The point George was making around the 14:00 mark is that "free will" and "divine plan" are contradictory things in most respects. The first one suggests we have self-determination, while the second says our fates are predetermined. Both of these things can't be true at the same time.

  • @timlynch5710

Also Daniel, you're correct, he was raised Catholic (as was I) and that's a whole other can of worms, or rather let's say a whole other bottle of holy water. George used to start this one routine with: "I used to be Irish Catholic, now I'm just an American." Just loved that line probably because I also used to be Irish Catholic, now I'm just a Canadian. He'd say when he was a kid and going to mass and the confessional etc, and he would ask the priest anything about an article of faith, or a dogma, a rite or catechism; without ever giving an answer he'd just say: "Well it's a mystery..." That would split our ribs. Anyhow, good of you to have listened to this bit. It's somewhat dated, and not all that accurate, but man he was good. He was really great. Love to you all.

I think the Church is absolutely counter-intuitive to what I, (as an atheist with a theology degree), know about the teachings attributed to Jesus. According to the Gospels, the teachings attributed to Jesus are exactly opposite to most churches in America today. If one were to look at the "Red Letters", frankly, the American churches would be cast in a dark light against the One to Whom they claim allegiance. What is great about this routine is that Carlin is basically going against the Church, not necessarily G-d.

They were not supposed to be asking for requests, favors or miracles. But when people are faced with seriously bad things, many look to the one who has the power to change it and hope that their requests are granted.

Been watching Carlin since he was doing standup on TV shows in the early 70's. One look of his major influences was the legendary Lenny Bruce who was a trailblazer in comedy.
Carlin's major theme was to think for yourself & to question the status quo. His standup was to point out the injustices of society & the inconsistencies of human behavior. I am quite sure a great deal of artistic license was taken to construct his routines (like praying to Joe Pesci).
His life story is quite interesting & he was a very private man who kept his family out of the spotlight of his fame. There are some terrific interviews he did that will let you see a bit more of the sensitive man he really was.
Daniel, you really need to check.out his "Modern Man" routine. It is NOT a controversial bit, but shows what an incredible genius & wordsmith he was. I think that may have been an award winning routine for him. I could be wrong, but it is mind blowing nonetheless!

I think youre forgetting there are many sects of Christianity, and not all believe youre condemned by being born in middle of a muslin nation, bla bla. And i HIGHLY doubt Daniel would believe good, honest, kind people would be damned for just being born in the wrong place.. but all that aside, i just dont understand how people find it ok to tear in on someone who hasnt said or done a single toxic religious thing.. except just disclosing his very personal belief system.. which.. hes right to do so bc it shows hes very self aware exactly why everyone spammed him to react to this. Hes not naive. If he can enjoy the comedy aspect and not feel offended, why are you? Not to mention, George’s main gripes has always been with the corruption churches have.. no taxes, hypocrisy of the people running them, and even the bible.. which im pretty sure most can agree just bc someones Christian, doesnt mean they consider the bible as GodCrafted. I know many Christians who can admit its likely a book geared to help indoctrinate a moral system they find worthy in their families. I think that when George was talking about the divine plan that maybe it’s not actual doctrine or dogma, but it is a very common statement from evangelists, assuring their flock that “God has a plan for you!” It seemed like an easy way to make the “interrupting God’s plan with your prayer for something not in the plan” work. When speaking of Joe Pesci, he was likely referring to his roles in films like Goodfellas and Casino where he played gangsters. Carlin was able to attract and maintain a fan base that included many people that didn’t agree with his views, but respected the incredible artistry in which he framed his opinions. He had an elegance and tastefulness to him, even when using crude or vulgar elements to make or emphasize a point. It’s a great bit that invites contemplation on the difference between religion, a man-made construct, and spirituality, which is our ability to connect one-on-one with whatever we believe is our higher power. Some enjoy the rules and structure of using the “middle man” of religion to have spiritual experiences, and some prefer to go straight to the source using words like “meditation” instead of “prayer.” As long as it fulfills you and isn’t used to subjugate or diminish others, religious and spiritual beliefs are a good thing, and we don’t have to agree or share the same beliefs, or even have beliefs. Personally, in my adult life, I haven’t found it necessary to define my beliefs or pledge my allegiance to a religion, political party, or philosophy.

Religion is not bullsh*t. But neither is this routine. An interesting, almost unsolvable paradox.

10:18 to 12:07 is a very good way of looking at it and approaching belief in a proper way. I'm not religious but i have an aunt who is a minister for a Protestant church and she says spirituality thinking comes in all forms and being rational and clear headed is one of if not the strongest of those forms, so respect to this guy for saying what he said.

Great attempt. I applaud you. As a former christian I understand the holes of their logic. Good for you for at least acknowledging them.
