard Tuesday Afternoon and Nights In White Satin on the radio and rushed out to buy the Album. I laid on the floor, with head phones on, and listened to it 3 times through. 'Nights' is the clincher. You are spot on: it's a day, a month, a season, a year, a LIFETIME....believe me...it is just as emotional now at 62 as it was at 12...from two different points of view, to paraphrase Obiwan . BTW, I LOVE your takes on these old classics with fresh ears and eyes that so many of us have grown up on! Thank you for sharing!!

Brilliant, gorgeous album. Justin Hayward was only 19 when this was written and composed. Nights In White Satin has been my favorite song since it’s release in 1967❤️❤️❤️
He had just turned 21 when DOFP was released in Nov 1967, but I am not sure when he actually wrote it., Justin was born October 14, 1946. They were supposedly playing some of this album live on stage for a while before they recorded and released. My guess is, he was probably 20 when he composed and wrote it.
Amazing, 1967 and it's still just as haunting, just as powerful 50 years later.

When I first heard this song back around 1970 it changed how I listen to music. I started actually LISTENING to music. I’ve been a Moody Blues fan ever since.

I saw them in the 80s in Toronto. At the end of NIWS they received a 5 minute standing ovation. It was cool to see that they didn’t know how to handle the adulation. Eventually the audience quieted enough to allow them to continue, but I will never forget that moment. Have loved this song (and the whole album) since I first heard it 50 years ago. Timeless!

This was a stand alone song written before the album concept was created. It’s about unrequited love. It’s about a girl he loved from afar. Writing letters he never intended to send her. Seeing other people in happy relationships and he is alone. They can’t understand what he is feeling. It’s a beautiful melancholy song.

I was 19 going on 20 when I wrote it, and I had no idea what it was really about. I was at the end of one big love affair and starting another, and it was not meant to be a single,” Hayward says. “It was the opposite of what a single should be!”
Justin Hayward is the master of songs of this type. Beautiful and sad at the same time. “Forever Autumn” from the “Jeff Wayne’s War of the World’s” is a classic from him.

Popular opinion says The White Album from The Beatles in 1968 started the whole progressive rock movement. Arguably, I think it was Days of Future Passed in 1967...
Not sure I'd call The White Album specifically a prog album, Sgt.Pepper fits that bill better, a whole album of songs with a thematic concept, links and segues, and production on a grand scale with elements of rock band and orchestra combined. 'Days of future passed' definitely fulfils that definition within popular music. I would argue the 'concept' album (though not named as such) comes much earlier, within classical music itself, such as 'The Planet Suite'. 'Days of future passed' was an experiment to mix a modern band and orchestra, for the record label to showcase their brand new stereo studio and system, and the band delivered an album that sent them on a new musical direction. All the elements on this album would form a template for all the following albums through to their 'The seventh sojourn' album. All the band members would contribute their own songs and have a vocal spot each, except for the drummer who would provide a poem read by the keyboard player. The songs would blend into one another and be intended to be played in sequence as an 'A side and a 'B' side of the vinyl album. Much like 'Nights in white satin', some tracks were selected to be re-recorded or re - edited to create an abridged version that could be released as a chart single.

I know but it's sacrilegious to say this but I think the Beatles are highly overrated. It's not that they weren't a really good band it's just they don't walk on water the way people think in my opinion.

I'm in no doubt that 'Days Of Future Passed' deserves to be recognised as the progenitor of the concept album as we understand it - putting Sgt Pepper in that category is a bit of a stretch - but it was by no means the first of its kind. The original Nirvana released 'The Story Of Simon Simopath' the month before DOFP, and if dark forces hadn't intervened we might also have had the Beach Boys' 'Smile' and the Pretty Things 'S F Sorrow' by then. One project from the same year that failed to see the light of day at all was the 'teenage opera' created by Mark Wirtz and Keith West, despite the fact that it had spawned a #2 UK chart single.
Just imagine hearing this album back in the day. The Moody Blues were ahead of their time. I could hardly wait for their next album to come out. They have been my favorite band (Justin Hayward singularly as well) for all time. Their music is always in. I hear some song out now on the radio and I instead listen to a Moodies' song. With "Nights", it is a beautiful song but so very sad. He sees people walking by hand in hand and they are oblivious of how he hurts. People around him no nothing of his heartache, and oh how he loves her. It is like a death song. Death of a relationship to which has broken his heart. Beautiful but heart grabbing. He wrote this song after a girl broke up with him and she broke his heart. A little later he runs into another gal and they had a fling and when the relationship was over, she gave him white, satin sheets. Justin explained this in an interview he gave many years ago. This is what makes this song so beautiful and so very sad. As Justin said when a love affair breaks up, someone gets hurt and they have to go through this sort of death....of much sadness, depression, tears, emptiness, heart broken, etc.
I wish I could go back to 1967, to the first time I heard this and see the look on my 9 year old face.
One of The advantages of the old vinyl albums was the inside jackets often had the lyrics printed to all the songs...a great boon, as some of these online versions are wrong....
We can thank The Beatles for that, as they were the first rock/pop band to print lyrics on the covers! They were the first to do so many things, musically, and related to pop culture, as well as some "political" firsts!
Yes, and liner notes telling us who backed them up, key musicians, and often a back story...
They were also good for separating the chaff from the wheat, the seeds from the grass etc. LOL

