  • This is my second conversation with Tim Bowness. It took place on 4/25/23 from his home near Bath.
In addition to releasing seven studio albums and a documentary DVD with no-man, Tim has worked with popular Italian artist Alice (on her Italian Top 20 album Viaggio In Italia), Mercury Prize nominated Banco De Gaia, Robert Fripp, Peter Hammill, Phil Manzanera and many others.
Tim recorded the album Flame (1994) with Richard Barbieri, co-produced/co-wrote the acclaimed Talking With Strangers (2009) for Judy Dyble (ex-Fairport Convention), and has had a long-term collaborative partnership with Peter Chilvers (Brian Eno).
Tim's six solo releases on InsideOutMusic/Sony have entered the official UK Top 5 Rock, Progressive, and Vinyl charts, as well as the official Scottish charts. Along with Steven Wilson, he is also the co-host of The Album Years, which has reached the Top 5 Music Podcast charts in over 25 countries.
Since 2001, Tim has co-run the specialist online label/store Burning Shed with Pete Morgan.

I also wanted to say that the art direction for No Man was really wonderful too...some gorgeous covers and design work throughout the catalog.

I love listening to an incredibly intelligent artist like Tim (another reason I so love the podcast as well).

All this time, I have loved Burning Shed and not known Tim was a major player! Even more reason to support it!

I found No Man through PT, but actually NM became my favorite...especially as a whole catalog.

It is an interesting effect of these streaming years, the dissolution of the "album effect." I think, even for me, a lot of albums don't "separate" for me. For example, the last 4 of Tim's releases all sort of blend together...I couldn't tell you which song was on which album. But, 40 years ago, for example, I could probably tell you which album any given Yes song came from. It's both good and bad, I guess. And of course, as a visual artist, I really wish I had been doing covers for artists back in, say, the 70s.

Oh, for some unknown reason, I am wondering if you have an installment of this column featuring Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance?

Tim, is there a Funko Bowness behind you?

A lovely thought. The collection belongs to Bowness Jr and mainly contains 1950s music stars, 1930s horror movie characters and James Bond figures.

ohhh, Paddy....damn, anything by him is gold....do either of you know how he is doing? Last I heard, he was ailing from something serious? And the author who was doing a PS book I did some illustrations for disappeared, so, double loss!