You see now why so many people of about my age consider it required listening, in the same way as "Dark Side Of The Moon", "Quadrophenia" and "Aqualung". That you chose to seek it out and experience it in order, in its entirety, is a testament to your intelligence and your dedication.
"Nights In White Satin" was released as a single, with all the orchestration before and after the lyrics removed, as well as "Late Lament". The song remained so popular that, nine years after its release, it was the theme of my Senior Prom. (I didn't end up attending my prom, due to the strenuous objections of my girlfriend. Her exact wording was: "What the f*ck is wrong with you, have you gone even more insane??!!!")
The first time I heard "Days Of Future Passed" in its entirety was through another musical touchstone of my life, The Seventh Day. My local FM station did a show every Sunday night from Midnight to 6:00 AM, wherein they played seven albums in their entirety, with the only commercial breaks between each album side. (Double albums counted as two.) The DJ actively encouraged listeners to record the show, giving them an extra 30 seconds of silence before and after each side in which to turn their tape recorder on and off. The first album of every show was a major new release from that week, and frequently the second album was as well.
The Seventh Day caused a profusion of home-recorded 8-Tracks and Cassettes to appear in bedrooms and dashboards all around town. It also increased the sales of new albums; if you liked what you heard, you'd naturally want to buy a copy on vinyl, thus getting the cover art, lyrics, and improved stereo sound. And if you heard an older album you'd missed, or one you'd forgotten but really liked hearing again, you'd go buy that too.
The show's primary sponsor was Boogie Records, a local store that also gave customers a $1 discount on any album played on the show that week (which usually amounted to a 25 per cent savings). Boogie also catered to large-scale collectors: buy ten albums at a time and you'd get a 20 per cent discount on all ten.

They recorded a live album called "A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra" in September 1992 and I was there !!! And I can tell you that they were just as good then as they ever were. Great analysis as always !✌❤🌻😷🎶
I've seen them at Red Rocks several times. Tough to beat Red Rocks for any concert, but listening to them with the lights of Denver at twilight off in the distance over the stage is something else.

Ah, yes - Nights in White Satin...one of the most beautiful tracks ever laid down. Justin Hayward's voice was just so perfect for this melody. I agree with LoopORama and can also recommend the War of the Worlds concept album by Jeff Wayne - Forever Autumn by Justin is another classic that I remember from my school days. They just don't make music like this anymore.
In the 1970's, when I was a teenager - teenage girls thought this was the most romantic song in the world... Nights In White Satin, that is.

This cut was played as a single on Top Ten radio back in the day.
The day is not only a metaphor for a life but the title is a clue....its days of future passed. It's the patterns that you will repeat over and over in the future before it is over. The message to me is hold on to what is good as well as you are able to before that long good night.
Also the image of the nights (knights) in white satin is a reference to soldiers returning home in caskets from the Viet Nam war.

I grew up in a poor, broken home. We didn't have much, but what we did have was a flea market record player and an old set of head phones with the giant, curled cord. Many sleepless nights I, not unlike yourself, went on long musical voyages with the likes of Simon and Garfunkel, Procal Harum, Pink Floyd, and of course- the Moody Blues. I genuinely appreciate you sharing your journey with us, it helps me remember my connection with music and lyrics. Keep doing great work, my friend.

When I was a teenager in the early 1980s, a neighbor let me plow through their record collection and take whichever ones I wanted because they had recorded all of them to cassette tape, lol. This album was one of the ones I snagged. Life was never the same after that fateful day. :)

I'll never forget the night my best friend got drunk and was listening to this song on headphones. She started singing. Bad idea. Listening to someone who can hear the song (when you can't) sing off-key and way too loud is just wrong. "Wooooo, I looove yooooou!" She couldn't understand why I was laughing so hard. It's hard enough to sing sober! She passed away 15 years ago, too young. But every time I hear this, I smile and think of her. RIP Tracy.

Killer album.
It actually borrowed a lot of techniques from movie scores of the time. Several movies of the late 60s sort of had that sound. And then I'd almost say that John Williams ripped off the celeste/flute part from this and used it in a couple of scenes in Star Wars.
Imagine coordinating all those local orchestras with their band on those tours they used to have.
I saw them several times withy the Houston Symphony at Cynthia Woods Pavillian. But the performance that knocked me out Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds...OMG Justin singing forever autum
The most beautiful song in the world - it kind of makes the rest of the album look bad. Tuesday Afternoon also became a pretty big hit. Other great songs from them are The Voice, Question, Wildest Dreams and I'm Just a Singer.

This album was a shocker and ground breaking in 1967. First album I listened to with headphones. I saw the Moody Blues several times in concert, the latest in 2012. They sounded as good as ever.

I once heard that although this song was released it was about five years before it became a big hit. And that it was a popular DJ on the west coast that played it every night around midnight that helped promote it to the charts.
You are on the right track. 'Nights' and 'Tuesday Afternoon' were among the few songs that charted multiple times...they fell off then gained popularity again.
In terms of the USA, you are correct. "Nights" did hit it fairly big in Europe though, especially France, in 1967.

You so got all their intent in their music. This is a classic song and album for the ages.
I'm glad you caught that the lyrics for Twilight Time were horribly wrong! The imagery created by the lyrics always make me think of evenings at the cottage - they captured it perfectly!! (A nightingale plays a dark mellow phrase, of notes that are rich and so true. An aerial display by the firefly brigade, dancing to tunes no one knew. Bats take to wing, like puppets on string, prancing through cool evening air - just pure magic!!)
I love the variety of musical styles presented on this album - they captured it all.
Nights has to be (for me) one of the ultimate love songs ever written! (enough so that it became THE song for my wife and I at our wedding). You are absolutely spot on with the feelings of longing evoked with the music. Oh, please note, the sounds of 'violin' at the early parts of the song are done by mellotron - actually most of the song's 'orchestra' is done by the incomparable Mike Pinder. The true 'orchestra' only chimes in at the end section.
Late Lament is the poem at the end (as you mentioned), and again, you juxtapose it to the beginning poem, and you have the perfect beginning and end to the day.
Now you can see why this is one of my best 'feel good' albums ever. I could be in the worst mood, and I put this on the turntable and bam, all negativity is gone (bonus if my wife is listening with me - we always take a moment to dance, even if just for a minute, when Nights comes on).

Full concert with a concert orchestra backing them..outstanding. I have seen them twice live ,once at Red Rocks, and the other at Polaris, Columbus Ohio . My husband and I fell in love with and during this album and Nights in White Satin was our song.

The journey never ends. So much music, so little time. Not only that, but the excellent pieces require many listens, in many different settings. Alone with headphones, at barbeques, morning music, night music, getting ready for school music. Isn't it wonderful?
You enjoy orchestral music... I know there is a MASSIVE selection of 'classical' music that you would enjoy. Yes, it is possible to enjoy both heavy metal and the vast emotional range that classical music can conjure up. (I am using classical in the broad sense, for you nitpickers out there.) While it does not fit in with this format, please dip into the composers you have heard of - while doing homework, etc. Heck, you could start with Emerson Lake and Palmers 'Pictures at an Exhibition' and then compare to the orchestral suite itself. ( I just heard electronic pioneer Tomita do his version of 'Pictures' - sooo good!}
I will not bore you with a suggested list, but your active imagination, intelligence, and natural curiosity will be rewarded many times over. Classical is much much more than Vivaldi at tea time!

Sixteen, good Lord, I thought you were a college kid. The older you get you will look back to certain situations and wish you had done better. Then at some point, you realize that the three people involved in the memory have been dead for years. Then you know it is time to move on. And you are so right about only knowing your own head. A close friend once said, "Not matter how well you think you know someone, you can never get inside their head."

i was about your age when i first heard this album ( it had just been released) instant fan. i humbly suggest: listen to the next moody blues records in order, and from top to bottom. so, so amazing.
Oh, Daniel, you are such a thoughtful ‘ol soul; I danced to this when it was released while in high school. You appear to really appreciate sounds from your grandparents’ decade( of which I would probably be a part), and you seem to have a sensitivity that most young people your age lack and that’s okay; it is perfectly permissible to find joy in both the present and the past.
The lead singer, Justin Hayward, was only 19 when he wrote and sang Nights in White Satin! He’s 75 now and is still doing solo tours. His voice is still as rich, passionate, and mesmerizing as ever. I was blessed to see him this year.

Such a great album by one of the best of their time, or any time. I was 19 years old when this came out, and now I'm 72. The album is still on the shelf with the rest of my record collection... Ray Thomas that read the poem about night at the end passed away awhile back. He also played the flute on the records. At one of the last visits with Ray they told him they were retiring his songs from their performances. Ray said it was alright to go ahead and do his songs. They told him it was impossible to do them without him. This was because he taught him self how to play the flute. They had been auditioning classical and jazz flute players and none of them could figure out what he was doing or how he was doing it. It was really impossible to do those songs. Ray had a good laugh at that. I got to see them twice. Both time they had to take a short break mid concert to fix the Mellotron. A really unique band.

Daniel, I know there is no such thing as "Perfect" song or album but if there is something that is near perfect in music, this album is definitely near perfect and Nights in White Satin is a near perfect proverbial "cherry on top" and that is why this album is LEGENDARY! The odd thing about this song is . Most artists have a song or two that reach "Cult" status years , sometimes decades after their inception. The opposite was true with this song. It gained nearly instant Cult classic status just a short time after it's release. It became very cool for even the hard rockin bands of the day , to try to cover this song in their sets, because it was the instant way to prove you had style , class and taste . For very good reason too. The song , and the band indeed had "style , Class , and taste" . True classic. One of the tunes that can easily help you drift into another other-worldly place while listening. Also try "The Hollies" especially " The air that I breathe" OR the " Amboy Dukes-- Journey To The Center Of The Mind" They too are very similar moody , ethereal sounding tunes that tell great stories. Great Job ...I'm starting to think of you as the "Mr Rodgers" of reaction comments, because your breakdowns are poetic , and almost psychological interpretations .. good job kiddo , keep it up .
Justin hayward of the Moody Blues collaborated with Jeff Wayne on the massive cult album War of the Worlds and had the only hit from the album. Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds was created by composer Jeff Wayne based on the 1898 novel by H. G. Wells. It features Academy Award nominated actor Richard Burton, Justin Hayward (of The Moody Blues), Chris Thompson (of Manfred Mann's Earth Band), Phil Lynott (of Thin Lizzy), Julie Covington (of Evita and Rock Follies), and David Essex (Evita, The China Plates). Wayne conducts what would come to be known as the Black Smoke Band and the ULLAdubULLA string orchestra.
"Forever Autumn" was a UK Top 5 single, sung by Justin Hayward. The album itself spent 290 weeks in the UK album charts. It was in the top 10 in 22 countries and reached No. 1 in 11 countries.
This is a fantastic album and needs to be listened to as a whole so not necessarily good for a reaction but I recommend it for your own listening.
War of the Worlds was written by H G Wells an published in 1897. Famously in 1938 a radio dramatization caused panic because people thought it was a news report.

I grew up listening to Moody Blues in my childhood and now in my twilight still loving it, thank you for your review, subscribed.... The last performance at the Royal Albert Hall
was the last performance by the entire group before the deaths of Drummer Graeme Charles Edge (11 November 2021), and Flutist and songwriter Ray Thomas (4 January 2018) Lead Singer and writer and guitarist Justin Hayward declared the band "over" after the death of the drummer.
Justin Hayward continues to this day to bring new and past material to Audience with competent musicians.
The Moody Blues legend Justin Hayward was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his longstanding contribution to the arts by King Charles III at the July 11, 2023 Investitures ceremony at Windsor Castle.
Ie: I've had a friend that lived in Swindon, where Justin grew up in, he has refused to admit to a relationship there, well someone in particular but he wrote Nights In White Satin after receiving Satin Sheets by a lover at 19 years old and by the late 80s when he tried to return and wrote the song, "In Your Wildest Dreams, 1986", (production told him your too old but he insisted to star himself in the video)... admits you can never return home,.. Things change, people do too, and so time stands in defiance of... us ❤️ this was quite a change and a testimony to time vs.. US. 1:43

I grew up with this and he is a genius. Taking lyrics to very deep level of poetic heights. It is an awesome album....written with total grattitude...lifes heart in a musical arrangement like many could never perform in such a majestic historical... Orchestrated musical perfection. Beautiful

Thanks for playing this album, I really needed to find an excuse to buy more vinyl, and you have just given me that excuse.
I have loved this album and the Moodys since the beginning. I'm 63 now and still love them. One of the absolute highlights of my life was seeing them live (twice) with a full orchestra. It was surreal. Makes me tear up just thinking about and reliving it now. When Graeme Edge (the drummer) stepped out on the stage and started "Breathe deep, the gathering gloom..." I just fell apart. There's videos of that tour out there. Highly recommended. Concert volume.
